A small bottle with big flavor! Brewed with six different malts and generously hopped, robust doesn't really begin to describe this beer. Smooth chocolate flavors with hints of Coffee, Caramel and Vanilla. Hop presence is copious and is matched by rich malt flavors.

Big Sky's Limited Release of Bobo's Robust Porter pours a slightly think, almost syrupy, super dark and opaque brown, with deep ruby highlights near the edges, this beer could almost pass for black. A solid inch of cocoa colored foam, appears almost milkshake-like in its frothiness, which eventually dissipates to leave a good lacing. Sweet and roasty malt aromas burst out of the glass and dance around hints of milk chocolate and coffee. unexpected, yet welcomed, smokiness joins roasted and some slightly sweet malt tones, with lighter then expected coffee flavors rounding out this brew. This medium bodied ale has a lower level amount of carbonation, both of which work exceptionally well in this limited release. A very good porter, and a GREAT beer to enjoy before the weather begins to get too warm...

Pours extra thick and oily with a tan head.

Aroma has burnt coffee, chocolate, and smoke.

Flavors are similar with the burnt coffee bean showing more and blending nicely with smoke. It has a rather bitter mouthfeel that could definately be smoothed out for even more enjoyment.

Overall, this would be a good breakfast beer, but nothing outstanding. There are better examples of the style.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown black with a large creamy brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet chocolate malts, some acidic coffee and some smoke. It all washes out quickly other than acidic leather.

The flavor is roasted malts with very acidic coffee and a burnt bitterness at the end. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and la little watery.

Overall, I remember liking previous bottle much more than this. This one seems to have a lot of off notes and is very acidic.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a small tan head. The aroma has a ton of roasted malt and chocolate notes, with a hint of mint thrown in. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of chocolate malt, but what really stands out is the heavily roasted/burnt malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: This beer poured a nice dark brown, almost black and a nice thick dark tan head, for some reason didn't stick around.

S: Rich and thick molasses.

T: Tastes really heavy and bold, and not in a good way.

M: Too watery for how heavy and bold it tastes.

D: I'd rate this lower, if I knew they were going to produce it on a regular basis instead of a limited release.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Pint glass.

Appearance: Completely opaque black color with cappuccino head that mostly subsides.

Smell: Coffee, chocolate and roasted malts. Smells as if coffee was added, although I am almost certain it wasn't.

Taste: Chocolate, coffee and licorice. Overall, nice malt taste but needs more bitterness, whether from hops or roasting.

Feel: Low carbonation and pretty smooth, but too thin.

Drinkability: Despite the thin body and relative lack of bitterness, it is a smooth, easy drinking porter.

Deep dark brown, thin film of a head, light espresso, chocolate, caramel, creamy smooth, good for people who do not like a lot of roast bitterness, very drinkable, almost sessionable, chocolate and dark but not roasted malts.

Pours a clear very very dark brown to black with a really big light brown head, that slowly dies away, leaving a decent lacing as you drink this porter.

The aroma coming off this is a very light roasted with hints of coffee malts.

A decent tasting porter that has a roasted malt with hints of coffee and a slight dark chocolate note. The taste follows through to the aftertaste with its roasted light coffeeness with a nice added dryness.

A pretty good porter for the price, not equal in taste to Murphy's or some of Rogue's stuff but this costs about half the price and is well worth that.

A good looking start to Bobo's as it is a deep mahogany brown approaching black. The beer just looks rich and decadent. The head is milk chocolate colored and has a decent amount of lasting ability and lacing.

The nose is a slight step back in robustness contrary to the appearance. There are notes of roasted grains, coffee and dark chocolate but muted in a fizzy kind of way.

Taste follows the same pattern but edges out the nose barely... which is a good thing. The chocolaty, roasted grains are the dominating flavors as the coffee fades into the finish. A tasty brew but not something I'd put in the "robust" category.

Mouthfeel is on the dry side of things with a firm carbonation bite and a bitterness that's reminiscent of burnt coffee stirred with a cheap chocolate bar. A good beer but an average porter. Worth checking out but this is nothing to write home about.

This beer is nearly black and it's looking pretty thick, too. The head that rises on top is a strong, rocky medium brown one with some staying power and heft. The lacing it leaves clinging to the glass is patchy and plenteous.
This beer is consistent from aroma to flavor and is pretty much a standard-setter for the so-called "robust porter," almost a style in its own right now. Where it keeps from crossing from porter to stout may be a mystery, but it's got the necessities: a big, strong, roasty malt backbone, a dry sort of edge with just a little sweetness cutting the char and roast from being acrid, heavier notes of barley-like grains, and the dark chocolate & coffee (in this case grounds) combo that comes with it all.
The body has the appropriate robustness, not disappointing, in a big, full body with an ashy dryness most of the way though. Crispness is light but sustained with nice smoothness.

Appearance - Pours a near midnight black with brown edging. Head is minimal, 1/2 finger, and retention is poor. Resulting lace is average, but semi-sticky.

Smell - Faint notes of roasted malt, toffee and a touch of hop.

Taste - Follows the nose. Roasted malt, with coffee, caramel and toffee notes. Hops come through as mild citrus.

Mouthfeel - Light for a porter, if not a tad watery. Carbonation is decent, leaving a crisp bite on the lips and tongue. Finishes semi-dry.

Overall - Didn't impress me at first, but grew on me as it warmed. One of the better Big Sky brewery beers for sure.

On-tap at Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood - 5/6/2010. Served in a nonic.

Opaque seal brown liquid with a small tan head. Good cakey lacing, thin tears. Average retention.

Roast coffee, chocolate, dark malt - perfectly wedded.

The flavors follow the nose closely, though the depth of malt suggests multiple varieties though not roast levels. A hint of bitterness towards the finish, but more like bittersweet chocolate than hops. Maybe the slightest twinge of diacetyl.

Velvety, rich, medium-bodied feel with moderate carbonation.

Great with food, enjoyable alone, the best thing I've tried so far from this brewery.

Sit Bobo....sit...Good dog...for those who are in and round 40yrs will know what reference I just put down. Bobo poured an opaque black with ecru head that is thick and leaving some lace. The scent has roast and hints of chocolate. The taste has some coffee, caramel and peat. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its an ok porter....definitely sessionable.

A: Dark, dark brown hue with a huge light brown head; lacing is good

S: Roasty chocolate malts with subtle pepper, anise, vanilla, coffee, and dark fruit undertones; this smells great

T: So much dark fruit, coffee, chocolate, and roasty and grainy flavors--this is a really nice robust porter

F: Big body for a porter and extremely creamy

O: This is a fine beer; one of my favorites from this brewery--truly what a robust porter should be

Had one the other night, but this actually tastes better on a fresh set of taste buds IMO...

Pours an effervescent ebony with a finger+ of brown/chestnut colored head. Zero head retention & lacing

S: Chocolate, coffee & iron

T: Coffee, dark chocolate, & iron up front. Charred grain, & dryness as this warms, plus some coffee. Finishes dry with more charred grain & coffee

MF: Creamy, smooth, & medium bodied

Drinks fairly easy, good, not great slant on the coffee styled porter....
