12oz. bottle. No freshness date. Come on Erie... catch up with the times.

Pours a unique looking peach color with good clarity (just a touch hazy). Fizzed like soda immediately following the pour. Head rose to about a half inch, then quickly settled to absolutely nothing. No head retention or lacing to speak of. It honestly looks like carbonated juice

Very mild aroma of grains and fruit juice.

Pretty one dimensional taste. It's malty and sweet throughout. There's an underlying tartness, but the sweetness doesn't allow it to shine (too bad, this is just too sweet).

The mouthfeel is thin up front, but heads more towards medium in the middle with that cream ale feel. Low carbonation.

Not too excited about this one overall. I knew that there was I reason that I had yet to try this one.

Morey's Bottom Line: Let me just say that the name "Derailed" should have been saved for a DIPA, Barleywine, or a RIS. Maybe even an Imperial version of Railbender?!

Look: Very small bleach white head, orange (about a 13 SRM), good lacing, slow light carb.

Smell: Light roasty, grassy, fruity (cherry of course), earthy, fresh fig. Very clean nose.

Taste: Cherry, light malt, slight candiness. Body is light.

Final Thoughts: I hate to say it like this, but it's almost like a four loko without the big alcohol. It just seems like candy cherry with malt. Not one of Erie's best I've had so far.

Thanks to Tedwarhc for this bottle. Served in a tulip.

Pours a bright light pinkish-orange color with a large fizzy, soda-like head that falls quickly into a very thin collar. Nose brings forward some fake cherry character and not much else. The flavor is strange with some artificial cherry and almost tastes like a cherry Tootsie Roll without the chocolate. Light body and plenty of carbonation. Interesting, but not something I'd drink very much of.

I remember liking this better at the Beer on the Bay Beer fest in Erie PA last year (July 2010). It poured a Nice ruby and copper colored body with a super thick, frothy white head and bubbles floating from the bottom are visible. Aroma of cherries, malt, fruit, and maybe Wheat? Tastes just like it smells. Almost like a wine cooler, but I guess better. They go down quick, watch out for the 5%. I guess a good Summer beer. But a little too sweet.

Ah, one of those beers that, because you can grab a single, you decide to give it a go, despite some reservation about beers that note they are "malt beverage with fruit flavor added." Then it languishes in the beer fridge, repeatedly pushed aside until dwindling stock impels you to take the plunge.

This is the part where I would like to turn the corner and write that it turned out to be great beer. Alas, 'tis not to be. Poured a rather odd pale, reddish-pink tinge. Some sweet cherry notes in the aroma. Very little actual beer flavor. Primary flavor was a somewhat sweet cherry note, and with the high level of carbonation, this could easily have passed for watered down carbonated cherry Kool-aid.

Derailed ale. Puns are too easy here.

A- Beautiful amber with a pinkish hazy tint, thick creamy head, great retention and creamy walls of lace.

S- Very faint, biscuit malts, earthy notes of hops, and tart black cherry in the background.

T- Biscuit, watery, hints of caramel, an earthy floral hops, a finish of tart cherry with a bit of a sweet dherry in the back. Earthy woody notes. Overall watery.

M- Thin and watery with filmy aftertaste

D- Very faint on flavors, but subtle cherry makes it enjoyable. Thin and watery, goes down easy. I just don't think it hit the mark of what I expected.

Appearance: Pours out in a nice carbonated swirl. It's very light, pretty much pink. I would like this better, but it ends up kind of flat.

Smell: High points here. Nothing too complex, just a whole lot of cherries. Sweet and sour at the same time. What can I say? I'm a sucker for fruity beer smells.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Not my favorite taste or mouthfeel. Some sweet and sour cherries and that's it. It's a bit too sweet, yet still dry at the same time. It's almost like one of the those kiddy cocktails or Shirley Temples (or whatever you called it). Mouthfeel is extremely flat and watery.

Drinkability: The odd flavor and mouthfeel combination throws this out of balance.

Overall: A miss overall.

