Cloudy, no head, relatively few bubbles. Buttery, biscuity aroma with some earthiness and farmyard notes. Grain flavours with some yeastiness. Low to medium carbonation, with fine bubbles and very slight fizz on the tongue. Not much bitterness at first, more later. A few fruity notes comes through with further sips. A flavour reminiscent of pate coming through with later bitterness. Fairly smooth to drink. Tastes less than its percentage. An enjoyable, somewhat rustic ale but relatively light in terms of flavour.

L: Pours straw gold with a slight copper tint under a 1” white clingy foam collar.
S: Light fruit in the aroma but not as much as other saisons.
T: Drinks fairly dry and clean with light malt and light fruit flavors.
F: Medium light body, medium high carbonation.
O: This is a very drinkable beer without any obvious flaws but it is not very bold.

500 ml bottle served cold into glassware. Purchased for just under $5 CDN.

Appearance hazy pale golden color. Explosive from the bottle and pours a two finger white head with impressive retention.

Smell - major amount of Apple and pear and peach in this fruity concoction. Some mild yeastiness and a floral backing. Some sugary goodness but most of all fruit.

Taste - fruit with a mixture of pear, peach and apple some backing candied sugar and a does of powdery yeast. Well made and flavors complement each other nicely. Maybe if anything, it's a bit too sweet.

Mouthfeel - smooth, well carbonated but not over carbonated. Dry finish and moderate body throughout.

Overall - well crafted and delicious saison. Better exist, bit this will hold up to virtually all competition. Yummy.

500ml bottle - no idea what the serving temperature is - between freezing and warm, I guess.

This beer pours a cloudy, medium tarnished golden straw colour, with two fingers of weakly puffy, densely foamy, and almost caked dirty white head, which leaves some random splattered rock formation lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of gritty wheat grain, edgy yeast, black pepper and coriander spice, stunted apple and pit fruit, and floral, leafy hops. The taste is much sweeter, but still crackery wheat malt, with a reduced acrid and faintly funky yeastiness, pumped-up clove/coriander and white pepper spice, muddled light orchard fruit, and grassy, weedy hops.

The bubbles are quite light in their frothy effervescence, the body a sturdy medium weight for the style, and a bit tacky (look no further than all that nefarious yeast) in its wan attempt at smoothness. It finishes mostly dry, the yeast, grainy malt, spice, and non-interfering fruit straining in that direction.

A pleasant saison, the extra bit of ABV well integrated, and barely noticeable for the most part. Well rounded, the various Flemish-influenced players all game and good to go, rendering this a worthy sipper (or glugger, depending on your persuasion or intent) for all summer patios anon.

A - Unfiltered yellow with medium white head that dissipates very slowly

S - Citrus hop, spice, blue cheese, honey

T - Citrus, pine, spice sour at the end

M - Small amount of carbonation, great smooth beer. Had with fish cakes and went very well with them.

Pours hazy shiny golden, one finger fluffy white head with great retention, leaving some small traces.
Smell of oatmeal, barnyard (a bit different than the usual saison; manure?), spices (pepper), banana, apple, some cooked corn, low citrus.
Taste starts with a nice cooked grainy feel, a very strong cereal feel, trampled on afterwards by green hay, Brett funkiness, spicy grass, pinch of dry petals, floorboard, a faint lactic bacteria sourness also. There are some nice fruity esters too, with acidic apple, banana and some apricot, but hidden a bit, along with some faint caramel. Finish is rather dry and bitter, leaving grass, hay, funky grains in the aftertaste.
Quite fizzy, a bit heavy also.
The funk in this one was a bit too aggressive, tho it created a very nice "rural" taste. It depends on how much authenticity one expects in his saison. I liked it, but i'm not sure i'd look for it again.

Purchased at the LCBO for appox. $4.65 for a 500ml bottler. Served at 8deg C in a draught glass.

A- Ok. Pours ok with a minimal head. Dissipates to nothing in seconds.

S- Ok. Bit of coriander. Some yeast

T- Ok. Nothing special. Not very sour at all.

M- Guess the creaminess keeps this one alive

O- Will not buy again. Another bomb really

This not very good Saison does well with... Snails and linguine in butter

Enjoy

Pours a very light gold with a minimal white head. Slight aroma of malt, grains and fruit. Those flavors carry over to the taste. Just a touch of funk, and a bit of peat comes through as it warms. Light and crisp mouth. A very drinkable saison. It's a nice change from a lot of the American farmhouse ales.

Appearance is a very murky light orange colored beer with white head and sticky lace retention ; small dotted pattern left on the glass. Smells of grass, citrus, peaches, white grape juice, decent smell. Taste is grassy, juicy nectarine, bitey, very danky, hops and bready finish; dry. Overall, this brewery still ranks amongts my favs in the World, the Saison is unique, and probably better on hot summer days, rather than cool nites or stormy winters. Would like to see is one paired with Oysters/Lobster/seafood, or a stone fruit desserts. Humbolt Fog..black or white truffles.

Pretty unremarkable, subdued beer.

Looks good, though. Soft, hazy honey gold, long-lived creamy head that settles to a solid cap and leaves lots of lace. Quite attractive.

Grassy hops dominate the aroma and flavour, noticeable malt backbone. Grains and fruit, a hint of alcohol. Overall very soft and quiet. Gently drying bitter finish. Soft almost watery mouth feel. Comes across almost like a wheat beer.

Drinkable, but not too exciting. Very soft.

500 ml bottle into large wine.

A nice apricot orange colour. No head at all! A circle of fine bubbles around the glass does not account as a head. There is a sparking lacking but not much retention.

A mild aroma. Fruity and grainy.

A mild malt taste with some fruitiness. Noble hops bitterness in the second half of the taste experience.

A medium feel but slightly watery and no carbonation.

