Bottle shared at August THT. Very dark brown pour with no head. Notes of roasted malts, chocolate, smoke, molasses, sugar. Medium body, low carbonation.

16oz glass at Beer Revolution Oliver Square Edmonton. Apparently only available on tap around here. Mushrooms, you say?

This beer appears a solid, abyssal black, with the barest of basal orange-brick edges, and one skinny-ass finger of wispy and not long for this world head, which leaves pretty much nil in terms of lace anywhere near the glass as things slowly progress.

It smells of roasted bready caramel malt, black licorice, bittersweet chocolate, cafe-au-lait, a dank earthiness that I'm not ready to yet admit is fungus-borne, and gentle leafy, citrusy, and perfumed floral hop bitters. The taste is big medium-dark cocoa, semi-sweet caramel/toffee malt, a touch of free-range char, day-old coffee, spoiled cream, a fading anise spiciness, still indistinct earthen tones, and a now tame weedy and leafy green hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly weak in its asleep at the wheel frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, with a sort of tattered creaminess trying vainly to get off of the ground. It finishes well off-dry, the cocoa, caramel, cream, and softly boozed-up coffee really the lingering story.

Yeah, I had a schwack of mushrooms in the kick-ass risotto that I made earlier this evening for myself and my little dude, so I can say with utter confidence that there is a slim to none chance that any of the purported 'chaga' character came through in this offering. Otherwise, this ain't a bad strong stout, but I'm judging it partially on intent, just so y'all know.

500ml with a bottled on date of 9-9-15. A stout brewed with Chaga mushrooms, like wha? Beer, man.

A - Pour to a large snifter is black, a small brown head forms. A ring and some lace dots remain at the end.

S - Plenty of stout here: chocolate liqueur, pretty decent charred roast kick, bit of licorice and some booze, kind of a chicory spice thing going on. Some earthy tones perhaps, but can't say I get mushrooms.

T - Yeah really no mushrooms showing up here, which is kind of a disappointment, but this is quite a tasty stout nonetheless so maybe it's for the best. Really nice char+roast dominating with solid chocolate, caramel and licorice complementing. Still a little peppery kick and perhaps some herbal hop coming through. Smoother and more potent than the scent.

M - Smooth, full-bodied, light-but-ample carbonation. Kinda bitter, pretty nice balance of roast and rich malt, though the roast has the upper hand. A touch of alcohol heat but not a bother, pretty staple for the style+ABV.

O - Was kind of excited/wary to see mushrooms come out in a stout, sadly/fortunately they're really nowhere to be found here. But what we do have is a pretty damn nice 8% stout with decent complexity and a stellar smoothness. Definitely reminiscent of other Nogne stouts which is certainly a good thing. Woulda been cool to see those mushrooms come into play, though.
