The Hoptical Illusion pours from the 12oz bottle into my SN tulip a crisply autumnal amber orange with a nice inch of cragly white foam on top. Lots of active carbonation rushes up from the bottom. Aromas of rich sweet caramel intertwine with resinous citric, pine bough hops. Fresh sticky green hops flash in my mind. Pink grapefruit, orange, peach, herbal goodness.
First sip brings an underlying body of caramelly pale malts overlayed by a heavy helping of grapefruity citric hops. Hints of pine needles. A sweet onset is followed by a steady increase in bitterness on the way down. Slightly bready on the finish with a lingering green bitter hop oil. A pretty darn tasty IPA that brings the hops.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with small, fast moving cluster carbonation that dances across the palate. This is the type of brew that is almost gone before you even start drinking it. I would love to have a sixer...but alas this lone bottle is all I have. A nice showing here out of Long Island.

Had this beer from a can kept in my hotel’s cooler on Long Island. Poured into a plastic hotel cup. The beer was game. Golden yellow color with good white head and good curtain lacing. Citrus and floral smell and taste. Tangerine, vanilla and honey. A bit too sweet. Good feel. Reasonable.

Hoptical Illusion on cask at the brewery on 1/27/2023. I wasn't a big fan of bottled Hoptical, but the cask version works out fine. The cask pour was, for me, at a good "warm" temperature and very mild carbonation. The overall impression is a balanced light amber drink. Thanks to ABInbev for maintaining cask in central Long Island.

Completely lacking in a hop profile and supremely boring. I guess the illusion is that this is supposed to be hoppy.

Small head poured from a 12 ounce can with BB date of 07/03/21. Nose is hoppy and piney. Taste is malt sweetness, pine, some hops, not much of anything else. Has a bitter finish. It's easy enough to drink, but just an average IPA that steers closer to a west coast style than the new england style printed on the can.
