On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours black with an eggshell white head, light head retention, spotty lace.

S: Notes of roasted malt, some chocolate and charcoal, but not too aromatic.

T: Burnt toast with some dark caramelized sugar and malt. Very classic in its approach, not Americanized at all.

M: Light-bodied, refreshing, very easy drinking.

O: A lovely black lager, to style with excellent flavour. Well worth a try.

Mouthfeel is thin and crisp. Can't tell it's even beer based on mouthful, more like a thicker soda with moderate carbonation.

Smell and taste are great. First stone fruit and a little caramel, second smoked peet and light ash, third a slight sweetness alongside bubbling at the tip of the tongue, no heat throughout. Would pair well with a wide range of foods as it leaves the palate refreshed and largely neutral, perhaps with a slight burnt caramel aftertaste.

Overall, if you're into black lagers, this is an excellent choice.

This is a new beer from Moonlight that I just had at Flavor in Santa Rosa. It appears to be another Schwarzbier variation but is quite different from Death & Taxes and excellent.

Black, it has a rich dark tan head, slowly shrinking to a thin foamy top, leaving a little nice lace.

Aroma is dark dried fruits - dark figs, prunes, with hints of charcoal, plums, dark toast, red wine.

Taste is fairly similar, some dark dried fruits, dark toast, winy plum, hints of charcoal dryness. It has a hint of light sour fruits (plums), almost like a bit of a sour ale, mixing with the light sweetness and the light roasty bitterness, along with hints of charcoal coming through, giving it an interesting complexity and well-rounded character. It is nicely drinkable and very enjoyable.
