The beer pours a translucent brown color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is awesome! Wow, what a great hop nose. It has a tremendous citrus character that's complimented with a light caramel malt aroma. The taste is great as well! The aroma really translated to the taste. It's a hop bomb for sure with mostly pale malts and a hint of caramel/chocolate for complexity. There is a bit of yeast fruitiness that mixes well with the hops. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a terrific barleywine. It's highly drinkable and has a lovely hop character. Recommended.

It's time for round two of the Third Unorganized Invitational, also known as TUI. Nøgne Ø #100 steps up here after a night with Southern Tier's Oat. On to the beer:

Poured into a tulip, the head is hree fingers thick on top. And the body...it's charcoal black...wasn't expecting that. Not even light can penetrate through the body. So far, that head is staying up. On to the aroma I go...there's certainly a dose of hops here. Concentrated hop juice is the first sign. Carmelized sugar and fruit punch sit in the back. The aroma's intenisty really dies off after popping the bottle cap.

The first sip is warming and thick. My soul is heating up already, and I've only taken one sip of my beer. Is this spiced? Spruce and pine notes in the begining make me think so. A squirt of citrus juice liven things up. Very riseny. The alcohol is hidden for the most part, but it really shows itself as it goes down your throat and into your body. Very resiny with wood lingers on in the aftertate.

Hmmm, now I see why Nøgne Ø revived this beer. You'll be sipping this beer, but you'll be coming back for more.

The second round of TUI is coming to a close. I'll have another treat tomorrow night when this resumes.

Thanks to my brother for bringing this one to me from Louisiana.

The beer pours a murky medium-brown color with a large, cream-colored head. the aroma is licorice with some nutmeg and malt. The flavor is caramel malt along with piney and grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

This was an older bottle so the hops probably faded a bit, but it was still enjoyable.

Purchased at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta. Certainly not retired, and billed as a barley wine on the bottle. On the other hand, doesn't particularly look like a Barley wine or a dipa. Pours black with a white head that sticks around a bit and leaves some lacing. The smell is roasty, chocolatey, and winey. The taste is bitter with citrus up front, then comes chocolate. A big hit of pine throughout- or maybe that is Juniper? The mouthfeel is big, rich, and creamy. Quite drinkablconsidering the abv, but definitely a sipper.

13oz's in a tulip glass at Capone's.

A- Dark brownish with some plum red spots, very dark for a DIPA/Barleywine? Alot of activity in the glass made for a pillow of a medium dark tan fluff that had some of that sticky stuff, lines going down the sides.

S- This ale smells like a small barleywine mixed with some Belgian dark. The hops don't come off like a American Barleywine at all, some of the 3-C's but nothing exploding. Citrus and a few malt varieties and some yeast making for a semi fruity nose and a even less hoppy one.

T- Citrus up front with grapefruit and other minor tropic fruits. In the middle the hops fade off making way for a semi spicy middle with a touch of fresh wheat mixed in for a yeasty finish. There is a taste of alcohol in this 9-10%er. Does not taste like a DIPA, more like a very old (aged) American Barleywine.

M,D- More malty than hoppy, there is not enough bitterness to classify this as American B-Wine territory. Just a mention of bitterness on the tounge while the wheat and malts work the mouth. The body is above medium with a smooth mellow carbonation that is not all that crisp. I had 13oz of this and while I liked it, I was over this before those 13oz were finished. I guess this is really a mix of a DIPA/B-Wine, an odd mix, that get's the job done I guess.

On tap at Capone's the other day.,

The beer pours an amber brown color with good retention and lacing. Alas, this was to be as good as things get. The nose is fairly malty, but a bit light. However, there is some noticeable brown sugar and a hint of citrus, but otherwise I don't get a lot to the aroma profile. The flavor profile replicates the nose, and tastged side by side with Deaue, double crooked tree and blue dot, this is almost a joke. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth, but there just isn't enough flavor to be very impressive. Also, this beer has some noticeable heat and alcohol, which detracts from the beer's drinkability just a bit.

Nothing wrong with this beer, but can't say it's anything that would make me want to try this beer again either.

This deep pecan-coloured brew doesn't afford much glitz or glamour but does reveal perfect clarity when held into the light. It also offers an impressive amount of head for a beer that's alcohol content hits double-digits. That off-white lather refuses to diminish even as the liquid beneath it does; much of it finds its way to the sides of the glass.

Its hops are almost villain-like they make so bitter the otherwise sweet, butter/raisin/pecan tart-like bouquet. Earthy, herbal resins seethe from the aroma like sap from a tree (an appropriate simile considering the scent of pine needles and spruce bark). A great, billowing note of purple plum conjures a thought of summer ripeness in an aroma that largely smells of fall-time decay.