Definitely a below average saison. I do not need to try this one again.

Pours a cloudy blonde gold, with a soft creamy cap of white head. Moderately hazy without any visible carbonation. Decent retention and lacing. 3.75

S – smell has a crisp wheat yeasty character. Aromatic lemon, florals, quite fresh, some light white pepper or soft cinnamon spice. Earthy clove and a fieldy aspect to the yeast. 4

T – is light and soft the delving into a full crisp lemony yeast body. Light sweetness with a citrus twist, creamy yeastiness that becomes increasingly dry toward the end. Lots of lemon, woody pepper, pear, hay and a subtle farmy yeast aspect, but this is quite restrained, a prominent but soft yeast brings subtle spice notes over a creamy wheat-body. A full bracing dry finish. A little mild maybe but the balance is there for sure and it works pretty well. 3.75

M – light initially, then a full mouth creamy yeastiness, a bit of a prickle on the finish, with a mild soft carbonation on the palate, a bit lacking, refreshing and very sessionable, alcohol is not noticeable besides an additional light spice. 3.75

A smooth saison that delivers pretty good yeasty spice with a well balanced body. Not overly farmy or wild in yeast character, but the balance is pretty good and it delivers some citrus zestiness with an assertive yeast character. Could see this pairing quite well with lighter food dishes with the nice full crispness. Another quality one from nogne. 4

(3.75) A: Hazy copper with a thin head that quickly recedes to a bubbly ring. Retention leaves soft rings down the glass.

(3.75) S: Grasses, cloves, lemon zest, banana, apricot, and cracker-like grain undertone. A fresh and pleasantly fruity aroma but not as potent and bold as I would prefer.

(3.75) T: As per the aroma, with nice citrus and tropical elements coupled with a dry cracker taste. This isn’t the driest saison with a more full bodied profile that’s also a tad sweet. Enjoying the mix of spices in this.

(4.0) M: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Semi-dry with a fairly slick texture. Well rounded.

(3.75) D: This is a nice saison, however, I personally prefer less of a grain focus and more dryness in my saisons. Still worthy of a taste.

Nøgne Saison has the colour of an orange peel but the complexion of an amulet. I don't know whether I want to drink it or put it behind a display case. Its vivid tone is especially appreciated against a bright afternoon sun which serves to illuminate its almost atomic-sized bubbles. Its head is hardly bigger and almost all but disappears before the half-way point.

The aroma is an even concoction of yeast and biscuity, bready malt. It smells a little like a bakery. There are also fruity notes vaguely reminiscent of pear and apricot, the appreciation of which is congested by a slightly bitter-smelling earthiness. Some floral qualities are noted too.

Short men can still cast big shadows - while yeast is by far the smallest proportion of this recipe it is also arguably the most conspicuous. While the hops and malt each contribute their own brand of grassy and grainy flavour, it's likely the yeast who's behind the grains of paradise spice, the flower petal incense, orchard fruit, and at least some of the oven-fresh bread loaf.

Nøgne Saison has less energy than one expects from a Saison; the wheels of carbonation could use a little grease (as evidenced from the total lack of head). A lot of the spice and acidity falls flat on the palate, as opposed to with the colourful effervescence they should. It's still a pleasant drink, especially as a thirst-quenching aperitif.

If mention of a beer can conjure up a season, then Saison should conjure up the nicest, warmest, sunniest of spring and summer afternoons. Nøgne Saison doesn't quite have the gumption to evoke that imagery but it sure does pair well with it. It is not this brewery's best offering but definitely does live up to their usual standard of quality.

Botled Feb 27, 2013.

Beer is hazy golden with a smallish white head that fades steadily.

Nose contains yeast, peppery spices and lemon.

Yeast and spices dominate the taste as well, pepper and coriander seem present. Lemon again. Fairly dry. Not bad but lacks the depth or sheer quality of the great saisons.

Medium bodied, highly carbonated, feels a bit irritating.

Overall, a decent saison but not great.

Poured at cellar temperature into a pint glass. A two finger fine white head on a clear gold. Hazy if you swirl it. Good head retention and lots of lacing.

Faint malt smells with some sour overtones. Some fruit and pepper. First taste is fruity with a slight sour afterbite. Mild but very smooth.

Smooth mouthfeel. Mildly carbonated. True to the style. Understated but well balanced.

500ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $6

Appearance - Slightly hazy golden yellow colour with a large size frothy white coloured head. There is a very high amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes.

Smell - Breads/grains, clove/coriander, lemons

Taste & Mouth - There is a high amount of carbonation and I can taste breads/grains mixed with some lemon and some clove/coriander. There is also some honey and a floral/perfume flavour. It ends with a floral lingering aftertaste.

Overall - A nice refreshing beer that has some great flavours for summer. I would like a tad less floral flavour but it's not too over the top. It comes across a bit like a lemon cough drop at times, but not in a bad way. Anyways, a good beer that is worth picking up.. at least once.

500mL bottle from the LCBO, part of the summer release. Enjoyed the winter brews from them, so I was excited to see more from them on the shelves. And it's hot as stink out, and I just finished some yard work - clearly, this is perfect weather for a saison.

Poured into my trusty Duvel chalice. Hazy golden brew, about a half inch of foam that settles into a thick ring. Looks about right for the style.

A yeastier, maltier nose that reminds me more so of a strong pale or tripel than a saison. A bit of citrus and herbal hops as well.

Tasty saison, very refreshing. Grapefruit, clove, herbs, lemon, a bit of yeast and bready malt, nicely balanced. The finish is quite citrussy, though the medicinal, herbal hops stick around for quite some time. Mild carbonation, great body to this. It's going down at record speed.

Not quite as dry and musky as I'm used to in a saison, but this is certainly tasty stuff.
