Tried both in bottle and on tap at Chancey Smith's.

A - Pours black with backlit brown highlights. A thick one inch caramel head. Very nice lacing as well.

S - Excellent aroma. Smokey, roasty, slight chocolate, and biscuit.

T - Similar to smell, even more roast. A bit of bacon, coffee bean, mild licorice, a touch of maple syrup, with hops lingering. The flavour is balanced evenly with sweetness and bitterness.

M - On tap was a bit thicker than the bottle, but overall it's a full and creamy mouthfeel; fitting for the style.

D - The perfect breakfast beer.

Got this fro herrorara last summer. This was the winning beer from the Toronto Homebrewers Contest, who then got to have the recepie brewed at Amsterdam. Cheers!

APPEARANCE: Pours out brown and yields a three finger, looser looking, tan head with good retention. Opaque black with piles of carbonation evident. Head eventually fades to a thick, foamy cap and clings to the sides of the glass. Eventually a nice lace remains, leaving lots of foamy dots of lacing down the glass. Too carbonated and foamy, unfortunately, though it does settle after some time.

SMELL: Roasted malts, smoked malts, and some dark chocolate. Pretty bold with some nice smoked notes there.

TASTE: Roasted and smoky malts, notes of caramel sweetness, and then a smoky and bitter chocolate finish. Bitterness and smoky chocolate flavors linger mildly on the palate. Alright.

PALATE: Thinner body and with lots of carbonation. Light on the palate, and quite fizzy. Goes down alright and finishes slightly sticky. Too ligh and carbonated for the style. Not full, creamy or smooth enough.

OVERALL: After having drunk piles of the homebrewer's Imperial Milk Porter, I can only imagine that this batch didn't turn out nearly as good as the original homebrewed beer did. The palate is just too light and airy, which not only sucks in itself, but takes the foundation out of the flavor as well. Too bad this one doesn't have the big, menacing palate the Milk Porter did. Now that was a beer. Thanks again for everything herrorara. Very enjoyable.

The product of the winner of the Toronto Beer Week's Homebrew contest. Would be quite interesting to see how this compares to the original home brew batch. 500ml bottle into a pint glass, consumed January 10.

Pours a dense black, with some cola colour around the edges but opaque for the most part. Half finger of tan head falls to a collar which lingers, some lace remains. Nose of roasted and smoked malts, some dark chocolate as well. Taste whacks you with some smokiness off the bat, then some more dark chocolate and some moderate coffee-like bitterness; slightest hint of metal. Maybe a hint of some dark fruits in the late finish. Solid, smooth and somewhat silky mouthfeel; full and great drinkability. One of the best beers in this style I've had recently, almost on par with The Landlord's Daughter in Black Satin (from the Granite). A pleasure, and Amsterdam would do well to adopt this recipe in some form.

Bottle from the brewery, thanks Jason. Pours thick black, though not much head, with agreeable smokey aroma. Its thick tasting and woody,a tad of pipe tabacco, though otherwise not very complex. Drinkable though not overly drinkable. Good from Amsterdam.

Pours a dark black with a light creamy coloured head. Has a decent amount of smoke to the flavour with a dark roasted malt finish. Its not to thin or too watery and is extremely sessionable.

I was lucky enough to have a few bottles of the original home brew batch of this beer and I thought it was even better then the Amsterdam version. It was thicker and higher in alcohol percentage too. Thought there was more smoke in the flavour as well.

This was the winning recipe chosen from the Toronto Beer Week homebrew competition. I love smoked porters, so was excited to try it. Pours an opaque brown with thick tan head. Nice lacing down the glass. Smells of chimney smoke, roasted malt and some faint hints of chocolate. Wonderfully balanced flavour, sweetness and bitterness, with a smokey aftertaste. Thick, smooth mouthfeel. I can see why this won the homebrew competition (though I haven't tried any of the others). Possibly my favourite Amsterdam beer I've tried.
