A - Pours a light amber colour, thin layer of head with no retention and some sporadic lacing.

S - Grainy, grassy hop notes, caramel, toffee and musty wet cardboard on the finish.

T - Rather mild, but earthy buttered bread, grassy notes, musty grains and a sour citrus bitterness that lingers.

M - Typical of most Trafalgar releases, a thin bodied and watery brew that finishes with a touch of dryness on the finish.

O - A decent ale that offers up the staples of the style, yet tends to under deliver in the flavour department. Not the greatest, but it's still drinkable.

A: Slight cloudiness, cuprous red.

S: Limited, but as an ESB I don't hold this against this. Faint hop and malt notes, but almost totally absent.

T: I can only really describe this beer as bland. At first, there's no real taste, but a solid mouth feel. Only much later do you collect a bitterness to it.

M: I do Like the mouth feel, it bites the tongue. I think this is partly why you can taste so little.

O: I wouldn't recommend this beer for purchase. It's pretty forgettable. Tastes nothing like a hobo's butthole. Also, not to be catty, but I found the label very unappealing.

500 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO; best before Dec. 2014 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear copper-amber colour, topped with just over one finger's worth of frothy, creamy off-white head. Good retention; it slowly seeps away over the next five minutes or so, leaving behind plenty of lace and eventually, a modest cap and collar. The aroma is malty, but modestly so - toasted nuts, toffee, molasses and bread crust notes come through, with a touch of earthy hops.

A decent English-style bitter. Bready malts, toasted nuts and butterscotch are the most prominent flavours, with a somewhat grassy, earthy bitterness coming through on the tail end. Mild, lingering bittersweet flavour. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with mild carbonation and a somewhat watery mouthfeel. There's nothing wrong with this beer, other than maybe the price - I mean, actual imported ESBs usually cost less than this.

Final Grade: 3.29, a C+. Trafalgar ESB makes for a decent glass, though it's not something I'll be rushing back to in a hurry. This is probably one of their more approachable beers, and it's definitely one of their more accessible ones. Give it a shot, but IMO this one falls a little short of stuff like Wells Bombardier or Hobgoblin.
