This beer was served from the tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a house pint glass, showing a toasted amber coloring. It boasted a one finger tall head of eggshell bubbles, showing nice retention, and leaving wet spots of lacing dripping down the sides of the glass. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be light. The nose gave sweetness of pineapple sugars, passion fruit juiciness, tobacco leafiness, and the freshest grapefruit hoppiness. With warmth the hops became deeper, with more earth and bitterness. We also got notes of lightly toasted caramel malts, booze, starchy saltiness, and light honey sweetness to balance. Our first impression was that the flavoring showed very dark and earthy hops, but with bright green leaf freshness. As we sipped, the taste opened with dirty earthy hops, pale but thickly toasted malts, green leaf resin, mineral booziness, musk and dust, and wet yeasty bite. The mustiness and fiery booze enhanced to the peak, where the hops also took on a more bitter, resiny robustness of their own. Washing to the peak were pale and caramel malts, medicinal and plastic phenols, herbal and earthy hops, bittered grassiness, and faint buttery diacetyls. The aftertaste breathed of muddy pale malts, big mineral and musk, marijuana leafiness, fusel booze, aluminum, and echoes of caramel sweetness. The body was medium to full, and the carbonation was light, and a bit flat at times. There was great slurp and smack to each sip, with decent cream and froth on the lip. The mouth was wetly coated, with eventual pucker, and mild astringent dryness. The evaporating booze gave a final coolness to the palate. The abv was fine, and the beer drank easily.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was the big aromatic complexity, and its evolution throughout the tasting. At first whiff there was nice fruitiness, with fresh citric qualities to the hops. As the beer warmed, however, the components enhanced and blended together nicely, giving more solid bitterness and earthiness to the hops, while leaving room for with pale toastiness from the grain bill. This sweetness in the nose makes the following sip a bit of a surprise, as it hits with more bitterness, phenols, and booze than any of those sweet aromatic components. This is a nice, bold beer from CB’s, with a thicker, more inviting mouthfeel than a lot of their other stock, and when coupled with the great, hoppy freshness, it makes for a definite treat.
