Presentation: 12 oz bottle into an nonic. Big thanks to "beveritt" for dragging this back for me from somewhere.

A- Quite hazy, golden/ light copper. Pours with ~1 finger of off-white head, which fades slowly into a thin cap.

S- A light citrus hopiness. Slightly bready, caramel sweet notes.

T- Slightly caramel sweetness. Cidery, tea like bitterness...almost comes across as metallic. Not really working well.

M- Moderately high carbonation with a fairly light feel.

D- OK. Smell OK, taste a bit lacking....could plow through a few, but really no compelling reason to do so.

Future outlook: A pretty "meh" offering...not available here....no future outlook...

This just metallic, astringent and bitter. This brewery is historically pretty bad- and this is one of their absolute. Beyond just bitterness, there's nothing to recommend here- it's just a boring and flawed beer.

Suprisingly bitter with hops which I enjoyed. Tasted more like an IPA. Worth picking up, especially if you live in Canandaigua NY

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #45 (Oct 2010):

Head and lacing has a likeness of a well-groomed latte, hazy sunset, orange-amber color. Citric woody hop, chalky yeast and nutty toasted maltiness with a hint of caramel all seem to make for a beautiful nose. Moderate-size body with a quick spank of crispness. Full malt jacket, from toasted biscuit to a subtle layer of caramel. Hops just don't sit around; a bitterness bites back, and citric peel and leafy flavors stay with the taste buds for a good while. Soild, sessionable, a little raw and even a touch complex. Choice pick.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber color with a respectable head that deposits a few dots and dashes of lace

Smell: Toasty, with a rather grainy character

Taste: Toasted bread and a hint of caramel, up front, with a rather harsh, somewhat herbal hop character that develops by mid-palate; after the swallow, the hops continue to stay in the forefront, though they take on a grainy aspect in the finish; the touch of caramel underpins, throughout

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: A respectable APA, but I am not enamored with the hop bill

Thanks, sliverx, for the opportunity and RochesterAaron, for the chance to revisit

Canandaigua Lake Ale....purchased in a bottle at Wegman's. 400th Review..woot.

Appearance-mild amber color, whispy head that withers quickly out of the bottle.

Smell-light aroma of malt mixture and alcohol, hops suprisingly non-existent.

Taste/Mouthfeel-light to medium mouthfeel, malt upfront, later on a sourness mixed with hops, muddled throughout, flavors don't match, aftertaste is an ugly sour.

Drinkability-muddled flavors, doesn't exactly work.

Overall-a dissapointment, with so many great APAs out there it's impossible to recommend this. Jumbled flavors and a lack of character. Avoid.

Poured a hazy medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured grassy and herbal hops and a light grainy malt. Some caramel as well.

The taste consisted of a moderate grainy malt, a vibrant grassy hop and a residual herbal spice.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style with a strange artificial dryness at the finish.

Overall a good, refreshing APA. User friendly and very drinkable.

Pours a hazy golden with a thin white head. Good retention and a very nice lacing. Aroma is of sweet fruit gone a little bad. Body is medium with some carbonation. Taste is sugary but with a sour edge.Sour not bitter. Not sure what they are trying to do here but in my opinion it didn't work.

Picked up a single at Wegman's. This reminds me more of the American-style bitters I've tried like Bitter Brewer and Bitter American. It's also a bit like a hopped-up version of Ballantine Ale. There's a sharp piney grapefruit note up front with a grassy finish. There's a little toasty barley in the background and all over the aroma. In fact, I don't really pick up the hops as I smell the beer.

There are a few better session-strength pale ale (see names above), but this is a fine beer and I appreciate that someone's making hoppy beer on the lower end of the abv spectrum.
