12oz. bottle.

Pours a deep burnt brown with ruby red highlights. A small tan head appears and then disappears quickly. Lacing is little to none. Scents are mellow coffee. Some sweet creamy chocolate and a burnt coffee finish.

Flavors start nice and crisp. Some dark fruits. Toasted malts and a nice nutty coffee flavor. All the flavors are nicely balanced and the porter is tasting great up to this point. A smooth creamy chocolate becomes noticeable. It is building and then the flavors stop.??? After a few seconds there is a sour unpleasant aftertaste. It was great up until the end. Sad.

Medium bodied. There is a slick feeling in the mouth. It takes away any smoothness and hurts this porter as it works in conjunction with the aftertaste. I think this is an okay porter. Just above average.

Dark chestnut color with some ruby highlights. Covered with a huge, chunky light brown head. Aroma is very light, consisting of toasted malt. Flavor is deep and rich, full of dark malt, chocolate, and hints of raisin and coffee. There is also a hint of alcohol that lingers afterwards. Only complaint is that it seems overcarbonated, and too foamy and tingly. Other than that, a very nice beer.

This one poured a dark brown color with a light head that dissipated quickly. No lace to be seen, which is not good. This one tasted very thick and chocolately. Kind of a harsh malt jolt comes through in the middle. Caramel seems to be there with toffee maybe. Finishes slightly bitter. Has a dirt flavor that came off strange to me. A solid beer but one that seemed to lose flavor the more I drank of it.

Beer pours a deep ruby color, and a small bubbly tan head. Smell is sweet malt, with chocolate tones, and a little caramel. Taste starts with strong chocolate flavor, roasted malts, a little nut. Finishes with a mild hop bite and alcohol taste. Aftertaste is a subtle chocolate and caramel. Body is medium, with the right amount of carbonation.

Very drinkable, and a nice balanced flavor, gets better as it warms.

Dark black color, medium head. Roasted malt aroma, hint of chocolate. Full-bodied porter. Chocolate malts, slightly sweet with some oat like undertones. Somewhat hoppy for a porter. A little sweet. But the sweetness diminishes as the beer warms. A very drinkable porter.

A clear, very deep mahogany body reveals ruby highlights when held to the light. The creamy head needs to be coaxed in the pour, and then steadily dies down to a collar. Unfortunately, no lace is left about the glass. Deeply roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and soft cocoa appear in the nose. With some further searching a touch of nutty caramel and some delicate, floral hops can be found. It's lightly crisp on the tongue, before warming to become lightly creamy and silky smooth. The carbonation is quite fine, and adds greatly to the medium body. The flavor is much softer and less acidic that the deep roasted nose might suggest, yet it remains full flavored. It's very nicely balanced between a sweet toffee and milk chocolate maltiness (accentuated by a berry-like fruitiness) and mild hop bitterness. Roasted coffee notes and darker chocolate do appear, however, in the lingering dry finish. Very impressive! A surprisingly flavorful and complex porter with a great drinkability.

Butte Creek Organic Porter: the other reviews asked where is the head? Well, it appears to be in my bottle. Holy Christmas, talk about one hell of a lot of foam! Thick effusive pour, almost over the top of an imperial pint, and that’s only about a third of the bottle. Ok things have settled down. Very deep color, ruby when held up to the strongest light. The amazing head from hell dissipates fairly quickly to a smooth quarter inch. Nice aroma, very nice coffee tones. Very nice taste, in an end of the evening type of sense. Very nice coffee tastes, with a hint of dark chocolate and just the barest hint of burnt toast. Nice smooth mouthfeel, not at all heavy. I’d pick up another one.

Impressive porter from yet another fine California brewery. Dark browm with hardly any head and very little lacing. Nice aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Smooth and slightly bitter with good roasted flavor, chocolate and a slight hint of alcohol. I didn't find this too thin as others have, nice full body and an over all decent porter.

OK this is another brand I am taking a chance on tonight..I had tasted their Organic Ale and it was really not good..so what the heck I love porters maybe i will have more luck.
The beer comes in a brown long neck..with a nice country scene on the label..this beer is apparentlly USDA certified organic.
After a fairly vigourous pour the beer looked handsome enough in my glass..deep dark ruby red in colour ,when held to the light.
Small but relativlly attractive head that dissapated to a nice creamy lace.
mmm this beer has a nice aroma..nice dark roasted malts....milky aroma..like chocolate milk.
Nice clean porter taste in this brew nice milk chocolate taste at the front followed by a mellow bitterness..very creamy..i liked this.
Some fruitiness even detected as i swill it over my tongue.
Very smooth and excellent on the tongue..nice after tatses.
Very drinkable porter .
NOTES: well done Butte Creek you have restored my faith in organic ales..

It's very dark brown with burgundy highlights when held up to the light. A very small head goes away fast leaving just a ring. The aroma is mellow roastiness. This medium bodied, low carbonation brew starts with a pleasant roastiness flavor and chocolate. A solid hop presence comes through in the finish. It does seem a little thin but it's definitely easy to drink. A slightly bland but enjoyable porter this is.

The beer pours a very deep garnet to brown color, the head creamy smooth in texture, the size massive, and the lace fine diaphanous sheets they lay lovingly on the sides of the glass. Nose is sweet milk chocolate, hints of caramel and toffee, malt underlies it all, a real treat for the old smeller. Begins pleasantly sweet malt, the top middling in mouth feel. Finish is modestly carbonated, specially hopped; the aftertaste burned dry toast. Which by the way I happen to like? Mom also thought me strange, but loved me anyway. It can be said the beer is a tad waterish, but I don’t see it, as a detriment to this must quaffable “Porter”.

Pours with a huge tan head that required several stops in the pouring before I could get the whole bottle out. Nice brownish/slighlty red color to it but the head fades after its initial exuberence. Malty sweetness with some dark chocolatey tones is present in the aroma but without much more. Nice sweet chocolatey tones and good malty sweetness with the slightest bit of roasted coffee lingering in the background to provide a hint of bitterness towards the end. Very tasty. Silky smooth on the tongue with a good body to it. This makes a great breakfast beer as I'm enjoying it right on the tails of my egg, turkey, and cheese sandwich. Great brew that would definitely make for some nice session drinking.

This beer was a mixed bag for me. I found it drinkable and refreshing, but I don't like it when there is little or no head and lace is almost nil. Still it had a nice roastiness to it and was smooth and enjoyable to drink. All in all a decent porter but not one I will "have to have"

Not a bad brown porter. A nice full body. Dark malts give this one a tasty roasted flavor, not very assertive on the hop front. Easily consumed with alcohol content apparent in the finish.

Dark brown to black beer, no head, thin soapy beige bubbles floating on top. Very complex smell with hints of licorice, roasted malt, unsweetened chocolate, plums, and alcohol. Thick and slightly prickly texture on the tounge. As with the smell, very complex roasted malt, licorice, and alcohol tasted upfront, with a faintly percieved bitterness that cleans the malt from the palate and makes you want another sip, and another, and another... an excellent porter.
