Coffee Stout: A blend of coffee, crème brûlée. Coffee Brown in coloring.
Skipper’s Stout is our new winter seasonal brewed with three different varietals of coffee and crème brûlée. Our special coffee blend brings bold flavor, while the addition of chocolate malts and crème brûlée round this brew out, with a smooth and slightly sweet finish.
Our brewdog, Skipper is a craft beer fanatic. When he isn’t guarding our precious malts or greeting customers, he is surfing coast to coast spreading the word about Erie brews. Skipper’s Stout is a delicious coffee stout with creamy chocolate notes and a healthy dose of caffeinated beer awesomeness to get you going from AM to PM!

Two brown twelve ounce bottles barely fit inside a clear glass liter mug. Since the biege head is very modest, they do. The aroma is a solid black coffee one, alongside a nice roasted malt one. Beneath the enduring modest head is a deep dark brown liquid. It might be just one perceptionable level less black than black coffee brown. Regardless, it's very dark, very bright and very opaque. Not only is the aroma attractive, at least to a coffee and a stout lover, it's down right pungent. The coffee really does make its presence in the taste. This drinks with more of a taste of black coffee than of the roasted malt of a stout. Unfortunately, for stout lovers, the body is also far to close to one of black coffee. So overall, this is coffee taste heavy, light to the palate, without any glass lacing and virtually headless. It also delivers, as promised, a robust black coffee flavor that gives little clue that the ABV exceeds seven percent. This is one of the most coffeecentric stouts you may encounter. There's nothing subtle about its inclusion, so keep that in mind. If a good dose of caffeine may interrupt your sleeping pattern, you may want to carefully choose when you try this one, or especially two.

Pours a dark brown with one finger head. Smell is….coffee and maybe some citrus. Taste follows, a bit creamy and sweet…not overly bitter. A nice easy beer.

1/1/22 On tap at Industry Public House
Bright, cinnamon, and coffee on the nose. A very stoney and light brew coffee flavor. Bitter on the sides of the tongue. This one was just ok, but hit all the brewer's notes well.
Edit: From a 12 oz bottle on 3/18/23. This is a much better brew this time. Deeper and richer than the last time. It's bright, yet coats the mouth. No cinnamon on the nose this time, more sweet caramel coffee. Bright coffee, not at light as we mentioned before
We increased our ratings on this one by at least 15%.

Foamy head, didn't linger, no lacing in pint glass. Not much carbonation.Aroma initially sweet, then some coffee and chocolate come to the forefront. Taste was pleasant, good balance of sweet/bitter. Pretty much like flavored coffee. Bit of an oily tinge to the feel. I didn't notice any metallic aftertaste others mentioned.

Skipper Stout poured from the bottle and into a nonic pint.
A: Deep black roasted hue. Minimal carbo, minimal lacing and tiny bubbles cling to glass upon stir. A hint of legs. Thin 1mm collar lingers with minimal other head.
S: Sickly sweet chocolate malted milk balls. Yeast not detectable over it.
T: Not as sickly sweet as nose would indicate, and there's some bitterness lingering like a good baker's chocolate or porter would have.
M: I will go backwards from finish to initial mouthfeel for a good reason. The finish is lightly slick and oily with a hint of a puffing outbreath of chocolate bitterness, not hop bitters. Mid quaff is slick. Initial quaff is slick yet slightly viscous. Carbonation is lacking, causing a dense slick mouthfeel.
O: A nice sweet (not quite pastry) stout style. Less aggressive than ST Creme Brulee.
Edit: 5 minutes after, I am getting that slightly metallic aftertaste others seem to have mentioned but the mouthfeel's slick is lingering. Odd.

Color is deep dark brown, barely letting light through. This bottle in particular didn't have much of a head when poured, just a few bubbles and a thin ring caressing the sides of my glass. Smell was roasted coffee with hints of chocolate. First sip I was hit with what tasted immediately like coconut, then drifted into chocolate, finishing with coffee bitterness which wasn't unpleasant. Medium-bodied and little carbonation. This was a random pull from a distributor and I went in completely blind. Surprised to read that there was supposed to be creme brulee notes which I didn't particularly pick up on. I would have it again.

I’m usually keen on coffee stout, but this one was somewhat dull. I mean, it’s drinkable, but with a noticeable metalic note, I’m thinking off-flavor. I am left wondering, what bean did they use, Maxwell House?

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish Head tuilp
L: Dark mahogany brown pour.. nearly black with minimal tannish head. Minimal lacing.
S: Strong roast grains and coffee.
T/F: Sweet roasted sugars up front. Strong coffee presence. Light chocolate but mostly espresso. Could use a bit more bitterness to balance the sweet... medium bodied. Minimal carbonation.
O: A mediocre coffee stout. Hits a lot of the flavors, but a bit on the sweet side ... could use more balance and carbonation.

Poured into a narrow pint glass: color is black, solid, head is tan with fine bubbles and presents about 1/4 inch thick and then dissipates to a thin top with a ring on the glass and spotty lacing.
Smell is coffee and roasted malt with some light cream and chocolate.
Taste is roasty, coffee, espresso, chocolate and and light lactose like flavor; lingering sweetness and bitterness.
Mouthfeel is a bit sharp, but then is softens with some sweetness that lingers.
Overall a good beer, a bit sweet but good balance of roast, coffee, and creme brulee sweetness.

Erie Brewing Skipper Stout 7.2% ABV.
Look: Pitch Black
Smell: Coffee, dark chocolate, roasty dark malts
Taste: Coffee, dark malts, smooth then slight roasty bitterness on the end.
Feel: medium body
Overall: The Skipper is a good solid stout and drinks like a more robust imperial stout without an kind of boozeyness, or warming boozeyness. I don't get any of the creme brulee, or a massive sweetness like others have mentioned. It doesn't taste sweet to me at all. I am getting this pretty late in the season because it is a winter beer and it is April, so maybe some of those flavors dissapated over time? I dunno, but it just taste like a good solid stout to me. Yah Erie! Go P.A. craft brews!
