Vintage unknown but I bought this off the shelf in PA and stored it for at least a year or 2 prior to recently opening it. 500ml bottle into a tulip, the brew appears black in color with rich khaki head.

This smells of raisons, minerals, earth and meaty with light roast and some citrus hops still evident. It tastes bitter with herbal hops somewhat roasty andvearthy into the aftertaste.

This is medium in body with modest carbonation. I bet this was a beast of a hoppy beer while fresh. For my own tastes I wish I would have waited a bit longer to pop it.

No Freshness date to be found. Served at cellar temps in a tulip glass.

Appearance: poured dark brown and almost black with a nice and creamy tan head. Hints of red poke through the glass. No sediment can be detected. Fair amount of alcohol legs on the glass. Head retention is great.

Nose: leather, tobacco, oxidation of the malts and alcohols, port and sherry wine, some fruityness but it's a stretch. No alcohol presence at all.

Taste: nice medium to high carbonation, leather, oxidation, pipe tobacco, little sweetness left in there from all of the aging. No fruit character at all. Nice aged barleywine taste. No off flavors like cardboard or wet paper; just a clean and well aged barleywine. Can not taste the alcohol.

Overall: you never know what you're going to get when you buy a beer with no freshness date from the clearance section. I scored on this one. All of the hop character that may have been in there is all but gone now and we are just left with a deliciously oxidized glass of wonderfulness. I have another bottle of this and I think it is prime for drinking now. Wish I knew how old this was so I know what kind of aging legs to expect in the future.

Murky orange color with beige head. Aroma is really hoppy and also has some dried fruits. Taste starts also hoppy with some sweet, toasted malts in the background. Really balanced between the sweet malts and bitter hops. Body is medium and has a good amount of carbonation. Really nice one overall, double IPA meets barleywine.
