The bottle pops without a hint of a pfssst. The beer pours into my quite still into my 25cl tulip glass and even looks oxidized with some sherry-like brownness to it in its gold depths. The aroma has a soft nuttiness to it that reminds me of Sherry as well as a touch of cardboard. There is a lactic tartness in the nose as well a bit of non-descript fruit character.

The beer feels extremely still and has no noticeable carbonation. It has a nice sourness to it that contributes a nice bit towards the middle and finish of each sip; it tastes like there is just a hint of acetic acid here. There is a definite nutty sherry note here in the finish as well; the oxidation, which was the dominant note in the aroma, is actually not the dominant flavor here (the lactic sourness is more noticeable). I am actually finding myself enjoying the nuttiness that the oxidation adds; there actually isn't much in the way of cardboard in the flavor. There is some fruit character here as well, much of it is influenced by the oxidation though, with notes of raisin or even some brandy-like notes.

This isn't actually all that bad, it certainly doesn't taste like any Lambic I know of, it is even an extreme departure from a straight, unblended, flat Lambic that I have had, much less being anything like the Gueuze that is on the label.

Picked this up off the shelf in Montreal for $7, knew nothing about it at the time but thought it looked possibly interesting.

A- Pours a fairly dark muddy brownish ruby color, pretty much no head forms and carbonation is very minimal, very dark for a traditional gueuze.

S- Fairly fruity with some raspberries, cherries, oak, fairly malty with a bit of a syrupy aspect, and some light mustiness. Doesn't really smell like a traditional gueuze. Overall aroma isn't terrible, has some decent complexity to it, but definitely isn't the most appealing beer I've smelled.

T- Syrupy musty cherry puree, a touch of sweet honey, slightly watery, sweet malts, oak and musty raspberries with just a hint of tartness on the finish. Again some decent complexity, but the sweetness clashes with the mustiness and doesn't really quite taste like anything I've had of the style.

M- Slick, syrupy, completely flat, just completely ruins anything this beer had going for it.

O- I definitely wouldn't say this was the worse beer I've had but definitely is not worth trying even disregarding the $7 price tag. This will make me think twice about randomly picking up anything labeled gueuze that I've never heard of and isn't from Belgium.

No date on bottle. Bought it earlier this year. If it is really retired, I guess it is a bit old.

Beer is a maroonish brown colour. A vigorous pour results in a small white head, dissipates quickly.

Does not smell like a gueuze to me. Quite vinous, with a strong port-like smell. Smells rather sweet, quite like grape juice. There is some musty funk, which is the only hint of the purported style. Smell is strong and not very pleasant.

Taste is somewhat sour. Quite musty with some unpleasant funk. The grape/port flavour is there, and despite the sour funkiness there is a definite sugary sweetness to the beer. Not good and hard to drink.

Light bodied, a bit sticky, low carbonation.

Really not pleasant at all. I will be pouring this one out. Oh well, worth a chance.

Poured into a chalice at slightly above cellar temp.

Appearance: plum red, translucent. Very tiny carbonated head that disappeared instantly.

Smell: like a sweet plum wine. key word: sweet. Some funk detected on the back end of the inhalation (almost urea-like).

Taste: very tart, acidic and sweet. Think of Sour Caps. some bitterness (not hoppy bitterness, but just bitter melon kind of bitterness) on the left side of my tongue. Kind of becomes off-putting as it lingers.

Mouthfeel: not overly hot. teeth-coating acidity plus that metalic bitterness that other

Overall: my wife liked it more than me. not the best gueuze, not the worst. drinkable, but not worth $8/bottle.

12 oz. bottle poured into my Allagash chalice. Thanks to Phyl21ca for this extra.

Appearance - Flat, deep orange body. Vigorous pour in an attempt to get some sort of head at the risk of pouring whatever bizarre sediment had formed around the top of the bottle. Twist off rusted cap on this bottle. It bodes ill of things to come.

Smell - Sweet wine characteristics. Sherry and some oxidation. Wet cardboard and metal. This bottle is definitely past its prime, unless this is what it smelled like originally? Who knows. No hint of funk or any other characteristic of a lambic.