The flavour is laced with sweet notes of fig, date, dark honey and molasses and is accented by a leafy peppermint and ginger spice. Lesser notes of grapefruit rind and caramel are noted too. It offers a great tension between the dark, sticky-sweet flavours and brighter, more citrusy ones. That said, the beer leans heavily on the leafy, resiny (i.e., pine, grass, peppermint) qualities. Good composure.

Reportedly, this beer's creators had conceived this recipe for a DIPA, but it was accidentally labeled a barleywine. Whatever. Barleywine. Double IPA. Tomato. Tomatoe. Let's not call the whole thing off. This disappears far too quick for a beer of its strength, a testimony to the fact that it's irresistibly quaffable. Despite some apparent strength, the beer is chewy enough to be a cookie. This is not by necessity a slow drinker.

Criminal law penalizes conspiracy as a separate crime because it acknowledges that the whole can be bigger than the sum of its parts; multiple actors achieve greater results working in concert than when they each act alone. Indeed, that is the case with Nogne #100, where sugary, nectar-sweet malts collude with herbal, piny hops to scheme a beer as satiating as it is quenching. Teamwork at its finest.

Pours a brownish body with quick dying head and minor lace patches. Aroma is malt strong as I pick up yeast/bread, light chocolate, caramel, touch of roasted malts and a medicinal hoppy aroma. Light to medium-bodied, smooth, the matls are prevelant as there is a dry, yeasty, almost woody edge with chocolate malt sweetness. All balanced with crisp, citric hops that pucker the tongue and give off a dry finish (that is also complemented by a cameo from the alochol to warm you up). Easy to drink, relaxing, and a well-balanced brew that is one of the best I've had in a while.

A reasonably vigorous pour produces a four-finger thick, darkish tinged, tan colored head in my Tripel Karmeliet tulip. The beer is a deeply concentrated, burnt amber color that just shows a deep, clear, concentrated ruby hue if held up to the light. This smells of sticky hop character even as I am pouring this beer. A closer inspection confirms this with notes of candied citrus peel, sweetened berry notes, sweet pine sap, orange blossom honey, a soft herbal reek that can lean towards garlic chive at times as well as a touch of menthol aromatics. As is typical with my experience of the new breed, hoppy northern European beers there is still a substantial malt backbone here that contributes a deep toasty grain character, and nice whole grain bread aromatics.

Hoppy from the first taste, this has a bracing bitterness that becomes more astringent and aggressive through to the lingering, bitingly hoppy finish. Lingering herbal notes, menthol, concentrated pine sap, bright bergamot, ruby-red grapefruit, tangerine, ample lychee form the biggest part of the flavor profile, but supporting hop-derived notes of light cured leather, some tobacco flavors, garlic chives and milkweed are also noticeable at a much more subtle level. The malt contributes lots of chewy, viscous body to this brew as well as some light toasted-almost-roasted touches in the finish, hop supporting caramel character, and some malty crushed cracker flavors in the middle that get drowned out by the caramelized malt sweetness by the finish. As the beer warms up in my glass it smoothes out just a bit with some of the harsher hop notes and the bitterness becoming a bit softer and a touch more integrated.

Definitely on the thick side of a double IPA, indeed more in line on this front with a Barley wine, but it certainly plays the hop card in spades as this is clearly the dominant character, even despite the interesting malt depth. This is one of those beers that really needs to warm up (even though it only started at 50°F / 10°C, it was still a bit too cool) and perhaps even breath a bit in order to lose a bit of the sharp, astringent hop edge. This really is just insanely hopped, though I find it quite enjoyable. I definitely am enjoying the depth the mares otter malt adds and even the slight roasted note from the chocolate malt is a nice addition.

Inflatablechair brought over this gem tonight... funny, I took this off my trading wants in the last couple weeks because I just never got any bites for it and it was not really high on my list of priorities... but tonight, Sammy decides to pull it from his cellar... karmic, prophetic and wonderful. Thanks buddy..

Into my Old Guardian goblet... 1/2" lite tan head.. okay retention atop a deep walnut brew that is pretty clear.

Nose shows big caramel with a surprising amount of citrus hops for a brew that is at least a year old... nice dark fruit presence makes me think figs and dark raisins.

Flavor is a rich mash-up of dark fruits, toffee, and hints of roasted malts... a little cocoa comes in with some brown sugar sweetness.. again some pronounced CCC hoppiness lets you know that the Norwegians were swimming for American shores... with warmth a little dark cherry essence mixes with the figs and other fruits.. but the hops are actually the big finisher.

Great body is a bigger medium... carbonation is nice but a tad big bubbled... honestly a bit too rich for more than a nice glass... glad I had a good friend to share this one with.

I really liked this one... it immediately reminds me of the older vintages of Old Boardhead...

500ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for 6.75$

Appearance - Slightly hazy brown colour with a small size fizzy beige coloured head. I can't make out the level of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, grapefruit

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel and malts mixed with hops. There is also some notes of chocolate and dark fruits. It ends with a sweet malty aftertaste with a hop bitterness and some heat from the booze.

