Bottle from Liam

Hazy orange colour, ring of white head with light lace. Smell is full of wine and oak up front, lots of fruit, grape, cherry, mild funk throughout, nice acidic quality as well as a bit of spicy yeast. Taste is fruity with yeast and spice, cherry, green apple, a bit of banana, oak and wine with a drying finish and a touch of alcohol. Medium-high carbonation, fairly full bodied. Solid stuff fairly drinkable, incredible nose on this as well, quite delicious stuff here.

Goedenavond means 'goodnight' but it's got all the light of a bright morning sunshine; although topped by a puffy cloud of white head, this golden-yellow beer practically screams 'Wake Up!' Transparency may be obscured but this ale has the incandescence of an electric bulb filament.

Our funky little critter friends are instantly recognized on the aroma; you can smell the tartness! There's also conspicuous notes of wet hay and runny cheese that are atypical of most beers. The influence of pinot noir barrels is also appreciated in the form of earthy, mint-accented notes of cherry and beetroot as well as the oak itself. It's floral and aromatic.

Although a recent purchase from Amsterdam's newly opened brewpub, this beer was bottled just shy of a year ago. Consider that it was actually brewed seven months before that and it's a bit surprising the beer still has so much energy; bubbles are surprisingly forceful and conclude each sip with an almost stinging exclamation point. It's very quaffable for 9%.

The flavour balances honeyed pale malt flavour with the nuances of the barrel. Unexpected amounts of toasted white bread, mushy apple and pear, and spicy yeast are easily discerned despite the prevalence of tongue-popping tartness and farmhouse-quality 'funk'. The wine really manifests itself on the finish with the tastes of black pepper-accented raspberry and red cherry.

I don't know how many "practice runs" it took Amsterdam's brewmaster to get the hang of the difficult and complex science (art?) of barrel-aging, but every one of the 'Adventure Brews' I've tried so far have been definite successes. Don't miss out on Goedenavond or the others - it's not easy to find offerings like this in these parts and it's even rarer to find such good ones.

650ml bomber courtesy of liamt07 poured into tulip 12/6/13

A hazed peachy liquid with enough clarity to see some bubbles deep in the liquid, two fingers of off white foam has decent retention but leaves just a random patch of lace

S I get plenty of oak barrel but with pear, and apple cider notes with some white grape I'd guess Chard way before Pinot Noir, funk I wasn't expecting not sure if it's intended but it works quite well, floral hops and a little more funk with some spice

T some sugars and a little more funk for ya but without the fruity notes to back it up, there's still some apple cider but its not as enjoyable, earthy notes and sweet grains don't quite live up to the nose

M a few extra bubbles leaves a bit of foam in your mouth, medium bodied with oak and funk on the finish

O I'm getting wine barrel but its so far from Pinot I'm wondering if its a typo on the label, the booze is well hidden and intended or not the funk carries this one, pretty solid at the end of the day

One of those beers where I want to try it newborn, what I had today and another in a few years. I'm also curious if they wanted a funk master when they brewed it, it would be some good luck to have it work out this well otherwise.

Big thanks to Liamt07 for this and the rest of the killer brews in the biggest box that's ever crushed my porch.

Appearance. Pours a hazy yellow gold with a finger of white head that fades pretty quickly.

Smell. Dry woody white wine, some nice belgian yeast, sweet apples and pears, and a little booze.

Taste. Woody wine again, maybe not white though and not as dry as the smell. Some nice Belgian yeast, apples, a little grainy light malt and some booze.

Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, medium-strong carbonation.

Overall. I'm wishing I held on to this for a bit. It's good now but I'm thinking with a little age this will be really nice.

Edit: 0% rDev at the time of this review, I have such average tastebuds...

A Belgian pale that is overwhelmed by sweet wine, with some tannins in the finish. Decently done, although I wouldn't have it again. A tad below average mouthfeel for what it is, a showoff for the wine taste. I would like something less one dimensional for the style.

Belgian Golden Ale Aged in Pinot Noir Barrels for 6 months.
Bottled on Sept 17, 2012.
Poured in to tulip.

A - Cloudy medium orange colour; golden around the edges with a thin layer of white head.

S - A big oak aroma up front with some grape skin, Belgian yeast, clove and bready notes. Lighter apple and apricot in the background.

T - A big oak presence dominates with some yeast esters present. Lighter orchard fruit, grape skin and breadiness in the background. The barrel almost completely drowns out the base beer.

M - Medium body but somewhat watery at times. Moderate carbonation.