Taste - Well, it is a bit tart. Otherwise the oxidation comes through as do the wine flavors. The finish is all wine, as if it had been aged in chardonnay barrels. Sweet throughout the body and generally unpleasant. Again, nothing like a gueuze.

Mouthfeel - The aftertaste and flatness are really awful. The metallic flavors persist, as do the wine flavors, in a terrible way. Vinous and tannic, dry but sweet. Pretty bad.

Overall - I DP'd this after a few sips. The flavors remain in my mouth far longer than I want them to. Really not a pleasant beverage to drink.

Bottle from Marche Omni/Jovi...whatever it's called. $6.99 seemed steep but I had tried one of their beers before and liked it so I was alright paying that. From notes.

A - Poured a dark copper with very little carbonation. Bright. Film of white head, no lacing, small film of head retention. It's worth noting that something had crystalized on the top of the bottle when I took the crown off. I was worried.

S - Orange, funk, grass, and spoiled apple juice. Smells nothing like a Gueuze from my experience.

T - Vinegar and acidity. Rotten pear or apple juice. Not sour. Horrible finish of sour or spoiled fruits. Kinda tasted how feces smell.

M - Good carbonation and a full body.

O/D - Hands down the worst 'gueuze' I've ever had. I'm not sure how this can be called a gueuze at all. Are they importing Lambic? A sad attempt at a style that deserves much more respect.

Thanks to Ernie for sharing this bizarre brew. Poured into a Weyerbacher tulip.

A: Still orange-amber body. Flat as f*#+!

S: Ummm... this smells like a weak, mediocre barleywine. Toffee and bready malt. Slight sherry-like oxidation. Weird.

T: Strange blend of lactic acidity and malt sweetness. Kinda gross.

M: Medium body with nice, full carbonation. Definitely this beer's strong suit.

D: Just strange.

Notes: Upon first smelling this beer I was convinced the label was just wrong, and that there was no way this could ever have been considered a Gueuze by anyone. After tasting it, I can at least appreciate that it has some acidity. But that doesn't make something a Gueuze. This was miles off from its style, and frankly unpleasant to drink regardless of any stylistic considerations. Bad beer, and one I'm thrilled I got to try.

Cheers!

I did not know what to expect as I did read some reviews before trying this and expected the worst.

A - Brown and still with barely no head even after an aggressive pour.

S - Mostly wet cardboard, metal and Manischewitz wine! If you are unfamiliar with Manischewitz, it is a very sweet, cheap and awful Kosher wine.

T - Not nearly as bad I thought it would be! A bit of sour and balanced with a nice nutty wood flavoring. A bit artificial but still I find myself wanting to drink more, at least it's interesting!

M - A lot heavier on the tongue than I expected. Pretty full bodied, which was nice but not what you expect of the style.

D - Funny enough I COULD drink more, but I would not bother as it is just not a good enough beer for me to ever have another. Still, a clean aftertaste with a slight mouth sweat which I liked, but not enough to rate this beer as anything but a Mess that ended up not being Awful.

6.99 for this 341ml bottle. Let's see if it was worth it.

First un-flavoured geuze since becoming a BA. Hope I like this.

A-Light brown liquid with no head. Only a thin ring and a tiny patch in the center. A bit like homestyle apple juice.

S-Smells just like porto. A bit of tomato juice. Rancid malt. Don't really enjoy this smell but might grow on me.

T-Woah. Was not expecting this. Starts off sour which is different. Follows the smell. Wet wood. Really hard to taste the high alcohol content. Kind of gross yet you kind of want to drink more. Tastes cheap. Does not feel like a quality brew. Taste like a failed homebrew or cider you still drink just to get drunk.

M- Almost no carbonation. Same mouthfeel as a cheap juice.

D- Do not want. Pretty dirty.

It was okay to drink since I wanted to finish it but this is not a good introduction to this style. Adding the yeast from the bottom is a good idea as it gives it a bit more body and taste.

