Brush Tail Farmhouse Saison is the newest limited release from Big Sky Brewing out of Missoula, Montana. This hazy brew pours a pale gold. An inch of white head provides spotty lace but is fairly well retained. Aromas of wheat, grain, some pepper and Belgian yeast fill the nose. On the palate, sweet malt and wheat flavors dominate with light peppery and yeasty flavors playing a minor role. Lighter in body, this Farmhouse Saison provides a good level of carbonation. While it falls away from the historical aspects of the style, Brush Tail offers a refreshing new take on a Farmhouse Saision.

Appearance: Slightly hazy, medium golden color, with a robust, coarse white head. The carbonation is moderate, and slow-rising. Scattered, patchy lacing adorns the glass walls.

Aroma: Phenolic notes dominate the aroma, bread malt is also present. Fruit notes are quite restrained; there is a tart quality, and some pepper as well.

Taste: Opens with moderate phenolic notes, which intensify as the taste progresses. Sturdy, tart wheat malt flavors and an earthy bitterness dominate the flavor. There is a little pepper and an almost spectral fruitiness, far less than expected for the style. As the taste progresses, the bitterness intensifies, culminating in a lingering, strong medicinal taste.

Mouth feel: Rich, smooth, and very full.

Drinkability/notes: A rather one-dimensional example of the style, with most of the characteristics that make the style complex and interesting unfortunately understated.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium chalice.

Sourcing: Purchased at HEB in Austin, Texas in April, 2013.

12oz bottle purchased from Berkeley Bowl West in Berkeley, CA.

Pours a hazed yellow-gold colour, with a frothy head of white that stays around quite persistently with large-bubbled foam. Lacing is patchy, but decent where it forms. Body is light, with the haze giving it a suggestion that it's thicker than it is. Overall, it looks pretty decent.

Nose is earthy and rustic, ostensibly, but picks up a big vulcanised rubber character which gives it a pungent overtone that's not altogether pleasant. Under this are sub-characters of honey, wheat germ and a little lemon. There are some characteristic earthy, funky and slightly sweaty tones, but they're not altogether there as a whole package.

Taste is similar, or worse. Things start out ok, with a mild, slightly peppery tone above some neutral malt, but this devolves rapidly into a big upswell of bread-yeast and white corn flavours. These overpower the beer, leaving a powdery dryness in the mouth, and providing an unappetising residual character on the palate. After a while, they get muted a little bit (or I just get used to them), meaning some other flavours come through: oddly I get lavender and cork. It's just not very appealing, although the bizarreness has some esoteric appeal.

Feel is light and prickly.

Overall, I can't really endorse this: I find it either unpleasant or weird, and certainly not a good Saison. The characters are off-kilter, the flavour is unpleasant and the aroma is disconcerting at least. At least it's interesting.

Picked up as part of a mixed sixer

Pours an effervescent straw color with 2 fingers of pearl white head. Stellar lacing & good head retention

S: Pears, apple blossoms & a bit of perfumy hops

T: Follows the nose, mushroom/barnyard dirt, dryness & a bit of lemon. More dryness, apple peels & pears as this warms. Finishes fruitty, dry, crisp with slight puckery notes

MF: Medium body with noticable carbonation

Not bad, a touch too clean & refined for the style. I expected more from these guys

Heavy carbonation off of the pour. Eggshell white foam. Light golden in color and it you get plenty of light coming through. I get some of the Saison yeast in the aroma, but it is quickly followed by a bit of corn. Adjuncts in a Saison = not cool. Mouthfeel is light and smooth. I don't get the trademark slickness of the Saison yeast. I actually get almost a faint bit of a flavor that is similar to coriander and it is pretty strong.

$7.20 for a 6'er of this at WinCo of all places... Great deal! Pours into my HotD goblet with a 2 finger white head.. nice retention, but only splotchy lacing... the brew is hazed straw golden.

The aromas are only okay in the traditional saison realm.. grainy/wheat malt presence.. I guess some minor peppery phenols, but no real fruity esters.. seems too malt dominant for a "saison". Could use any sort of Belgian esters.

Very grainy on the palate.. not as dry on the palate as expected for the style.. light yeasty peppery quality.. perhaps some minor clove and even some bandaid. Wheat malt lays down a minor (very minor) tartness, but there is no yeasty sour notes to speak of.

Body is thick for a saison.. the residual malts left on the palate accentuate this... and the carbonation isn't really that good either.

Despite all my above negatives, I see what the good folks at Big Sky were trying to accomplish and I would suggest a very different yeast.

But for what this is, it is very, very refreshing and unlike anything the other breweries have in the cooler right now.... I will certainly buy it again... This should have been released in late spring.. Late night fire-pit parties, afternoon yard-work, and camping/fishing/hot-springing with an interesting/individual brew.

