Notes: While birds of a feather stick together, their wings should not. We blew our cap seeing images of oilslick seabirds and thinking about what may happen to more of our fine, feathered-friends as they migrate south this fall, so we hatched this flighty idea for a specialty brew called 'Toxic Sludge'.
All of the proceeds will benefit Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research's "Spreading Our Wings" campaign and their efforts to build a Wildlife Response Annex. To learn more, please visit:
In times of crisis (like this) we figure you can either hibernate or participate.
Try this tasty, dry-hopped black IPA. It's as smooth as water off a duck's back. So everytime you drink one, please let out a loud squawk in honor of our beautiful, beaked brethen.
We hope you can dig deep in your hearts (and pockets) to help support the effort.

Be Well,

Served in a pint glass.

This beer is a deep, deep red when held up to light with barely any light coming through. The head was a good 3-4 fingers when first poured, and dissipated quickly. There was quite a bit of lacing in along the glass. There was not very many bubbles coming up along the side of the glass.

The first few sips were from the dark side - roasted malt, chocolate, and some slight nuttiness. Then the hops came in - some nice citrus and spicy floral notes. There's a little bit of graininess, too. Overall a very pleasant smelling brew!

At the front of the tongue, some nice sweet maltiness and chocolate notes came through in a big way. Very soon after, the hops hit. This isn't as bitter as other Black IPAs that I've had, but it's got a nice big bitterness that mixes well with the roasted malt and chocolate flavors. It resembles very dark bitter chocolate without much of the chocolate sweetness. There's a slight artificial flavor that hits midway through, but the aftertaste is excellent. This is a really nice tasting beer!

There isn't much carbonation to speak of, but it works in this beer. There is a slight sweetness at the front, but it finishes nice and dry which makes you want to keep on drinking it! The mouthfeel is very balanced, and it's very easy drinking.

Ah, Black IPAs (or IBAs, or whatever they're called) are becoming so popular. I welcome the popularity. This is a nice example of the style. It's not the greatest example, but it's a really well-made beer (especially for a beer called Toxic Sludge!). This was an extra in a trade, so I'm glad I got the opportunity to try it. It's for a good cause, so I say drink up!

On tap at the Cambridge House in Granby CT.

Look- Dark, just about black with a thick tan head that lasts a bit and leaves plenty of lacing.

Smell- Very sweet and more on the malt side. A little vanilla and caramel maybe.

Taste- Surprisingly hoppy, didnt expect that from the smell. A little bight from the alcohol but not in a bad way, the alcohol taste is blended in nicely.

MF- Heavy body, warmth from alcohol, decent amount of carbonation.

Overall- Unique beer, glad I tried it. It tastes like a very hoppy stout almost. I know that sounds like an oxymoron but thats the only way I can think of to sum it up.

Ok, weed-wacking is done for the day; lunch has been eaten.... Let the shenanigans commence... Part one today is a 16oz can of Toxic Sludge, enjoyed out in the 'Zebo...

Poured slowly into an imperial nonic, it is rather foamy. Color is a clear, deep chestnut; too dark to espy any carbo. Head is a creamy, rocky, 1" layer of tan foam, slowly receding with nicve lace left in its wake. Aroma is a roasty/choco mix, with minimal hopping detected. The bier feels fairly smooth, but the body is a smidge on the thinner side of medium.

Flavor starts off with more choco/roasty action, plus some light malty sweetness. It has some mild , charred bitterness, then ides into some floral hoppiness. There's also a bit of rindy citrus thrown into the mix. Though I have had better BIPAs, this isn't bad... Prosit!!

a deep brown with 3 fingers of head which caused very resinous lacing through the entire glass. smell of grassy hops with lots of dark roast notes, coffee and chocolate. the flavor is really more of a hoppy stout.. earthy bitterness with lots of dark roasted flavor, black coffee, and dark cocoa nibs. medium body on the watery side, medium carbonation.

i was a little bit let down by this one, was expecting lots more hop flavor from it. it does have a cool can design at least, though i think any graphic designer would disagree of their font selections, lol.

