In regard to another older review: it says now clearly on the label of the bottle that it's a peat smoked barleywine, so this fact cannot be missed. However, the idea of a smoked barleywine seems indeed odd to me.

Appearance: Black, small lacing, almost no foam.
Sweet aroma of liquorice and vanilla.
Slightly higher viscosity.
Tastes sweet, with flavors of peat and vanilla. Similarities to Islay's typical peaty whiskeys, though in beer-form and much sweeter.

Haven't had a bad one from this brewery yet, and this one is no exception.

April 2009: 500 ml bottle, batch #400, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11%, 26 P, 50 IBU. Very dark brown colour, nearly black, with a moderate but lasting tan head. Aroma of salt water, tar, smoke and some coffee. Full and rich mouthfeel. Excellent flavour, lots of chewy malty sweetness, roasted notes, coffee, tar, some liquorice, pine needles, salty finish, noticeable hops with just the right bitterness. Very well balanced. Another great achievement from Nøgne Ø.

Had I known this was a smoked barleywine I wouldn'thave bought it. Personally I think its a sin to smoke a barleywine. Maybe Nogne O should mention that its a smoked beer on the label! Having said that. Overall its not a bad beer. I think it would be much better if it wasn't smoked. The smoke flavor bacically ruins what I think would have been a really good barleywine.

Poured from a bottle with a best by 12/01/22 date, into the test glass.
A - Murky dark copper color, solid carbonation yields a solid off white cap. Lacing id spotty during the experience
S - Smoked malts, toffee, cinnamon, some tobacco, sweet brown sugar.
T - Follows the nose well, add some toffee, fig and smoked ham
M - Slick at 11% but not to sweet, the carbonation moves things along. Pleasant dry finish, with a maple candy linger.
O - A very enjoyable, yet challenging offering, if you dont like smoked malts then skip this. For me this is the total package, Barleywine traits and a Norwegian smoked Ale.

Pours a brown color. The head is less than 1 finger, and tan. What head is there isn't long lasting.
The nose is really nice. I am a fan of smoke flavors in beer, and this has it. Nice mellow, almost sweet smoke aroma. Quite pleasing.
Taste - There's a sweetness up front, that turns on the backside into the smoke. That being said, I also get a medicinal flavor mixed into this, that isn't pleasing. It reminds me a bit of cough syrup. That really ruins the flavor to me.
The body is ok, Maybe a bit light for the ABV.
It started out so good, but the flavor just kills it for me. If it didn't have that cough syrup flavor, it would be a much better beer.

a fascinating smoked barleywine, 2010 edition holding up really well. this has an almost peaty character to it, intense smoked elements in play, spiciness from the rye, and still some residual sugar, very robust but well mellowed over time. faint oxidation in the nose, but it works in these styles, and with the smoke and the sweet, its just another facet of this complex brew. it is still a bit boozy, and it has not nearly as much body as some of these do, perhaps broken down over time, so it feels a little exposed to me both in smell and taste, but there is a smoothness here too, a richness even if its not real heavy. i get maple and brown sugar, campfire smoke, peaty scotch, and a raisin fruitiness to finish. a little astringent, a little acrid from the smoke. strong and delicious, the kind of beer that i think extended aging really favors. these guys do some fabulously interesting strong ales, and while this one isnt as weird or challenging as a lot of them, i really appreciated the opportunity to drink on one thats this mature. i continue to love these guys and seek out their beers!

Looks thick and oily. One of the frothier heads I've seen on a beer.

Smells peaty like a islay single malt, hardly getting much else.

Tastes smokey, charred, peaty, bitter. This tastes like laphroig brewed a beer.

Mouh feel is stupid creamy. It's an overused descriptor but this beer embodies it in feel.

Overall I bought this because I love smoked beers. A barleywine seeker might not appreciate it quite the same but overall I'm enjoying this slow sipper very much.

2012 vintage, consumed in 2016. This beer pours a deep clear ruby amber with a small head. The aroma features prunes, licoruice, acetone, smoke, and iodine. The flavor is lighter than may be expected - with raisn, prune, dried cherry, peaty smoke, and iodine - it is sort of a stout meats a barleywine. I am not sure if the iodiney flavors are a product of bad aging, but I believe this has been refrigerated since at the retail shop. The mouthfeel is fullish, with creamy carbonation. Overall I had a hard time getting past the iodine and smoke - flavors I love in Scoch, but that seemed like off bedfellows in this beer.

Dark brown with a copper tinge. Topped with 2 fingers of beige, foamy head.

Smells of creme brulee, syrup, brown rice syrup, and a hint of smoke, and bbq sauce. Slightly rusty.

Tastes very sweet with hints of bbq sauce all the way, and dark, toasted, slightly burnt notes. Charred bitterness in the aftertaste.

Moderate, slightly thin body, moderate, streamy carbonation.

My brother gave me this one for in New Hamburg, ON, Canada in 2014. It was cellared in my cupboard from the cottage these last 2 years there, as I had no luggage space. This time, it made the trip to Asia, where I am now enjoying it by the Christmas tree in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Its December 10th, 2016.

Dark mahogany color with just a bit of tan foam. Aroma has some smoked malt and burnt milk. Taste starts with sweet malt, some roasted/smoked notes, more bitter and hoppy on the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Quite complex flavors, alcohol is hidden well but it's not something I enjoyed too much.
