on tap at one of the college bars in Geneva, ny. frustrating they would pour such a nice ale into a plastic cup, still charge me five bucks, and disrespect both of us that way, but what did I expect at this Hobart hotspot? dark copper in color with over an inch of fizzy off white head that lasts quite awhile. curious aromatics. pumpkin pie spice, but there is something else different, maybe ginger, crystalized ginger, sweet and earthy with a pungent spice to it. that's what I would guess anyway, but its hard to know for sure. something peps this right up, gives it a little sweetness along with the malt, and makes it stand out from the crowd. there could also be a little rye in the malt mix, which could account for some of that, but the other tell tale signs of rye are absent. its a sweeter and fuller bodied base, still quite drinkable if you don't mind all the spice. the pumpkin itself isn't apparent to me, but it doesn't hurt this one like it does others. good beer overall, an enjoyable different take on our fall classic.

8/29...pours cold dark copper, patchy foam on top. Sweet honey nutmeg pumpkin nose. Cinnamon pumpkin taste, slightly sweet, quick fade and finish. Light bitter. Little spice in the close. Decent.

Poured aggressively into a pub glass, producing a 1 1/2 finger, creamy head that sticks around for several minutes before receding. Reddish brown, dark copper, like fall leaves in the glass. Retains a faint crown of sudsy lace throughout. Good clarity, with a blurry haze.

Aromas on the nose are... unexpected. Sugar, maple syrup, a hint of banana, and... canned peaches. Candied notes of fruits and confections dance out of the glass onto the nose. Very interesting. Different for the style. Some cotton candy and a wisp of bubble gum in there, and even a subtle strand of watermelon. Wow, that's cool and not at all expected.

The candy shop nose is followed on the taste. Big peace flavors, definitely pumpkin and the spices start to come through to reveal themselves. Vanilla, powdered sugar, vegetal squash flavors, and a soft kiss of booze. Pumpkin pie in a bottle? Sure, but also a bit more. The malts come through nicely. On the sweeter side, but not at all obstrusive.

The mouthfeel is spot on for the style. A light, lager-y brew, that would have a clean finish save for the spices and flavors that linger... mostly the peach, vanilla, and cinnamon.

Overall, a pumpkin beer I can get down with. One that I think I'll want to revisit. Spice forward, but they must be adding vanilla or something to be producing those off fruity, floral (peach) flavors. Almost feels like it was aged in oak, without having the weight.

A - Beautiful amber color with full fluffy blonde head and delicate lacing
S - unmistakably butterscotchy with a whiff of toasted grains
T - not too candy-like. again, hits you with butterscotch, browned butter and malt. not too heavy on pumpkin, which increases drinkability, imho.
F - smooth and satiny in the mouth, balanced carbonation.

Overall, I really enjoy this beer which tastes vaguely autumnal, but is not stereotypically over-spiced or fake tasting. Solid foundation of toasty malt and sweet, sun-drenched oat and wheat makes this a really excellent fall beer.
