Back with a 2006 edition, (and allegedly less alchohol) Schoune brings us another Gueuze to try. I Bought a couple of these on a recent Quebec trip. I figured if it was good I'd enjoy it, and if it was bad, I'd finally know what a bad or mediocre gueuze is like.

A: Pours a straw cloudy color with no head or lacing of any kind. Quite still as well. No bubbles seen climbing out of my Tripel Karmeliet tulip.

S: My relieved first thought was "well, it smells like a gueuze!". Quite par for the course, but definitely appealing, and became more so as the beer warmed up.

T: As the beer warms this keeps getting better and better. It does however have a quite juicy and sweet middle. Lots of honey and apple. Quite funkified finish. Not too sour but certainly sour enough to please the gueuze heads out there.

M: This does have a sort of sweetness you probably wouldn't find in a Belgian gueuze, Its almost like a Faro... However the finish is adequately tart. Carbonation is a little on the low side.

Overall I'm pleased with this bottle of beer, the only gueuze made in Quebec and (I might be wrong) the only one in Canada! I didn't get the chance to try the 2005, but based on the mixed reviews, it seems like Schoune has done a better job with this one, I hope they continue to brew it as I will continue to buy it. How about some Ontario Distribution?

My bottle, from a past Quebec trip. Big cider geuze wafting aroma. Peachy look with lace. Sharp cider cahracteristic, finishing with sugar. No off flavour. Its somewhat Like a cyser, and at this level of ageing, understated carbonation. Better than expected with good drinkability.

Bottle shared by Sammy, 750ml into a tulip.

Orangey yellow, slightly unfiltered with no head or lacing. Nose has light lemon notes, tennis balls and a sharp acidity. Taste has harsh acetic notes, some peach and lemony fruit notes. Not too much funk, but rather straight sourness. A bit of sweetness comes in mid-late palate to mildly offset the acidic and cidery notes. Medium feel, low carbonation and medium high acidity, which becomes less prominent as I moved through the glass. Decent, but not all that memorable in terms of a gueuze.

From notes

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/orange color to it. It has a nice white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves very little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of tart green apples, citrus, and some Brett funks.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some sour apples upfront, tart lemon, some peaches and Brett funks.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

Veiled golden color with moderate activity. Slightly creamy bubbly white 2 finger head, lasting around 10-15 minutes, with gentle legs. Smell of apple cider, green grapes, and tart. Taste of apples, cranberries, peach, jolly ranchers candies, and wild yeast. Soft cheese and oak feel with dry sour fruits. Slick smooth medium body with super crisp zesty carbonation. Very strong finish, quite funky and very sour, highly vinous, alcoholic, but very warming. So there is no freshness here. The tongue coat is quickly gone, mostly attacking the back of the tongue. Harsh at first, but it quickly becomes an interesting experience as a good appetizer. Feels like malt and fruit wine. As my first Gueuze, I can't really compare, though I think this is a very good quality craft, considering the style and for a 6 year old bottle. The sour queen wife approves this message.