Decent... I see the bones; but this should have been more adventurous and it would have been great (especially in a 6-pack).

12oz bottle. Poured out a cloudy, golden color with a white head. It smelled fruity and spicy. There were some subtle caramel notes. Sweet and tart. Good yeast and spice with a smooth caramel malt kick.

Pours a cloudy, maize color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of floral hops, sweet malt, pale malt, slight citrus, hint of wheat, and a hint of grass. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of slight pale malt, slight citrus, hint of spice, slight yeast, hint of wheat, and hops. Overall, great appearance and decent body, but aroma is slightly off-putting.

pours a hazy golden with a massive white head. Smells like musty , earthy barns. Taste begins with a big pepper flavor. After that is some lemon, then wheat grain, and a tart, dry, citrus rind finish. Mouth feel is pretty good. Overall quite a good Saison.

Appearance: 2" fluffy white head recedes slowly with moderate lacing. Significant carbonation present. Deep golden color and somewhat cloudy, but less than is common with saisons.
Aroma: clove, banana, warm bread dough, earthy hops.
Mouthfeel: mostly light, fairly crisp, somewhat dry finish.
Flavor: Hops are more forward than expected and mask the sweeter malt flavors (clove, banana, caramel) somewhat.
Overall: very fine, but not great.

Pours a straw yellow color with a decent sized white head that stays around for a time.

Smells like hay, freshly mowed grass, and a hint of citrus.

Citrus starts out strong at first, then gets a bit grassy and finishes with a strong hops note. Leave a bit of lingering bitterness.

Feel is ok, can really feel the carbonation on the tongue.

Not a bad beer, but seems to not be very coherent. It could use a bit more balance and complexity to it, while refreshing, has a bit of an odd flavor note that keeps it from being one of the better examples of the style. I mainly bought this because i like the packaging and the label, but not one I'll be likely to have much more of in the future.

The beer pours a dark yellow color with a big, billowing cap of foam. The aroma presents some decent grain aroma with a background of citrus. However, together with this, is a lingering off component, tending toward something like sourish vegetation---something that should be earthy has went awry. It's light on the palate as it should be, but the flavor profile follows the nose with some curious sourish notes. The sweetness of the grain brings some positive components, but it isn't enough to rescue the flaws. Something went off the rails while brewing this, which is a surprise, since the breweries year-round offerings are very good.

Dark gold with a dense white head that leaves behind a few rings of lace. The body is just slightly hazy thanks to the bottle conditioning. All the standard saison notes make an appearance but not one particularly jumps out - spicy pepper and clove, lemon, faint banana, grassy bitterness, along with a slightly off-putting herbal astringency. Malt gives support with some honey sweetness and crackery base.

A sub 6% saison in six packs is appealing to me (see Prairie Standard). Brush Tail is a solid attempt, but the lingering harsh herbal note and it's "generic" saison profile is holding this one back.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Hazy honey with thick, bubbly white head.

Smell: Earthy aroma, with dried out banana, clove, citrus and white pepper.

Taste: Very similar to the aroma, with the same mix of flavors. Pretty tasty, but the finish is sharp in an odd way.

Feel: Light body, moderately high carbonation, dry finish.

Overall: Much better than the average in my opinion. It seems that the lower abv Saisons usually get lower scores.

Mostly clear medium-gold body, nice frothy head leaving noteworthy lacing.

Lovely aroma. The yeast yields banana, pear, and pepper layered upon doughy bread.

Taste falls short. A little biscuity sweetness, followed by something kind of dirty and bitter. The little sour and funk tastes muted and almost bitter themselves. Brushtail is lacking the finer flavors of a traditional saison.

Not as dry and crisp as one would expect from a light bodied farmhouse ale.

What seemed promising at first in appearance and smell ended up falling short in taste and mouthfeel. As more brewers are churning out more saisons, I don't feel the motivation to seek this one out again.

Pours a hazy straw color with a pillowy white head that leaves big chunks of lacing.

Smells of citrus peel and grainy sweetness with a little spice.

Tastes of the grains first with a bit of citrus and spice over top. Leads off with grainy sweetness and a bit of bread to it. Citrus hops come through as well as some earthy spiciness. A touch of clove and pepper comes in the end with a dry finish.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is decent, but I probably won't pick up any more.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Bottle code is 060131 061914, or something fairly close.

Pours clear yellow until the last bit of the bottle is poured in, when it becomes pretty hazy. Head is huge, almost disastrous, to the point where I couldn't pour the whole 12oz bottle into the pint glass. Head fades into huge peaks and valleys. Smell is apples and spicy, with lemons.

Taste is a bit of a letdown after the smell. Strange bitterness, dirty dishwater, a little bit of the apple and almost no tartness or sour.

Mouthfeel is thin and slick. Overall, it’s a decent beer.