Pours a clean orange-ish color with a small white head. In the aroma, an English malt and semi dry black cherry note. In the taste, black cherry, not too sweet, more tart, and thin maltiness. A smooth and light bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry hint of tart black cherry in the aftertaste. OK, but kind of thin with a decent cherry flavor.

Erie Brewing Co either impresses me or lets me down. There are a few of their beers that I really like, and I few others I don't really care for, but I always give them a shot when I see a brew of theirs that I haven't had yet. That being said, it's time to move on and review Erie Brewing Co's Derailed Black Cherry Ale.

The brew pours a hazy amber brown from what I can tell; let's just say I don't have the pleasure of natural light right now. There also seems to be a faded grayish-red hue toward the corners of the glass (2-D perspective). A silky, multi-layered rim collects itself after a few minutes.

The smell is delicious, albeit it is probably derived from some sort of cherry extract. Canned cherries; that's all I can gather from the smell.

The taste is a little bit of husk up front, with a sweet cherry finish. Muted malts and a pseudo oxidation taste at first, but the cherry sweetness soon washes that away. Still, I'm left with a syrupy tongue more akin to a few maibocks I've run into in the past than a cream ale.

Not a bad brew, but not one I would drink a lot of.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of sweet cherries. Taste is also dominated by sweet cherries, a touch of hops. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and is very drinkable. Overall this is a different and good quality beer.

Pours a clear, dark amber/honey color. Very little head or retention, all white and a thin film. No lace at all.
Smell is hops, malt, cherry syrup, pretty well balanced.
Taste is a good balance of hops and malt with a sweet, black cherry flavor throughout.
A tangy effervescence fades to a smooth finish, slightly dry with a mellow sweet cherry aftertaste. A nice beer overall. Would gladly have several more of these. Looking forward to trying others from Erie Brewing.

from notes:

Poured a copper color with a red/pink tint to it. Head is off-white in color and minimal but not awful. Nose is cherry up front with some grain and malt in the background. Mostly cherry though.

Taste is similar to the nose. Mostly cherry. Unfortunately, the cherry comes off a little too artificial for me. Not sure if they used artificial flavors or not, but thats the vibe I get. Kind of like a cherry soda.

I think this would be a good beer to help someone cross over from BMC brews, but not something I'd seek out on a regular basis.

Appearance: pale light red incolor with a short head. No lace develops on the glass.

Smell: cherry sweetness is plentiful here and easy to pull from the glass.

Taste: very sweet beer as the mild malt profile is loaded with a cherry syrup flavor. Very little bitterness here to balance it out. Almost soda-like IMHO.

Mouthfeel: lighter in body. Very crisp to start, less crisp at the finish. Cherry filled aftertaste lingers a bit.

Drinkability: this grew tiring on the tastebuds quickly. If you want a quick fruity refreshing beer, a small glass of this will do. Overall just a bit too sweet.

Served in 12 ounce bottle with no freshness date. Smooth creamlike mouthfeel. Sweet and tart cherrys, with a malty ale underneath. Very drinkable during the warm weather. A little lighter than the railbender ale, with some sweetness that makes this very drinkable.

On tap at The Tap Room on St. John, USVI. Poured a pale pinkish yellow color with a fizzy white head. Aromas of cherry, with a faint wet grain smell. Taste is quite pleasant and thirst quenching with cherry being the obvious dominating flavor. This basically tastes like soda with a mild malt flavor. Tasty if you are thirsty on a hot day but otherwise not much going on here.

A: Poured a nectarine orange with a bright clarity and an off white, patchy head that did little to stick around or impress. Visible effervesce was light, of tightly bound micro-bubbles that lazily rose to the surface. The color was not what I had in mind from the name, the head was sudsy and a non-factor and overall this just had no visual appeal.

S: The nose had light hints of cherry juice against a sugary cereal grain backing. Wish there was more to say here but mundane and again average at best.

T: The flavor was sweet, loaded with syrupy essence of cherry juice. Fruity with a touch of dry cherry skins sneak in midway through the experience before giving way to a slight tart finish. Overall the flavor was one-dimensional and overbearingly sweet and fruity.

M: The mouthful was flat, oily in texture and rather boring. A light to medium fullness.

