12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Deep reddish amber hue, good clarity with a wisp of lacing on top. Fruity, toasty, malty nose ... hint of alcohol in there as well. Toasted malt, mild stone fruit, bready graininess, and faint caramel. A kiss of alcohol, spicy hop, and a clean palate throughout. A bit too scrubbed, just enough flavor to garner that "robust" tag the brewer states. A good pick for a malty non-spiced winter brew.

Bottle dated 21 Sept 2015 into pint glass. Pours a gorgeous deep amber with an off-white head. Initial impression is a dominant nutty flavor, with a slight caramel/molasses sweetness. A little alcohol warming going on (?!?? - it's only 7%, for chrissakes!), plus a subtle hops bite, but generally a very smooth beer. Medium mouthfeel. Dry finish. Not bad.

While I enjoy the aromatic qualities of chocolate and brown sugar, there isn't much else to it. I feel this could have benefited with some fruity ale esters - this smells like a run of the mill brown ale. Actually, dark fruits show up on the flavor profile, albeit generic and muddled. It starts with caramel and toffee in particular, while ends with a gentle hoppy bite. With its full mouthfeel and creamy slickness, it's not the easiest drinker ever. Still, it works as a sipper. I guess. A run of the mill amber ale, enough said.

2.88/5: Nothing exciting here, move along

A: [4.00] Pours a nice mahogany color. Fors a small 1/2 finger of off white head. the head is creamy with dense bubbles. The head is gone pretty quickly. The bottle lists the ABV (7%) and there is a date code. I think it indicates this beer is 6 months old.

S: [2.00] Almost no nose. I am whiffing and whiffing. There is just nothing.

T: [2.75] I am getting a lot of alcohol coming through. That is weird for a 7% beer. It also has a bit of weird hop presence.

M: [2.75] The feel is okay - but there is a long lingering dry/bitter finish from the alcohol and the hops. It is not a pleasant finish.

O: [2.75] This is either a really old bottle and this doesn't age well - or - this is not a good beer. I am not enjoying this one. There is no nose at all. The taste is alcohol and weird bitter. I almost feel like I am drinking a bad scotch. It is just off for me.