Overall – Lots of different flavours going on and I can feel the booze almost instantly. This is a really good barley wine that I hope gets even better with age. I tucked a few bottles away to see how it develops.

A: Deep dark chestnut with a 2” tan fluffy foam collar that grips the side of the glass, producing heavy lace.
S: Rich malt, fruit, dark dried fruit.
T: Big malt flavors light caramel sweetness leads to an alcohol aftertaste balancing between the big malt, big hops and alcohol. The malt suggests a malt shiskey character. Traces of chocolate and citrus. Light drying on the finish and a slight astringency from the hops.
F: Very full bodied yet creamy texture with slightly below average carbonation.
O: The big alcohol, malt and hops combine to give this beer a delightful mixed drink quality.

Pint sized bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours such a dark brown color, it is almost black with blood red highlights. Produced a nice cap of tan froth. Good retention and lace.

(S)- A nice resiny dry leather profile. Bits of spice and a malty backbone of toasted caramel.

(T)- Quite a nice combo of mildly toasty caramel malt, subtle dark fruits, and a leathery resin-like hop character.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. A seamless and well integrated beer that showcases the heavy malt, hop profile, and high ABV without it being overbearing or too rich. In fact, this is quite smooth with only a dry finish to remind you of the 10%ABV.

(D)- Quite the solid barleywine here. Nogne has really been hit or miss with me with what I have tried from them thus far, but this one is a successful one. Great on this bitter/chilly night.

Pours a five finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Totally black color. Medium carbonation and very heavy bodied. Sweet malty nose. Label lists this as barleywine but its more like an IPA. Flavor is strong hops with caramel, smooth yet bitter almost cough syrup with lingering bitterness. High ABV completely hidden. Good but not what I was expecting. $7.95 for a 500ml bottle from John's Marketplace Portland, OR.

A: Poured a dark, opaque caramel/cola with a creamy moderate beige head that left a good lacing.

S: a sweet roasted malt character, fresh pine, and some citrus.

T: warm and biscuity, with some dried citrus and soft roasted malt notes. There were some light whiskey cask notes sneaking through in the background as well as some dark chocolate, pine, and light sweet molasses. Some dry pine, dark roasted malt provide a nice closing before fading quickly and clean. The flavor is extraoridinary smooth, earthy and well balanced from start to finish.

M: silky and smooth with a soft palate and some dry bittering Columbus hops coming through similar to an Anderson valleys hop ottin but more tame.

D: The flavor was very refined, and soft making for an incredible drinkability factor. Quite possibly the smoothest and most refined barleywine style ive ever had. An incredible recommend.

500ml bottle poured into tulip 9/4/13

A dark brownish amber with enough clarity to see a 1/3 of the distance to the other side under the foam, looks thick with some bubbles struggling to stream up the side of the glass. Some random chunks floating around and a very long lasting light brown head leaves plenty of random unorganized lace deep down the glass

S piney citrus rind and a heavy blast of caramel, herbal hops and faint coco powder mix with some faint booze and dark bread

T a slight nutty aspect seems out of place but works, more malty sweetness mixing up with some piney rind, old DIPA or a young BW you tell me,some faint milk chocolate s it wrms

M thick and syrupy with low carbonation but enough for it to work, sticky on the lips with a bitter kick, rind, burnt brown sugar and pine resin lingers long on the finish

O some dark malt notes add a strange mix to this brew, to me it seems lost between styles or perhaps I caught it at an awkward age, either way I like it a lot but would rather have it super fresh or in a couple years

pretty solid brew with a well hidden 10% waiting to kick your ass, still pretty hoppy for a BW and the malt has some dark notes that I don't think works against it but leaves something unique in your glass. Not only am I going to grab one for long term aging I'm going to look for a fresh batch out of hopped up curiosity

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a brown color and a thick, muddy consistency. Some floaties. There was a half inch of creamy, long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: Smelled of hops, malt, and a little caramel.

T: Tasted of chocolate malt, caramel, hops, and some yeast. A nicely balanced flavor that gets better as it goes along.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a mostly dry finish. Medium-bodied.

D: A very well made barleywine. Drinkable.

Pours dark. Very dark, in fact. This is certainly one of the darkest barleywines I've ever had. Head is fine and soft, a pale light cream colour. Lace forms in solid sheets down the edge of the glass. Body is heavy. Looks pretty good.

Spicy nose, a little exotic and alluring, with a lemony sweetness like a sherbet lemon candy. Underneath it are some sweet dark tones and a hint of ash. An interesting nose.

Taste is great. Dark but smooth, and with a lively hoppiness. Citric, but sweet, and always caressed by the deep and full body. On the back some dark roasted bitterness comes through which is a lovely complement to the other flavours. Feel is quite light, but undercarbonated, which keeps it smooth.

Lovely drop. It's deep and heavy, but really surprisingly drinkable.
