4.5/5  rDev +12.8%
look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance: Pours a cloudy auburn color topped by a marshmallow head; great retention and lacing

Smell: Wheat bread and bananas, with hints of clove

Taste: Like the aroma, the flavor profile is dominated by the wheat bread and banana flavors; by mid-palate, the tangy yeast adds an interesting dimension and the finish adds a bit of clove; nice tartness in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body; rather creamy; with a slightly prickly carbonation

Overall: A great example of a style that I really enjoy

16 ounce pint - $5.50 at Taco Mac in Canton, Georgia.

Appearance: Simply clouded, dark amber body with a medium-small, ivory hued head fed by sporadic bubble streams.

Smell: Malty notes of caramel and toast with a vibrant banana scent (the latter coming through more so here than in the flavor), malted wheat, and a low, low spice hint.

Taste: Sweetish taste of caramel glazed toasted, thick-cut wheat bread topped with a bit of banana. Slight tanginess from the wheat malt. Modest clove-like spice accent. Very lightly bitter with no more than a gentle touch of hops. Drying, neutral finish as the flavors just drop off, scrubbed away by the active suds.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Fluffy mouthfeel.

Overall: As with the other Hacker-Pschorr beers I've had over the years, it's firmly just OK.

From: BInny's, Champaign, IL
Date: Best by 2014-03-01 (drank 2014-02-12)
Glass: Weihenstephan weizen glass

Hacker Pschorr's dunkelweizen is not one of their stronger beers, being a bit thin in aroma and feel, but with an above-average, though still not top-tier, flavor.

Head of 2cm in height, good retention of several minutes, lingering cap atop body of beer. Lacing is good, not excellent, a few big patterns and some smaller dots cling to side of glass. Body is dark brown in color, light brings out golden orange and brown hues, with a bit of yellow around the edges. Carbonation visible through nearly opaque body (90% opacity), high in number and activity.

Aroma of very light caramel-like sweetness, some light bread, yeast, and vanilla. Pleasant enough, but not particularly expressive or deep. Above average, but just barely so.

Flavor is of mild toasted bread and nuts, light caramel-like sweetness, banana ester, and yeast. Flavors are moderately upfront and robust, but nothing stands out particularly strongly. Good, but not excellent; also, a bit watery in flavor around the edges.

Beer is medium-light in body, with medium-low carbonation, creating a lightly foamy (1/2) and smooth (1/2) mouthfeel. A bit too thin and undercarbonated for the style, this feels a bit watery around the edges of each sip. Closes dry, with medium-high stickiness clinging to the palate and lips.

Bottle purchased at Beertopia, in Omaha, NE.
Best by 6/2011 on bottle (why did I buy this?)
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass.

Pours a fairly large, thick head composed of small bubbles. Peering at the body, I notice aggressive streams of carbonation and the opaque character; obviously unfiltered. Very dark copper brown in color away from light, when held up to a source, the body is a caramel brown color with orange highlights. Head descends in a few minutes, eventually becoming a 0.5cm cap atop the beer. Some lacing, mostly dots and streaks, are left along the sides of the glass.

Aroma of malt sweetness, some vanilla, bananas, not much clove.

Taste is largely of dark barley and wheat malt, with mildly expressive banana esters and some residual spicy clove phenols. I imagine this was much stronger and enjoyable fresh.

Beer is medium-bodied, with bit of wateriness around the edges. Carbonation level is high enough that this moves pleasantly along on the palate while sampling. Finish is pleasantly dry, inviting the next sip.

I know this was an old beer and I'm somewhat disappointed that I bought it, but did so because it's rarely seen in these parts. Will revisit again when I can find a fresh bottle.

Had this on 2011-11-27 in Columbia, PA

A - Very hazy , leather-brown with a 2-finger light tan head that fades to 1/2 finger quickly.

S - Lots of clove, some banana, touch of apple cider sweetness.

T - Delicious. The roasted, sweet malt mixes with the banana and clove, conjuring again the illusion of fresh-pressed apple cider. Of course, unlike cider, this dries nicely and pretty clean.

M - Medium body and high carbonation give a cleansing and thirst quenching feel.

O - I just finished a vigorous 15-mile hike and sat down to enjoy this beer. It tasted great and sure is a nice start to replacing the electrolytes I crave (see the movie Idiocracy if you don't get this joke).

App- It has a honey brown body and a half finger of soapy head. There is a good amount of lacing. This is an attractive beer.

Smell- This one has a leathery, roasted malt scent. There are also earthy herbal notes in it, makes for an interesting nose!

Taste- Wow, I was not expecting such a citrus taste. Is this really lemon and orange in here? It mixes with that same earthy herbal hop noted in the nose. The finish brings out a floral taste too. For such a dark beer, there is little malt character involved.

Mouth feel- This is between a medium and light body. It is just a little bit fizzy. This is about perfect for the flavor profiles.

Overall- An interesting beer for sure, but really, it is 98% hefe and 2% dunkle. Find yourself a good hefe and go with that.

A: Cloudy dark carmel color with big frothy head that fades slowly.

S: Great aroma. Bubblegum and ripe bananas. Hints of clove and spice. Very nice.

T: Sweet carmel malt. Yeasty with hints of light spice. Some banana and toasted wheat. Light hops as it finishes.

M: Low carbonation, slightly watery.

D: This is a very good dunkelweizen, and a perfect great example of the style. I could drink these all night.
