Having this on-tap at the Sacsenheim. This beer draws a fairly dark, cloudy copper/brown color with a slightly off-white head that’s over an inch thick when first drawn. Settles to a thick ring lining the inside of the glass along with a nice thick surface coat of foam and good lacing. Aromas of toasted, bready caramel malt sweetness and a bit of raisin and plum along with the slightest hint of spice. The taste is pretty much the same, with bready, slightly toasted, caramel malt sweetness that gives way to hints of raisin and plum and a slight peppery spice note along with slight earthy hops. Has a slightly crisp, also smooth and frothy, slightly creamy, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate to heavy carbonation. Has a clean finish. Very easy to drink. Good representation of this style.

On tap at Bier Markt - Square One. Initially poured in a stylized Hacker Pschorr glass, it looked great but the pour was supposed to be 18 oz not 14, so I requested a different glass. Ended up with about 18oz in a regular pint glass (why they couldn't have served in the Erdinger weizen glass, I do not know?)

Appearance - Murky and muddy brown with sort of a gray or purple tinge to it. Impressive two plus fingers of fluffy slow receding very light tan head. Looks exactly the way a dunkelweizen should.

Smell - Banana, subtle bit of clove but bits of chocolate and a wheat grain aspect. Basically chocolate and banana muffins with a touch of clove. There's also some dark fruit in the background that elevates it slightly above some of its competition.

Taste - Pretty much like the nose with some banana (but less than the hefe), chocolate, wheat and grainy flavors and dakr fruit again. FLavors are a little subdued compared to the nose, was expecting a slightl more robust combo but still quite tasty.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, creamy from the wheat, good carbonation, fairly light and drinkable and eminently crushable.

Overall - Despite a slight let down on flavor, this is one of the better dunkelweizens out there on the market and wish it were something more accessible in my region, so hopefully in the future I can enjoy this in an appropriate glass and at 30-40% of the cost.

Had this as a draft in one of those elongated pint glasses, looked good and tasted decent....

Once the brew showed up at our table I was impressed with the frothy head that had decent staying power and a good amount of lacing down the glass. The beer had a sweet smell too it that blended well with the malty undertone. Though it was very carbonated, it was medium-bodied and tasted smoother the warmer it got. The taste was a mixture of grass, coriander, and light on hops, like I mentioned making for a smooth finish. Not the best German brew I've had, but well pleased with the selection.

Draft at Cafe Berlin in D.C.

Mahogany body with a white, frothy sea foam head. Aromas of clove, light spice, malt. Fresh, distinctly German, and delicious.