$5.00 bomber from Abe's.

Not really black, but dark brown, with light brown highlights. Billowing light tan head fills the top of my glass. Nice dripping lace effect.

Roast coffee with milk aroma, with maybe some earthy herbal hoppiness. Really smells like ice coffee.

Coffee with milk beginning. Then earthy hoppiness to the swallow and a softly lingering aftertaste.

Extraordinary smooth mouthfeel. Silky.

Drinks easy, smoothly.

A terrific beer, though far more porter than black IPA to me. Either way, worth a try.

On tap at the Mellow in Greensboro.Poured into a stanard pint a deep cola color with a 1/2 finger tannish colored head atop.Dark roast and earthy tones with mild bitter chocolate upfront in the nose, piney hops come into play late and linger well.Dry and roasty on the palate mixing with piney hops, light bitter chocolate as well, like others have said it seems more like a hopped up porter. It's not bad but again it seems more of a porter than a IA in my opinion.

Ruby brown with a half inch of tightly bubbled foam that lingers very very long. Very low aroma of faint hops. Initial flavor of dark malt, morphing quickly to grapefruit and orange rind. Very balanced, not too black and not too IPA. Could actually use a little more oomph on both ends of the spectrum. Full mouthfeel, a bit tannic, but satisfying. Drinkable beer, but could use more character for my tastes.

On the edge of being black-jet brown perhaps? Sizeable tan head. Decent floral and hoppy aroma. Good hop blast upfront flavor wise-nice blend of bitterness and hop flavor. Roasted grains are somewhat faint and in the backround. Very mild anise or licorice tinge. Good body. Very drinkable beer. My 2nd try at this style-works for me.

Drank a cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter.
Pours a nice deep cola brown with fluffy tan head of 3 cm foaming up and fading gradually to a sturday surface layer.
Tight lattice persists throughout the sampling on the glass.
ARoma is caramel and toffee malts with some citrus but mostly earthy hops. Well balanced nose.
First sip reveals an average body with gentle rolling carbonation.
Flavor is roasted malt almost to coffee ground status, with some drying dark cocoa on the finish. I dont get nearly the hops that I anticipated from the nose and style. But there are some mild earth notes and bits of citrus grapefruit, but mostly malt profile on the flavor.
The beer is well balanced and intersting. No hints of ABV and the smooth texture make this easy to drink. I would enjoy another bottle of this highly drinkable brew!

Draught @ Cambridge House: This one poured a fairly opaque black color. The was a small amount of a tan head on it that left a bit of lacing. This has a nice nose to it. Lots of piney hops, with some grassiness, chocolate and roastiness to it also. The taste is also very good. Piney, chocolate, grassiness. Not quite as bitter as I would expect for an IPA, but still a fair amount of bite. Definitely worth checking out!

I first had this on tap at Rattle N Hum in NYC and was psyched to find this bottle recently.

Pours dark brown with some ruby highlights.Thin, tight head with nice lacing.

Aroma is chocolate, cocoa, coffee, grapefruit, lemon/lime and Play-Doh.

Taste is a nice combo of hop bitterness and malt sweetness. It leans on being sort of toasty/biscuity with nice citrus flavors as well. Two things that shouldn't go well together but do. This definitely has a finish that keeps me going back for more. Nice and well-rounded with plenty of great flavor and complexity.

As far as this relatively new style goes I'd say this is one of the examples I've liked the most.

The hops have faded somewhat, yet the shwartzbier, roasted black beer aroma and flavour remain. And so I get a somewhat citrus integrated shwartz. Good aroma, good colour and off-white head and lace. Very drinkable. Pleasant, below average as a straight out black ipa.Can from Steve in Warren. Middling mouthfeel.
