Poured into pint.
Opaque with 2-finger tan head, good retention.Heavy load of sediment.
Smell - strict and solid, nutty, roasted, licorice, rye bread, dark chocoate.
Taste - utterly complex and rich, vinous, roasted, coffee, chocolate, char, some oat roundness.
Medium body, soft carbonation.
Outstanding..

Reviewed in the "1001" I Had this twice... but probably not a third. To me, the use of hops plays too much to the American market.

I'll start off my saying that I have a weak nose and very understated taste buds. Years of smoking and salty foods is what I blame it on.

L: Pitch black. Couldn't get darker. Hold it up to a light and it almost becomes more black. Tanned head of a decent size when first poured but it dissipates quickly.

S: Quite strong. Almost soapy, yet pleasant. Notes of tar and mild smoke.

T: Damn fine. Powerful, slightly bitter and soapy.

F: Oh so smooth. Light carbonation. Feels as velvety as its darkness suggests.

O: It's good. It's not quite a 5* for me - I could do with the head staying for longer and a more complex smell and taste to it. It's pricey but I bought it as a treat beer and it's certainly made me feel happy. Give it a go - maybe on the first night of a long weekend or a holiday.

Brewed on 12.16.14.
L - dark with almost no head

S - nutty mostly

T - nutty herbal, cocoa a bit of sweetness and rum cake

F - Sweet then dry which might come from the oat

O - A good ris but I prefered the first cold sip than the ones following. It's not a complex brew and I'd like to see some more background

Black pour, red to the edge. 1/3" tan head. Aroma was a licorice, chocolate malt, bitterness.

Taste actually didn't come across much like the aroma. Wasn't overly bitter, hid the alcohol pretty well. Some dark fruit notes, some chocolate malt. Expensive stuff, good, but would not repeat given the price.