Now I really want to read other reviews to see if this beer is as weird and dirty as I think it is or do I just need more time with the gueuze style.

Bottle - Poured a yellow hazy colored brew with almost no carbonation or head. You can detect some sourness through the aroma. Taste is partially sweet (lemon, orange?) with some acidic note. The sourness is missing as well as the usual tart associated with gueuze. Overall, this one is too expensive for the result but I still welcome the fact that this brewer was up for the challenge of brewing something different.

Bottle shared by Derek. Orangey colour with some harvesting of a bubby white partial cover. The aroma is geuzy and interesting, not quite sour nor malty. A little lace. The taste is sour, but there is balance with the malt. Well cellared and so the Day of Balance by Derek?

I picked this up in March '07, so it's cellared for at least 1.5 yrs.

It's sort of a cross between a Gueuze & a Bier-de-garde.

A: Clear copper bronze, off white head, no retention, some initial leg/lace.

S: Sour Apple. No depth, but it's alright.

T: Cider, biscuity malt, subtle alcohol, slight hints of vinegar.

M: Light to moderate body & carbonation. Hard to believe it's 8%. Smooth with a slight tartness.

D: It's alright.

I honestly can't remember where I got this weird beer. Pours sort of a muddy light brown with absolutely no head or evidence of carbonation. Aroma is faintly sour, like granny smith apple, and a little bit grassy. Some other 'stinky' notes in there as well. The flavour is sour, although not overpoweringly so, with some unrecognizable fruit elements and a decent amount of counterbalancing sweetness. Nothing too 'off' here, even though it's been sitting around a while, although that indescribable garbage (maybe it's wet paper?) note comes back as it warms. Probably just an old bottle that's been oxidized? Mouthfeel is smooth and juice-like (no carbonation, really). Drinkability is low simply because this beer is... well... weird.

341 ml bottle. I don't know exactly how long Dépanneur de la Rive aged this, but the inside of the cap was starting to show signs of rust.

A- Very cloudy, orange with light brown. I like the colour and look, seems to fit with the overall character of the beer. Not much head.

S- Fruity apple aromas up front. This is followed by a nutty, cheesy smell. Appetising in a ripened cheese, aged wine kind of way.

T- Strong sour (acid) fruit flavour. Apple predominant. Alcohol very well hidden. Pleasant, but unlike anything I've had, and hard to place in the spectrum of beverages. Nut and ceese flavours behind the fruit, but not as pronounced as in smell. There is some resemblance to cider because of the predominant apple.

MF- Refreshing and thirst quenching. Acidic with a touch of astringency. Not the best aspect of the beer, but matches well with the rest.

D- Couldn't drink much of this at a time, but I enjoyed the experience and interesting flavours and aromas.

Thanks Harry!
Pours completely flat - even off a hard pour. An unappealing, polluted appearence. Clouded, murky orange in colour. A vinegary, off fruit (pear, apple) smell, trace alcohol - a generally odd and misplaced aroma. Like a twisted white wine. A puckering mouthfeel, not so much from sourness as from general distaste. What a kick! Flavours are far off the mark. Odd rotting flavours. Not much sourness, nor tartness. Some complexity, but complexity of weird blends. A weird gueze that can't even be described... who knows what it tastes like. Generally eccentric.

The bottle claims it's been fermenting 2 and a half years. Perhaps. Too off putting to tell. The brewers also claims this a blend between cider, wine, and beer. I'm not sure that's what a beer should be - but this seems to be. Like so many other Quebec beers, I'm happy to see an attempt, but this is way off the mark. Not reccomended unless for a weird experience...

A nice orangish beer with great carbonisation and a nice medium head. A color between beer and juice.

Smell is very fruity, and you can smell the sourness emitted from this beer! Some shy smell of apple, ananas.

The taste gets me bad, actually, dont know if we can call it a gueuze or not.
She is sour, bitter, with a big aftertaste of hoppish notes, the fruity notes are very present and it brings me memories of turned bad sparkling wine.

I really disliked this beer, when my cousin from Northern France who likes the gueuze style said he liked!