D: Overall drinkability was less then average by my regards, way to sweet and overbearing to consume more then 1 with even that being a struggle. Halfway through the drink I questioned if it was worth it to finish.

12-oz bottle into nonic.

A: Copper colored with a substantial head that fades to impressive lacing.

S: Metallic cherry cough syrup. It's difficult to get past that.

T: Unfortunately, much like the smell. There is an overpowering cherry sucrettes taste that overpowers any other tastes present. Cherry up front, in the center and as a lingering aftertaste.

M: Medium body with a pleasant level of carbonation. Just about right for an ale.

D: The mouthfeel makes me think that this could be a half-way decent ale if the overpowering sweetness of the cherry were toned down. Maybe I could use this in a chocolate cake.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter - fridge - 2009

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange sunset color with a creamy looking white head. The bubbles are small, the formation is pillowy, with only 1/4" of height and not much retention at all.

Smell: Barley, biscuits, cranberry, old cherry.

Taste: Fairly light flavors of lifesaver cherry mixed with fresh cherries. The barley malt is flat and simplistic. Nothing fantastic here.

Mouthfeel: Fairly thin and partly tart. Some sugar and very little detectable alcohol.

Drinkability: Not an overtly complex beer, but it is slightly fruity and approachable for novices. Worth drinking as a lawnmower brew.

This is the ideal, refreshing fruit beer. Many fruit beers have a gross, nyquil taste, but Erie's black cherry smells, and tastes, like honest cherries. The rest of the beer has a mild, prickly carbonation and a simple, malty flavor. There's no head to speak of. It's like a tasty, malty, cherry soda that will get you drunk. That might not sound like much, but many breweries have tried, and failed, to craft it before. I will definitely have another, some day at the bar.

Reviewed from notes from a tasting on 01/09/2010

Formed a light single finger white head. Moderate retention with a small amount of lacing. Hazy body...brownish in the middle fading to pink edges.

The nose is fermented fruits, grains and sour cherries.

First taste is sweet almost fake tasting fruit syrup. This gives way to a sour cherry middle before an odd grainy finish.

Mouth feel is light, semi astringent with virtually no carbonation.

Drinkable, but will probably not seek out again.

When poured into a glass it was darker than average with a redish hue. And it smelled good; a little sweet; I'm not sure I could identify cherrys, though. This beer is easy to drink, kind of like soda pop. In fact I think the label says it all: "Malt Beverage with flavor added". So does that mean it is not really beer ?? Do they add syrup to it after it is done ??

Appearance: Good reddish hue accentuates the deep golden color of the beer. Decent sized head but didn't retain well.
Smell: A good deep fresh cherry aroma.
Taste: Crisp clean cherry flavor. Very deep, I almost got the feeling that the cherries were dried. There was some subtle malt flavor as well.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Very drinkable, crisp with a light carbonation making it easy to enjoy.

a-amber, with a reddish tint - maybe the cherries?

s- wonderful cherry smell. Deep and sweet.

t- cherry maltiness start to finish. super smooth. great creamy taste, as if your actually eating a cherry.

m- medium body. frothy, smooth. goes down very easy, with a perfectly balanced carbonation.

d- easy to drink. delicious beverage with a nice feel to it. fun drink to have, considering the awesome cherry flavoring. you could have a few of these.

Pours a golden yellow color with a very slight head and very minimal lacing if any. The aroma is of black cherries, but it isn't a cheap manaufactured smell. The smell is more of real cherries and there is a hint of earthy hops. The taste is of a perfect amount of cherry and some earthy hops. The taste is very smooth and well balanced. The mouthfeel is slightly watery but not too bad with a moderate amount of carbonation. Overall the drinkability is good, the taste is crisp and clean and not overpowering and leaves you wanting more. You could drink a lot of these in a session.

The beer poured a red toned golden color, clear with light carbonation and a two finger head.

The nose had nice cherry fruit tones, noticeable but not overpowering. I got a slight grass and bread note at the end.

The fruit carried well to the taste, again prominent but not overpowering. A reasonable dry finish with an earthy grain faint aftertaste.

The body is good for the style. Mouthfeel is good, making this a pretty easy drinking beer.
