500ml into a pint

A - Pours a deep brown color. Pretty opaque color. Off white head formation, not much for being retained.

S - Hefty nose profile, lots of hops - citrus and fruity. Some background of caramel malts.

T - Starts off with some citrus hops, very fruity. Mid-stream gets some bitterness. The big malt backbone makes its way through. Some alcohol warmth in the finish.

M - Full bodied, thick and sugary. Not much for carbonation. Some alcohol warmth as it stis on the tongue.

O/D - A huge big Double IPA. Lots of everything, super heavy hop profile that leans heavily towards the citrus. Filling of course, goes down slow but easy.

July 2010: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. (A couple unpasteurised kegs will also be available at Cardinal.) ABV is 10%. Murky brown colour, big cream-coloured to beige head. Lovely aroma of American and New Zealand hops (Chinook, Simcoe, Centennial, Pacific Gem and Nelson Sauvin), fruity and resinous notes, hints of heather honey and orange marmalade. The flavour has of course loads of hops, but the bitterness is not too extreme. Piny, resinous and grapefruity notes. A pleasant malty sweetness balances the hoppiness. The high ABV is noticeable, but not really disturbing. A worthy brew to celebrate Nøgne Ø’s batch #500.

Golden brown color, hazy, with a decent white head. Aromas are intense, mainly containing orange, malt, grapefruit, honey and ripe grapes. Enormous bitterness from the beginning on, accompanied by sugary, burned malts. Oily, slick mouthfeel, medium bodied. Aftertaste is defined by an intense, long staying bitterness. Carbonation is low, doesnt support the bitterness as much as the sweet malts. Hops tend to be full of lime and pine, wrapped in honey. The usual flavors of refreshing tropical fruits are missing. Bitterness kicks in very sharp and intense, buts stays in overall balance, due to the present malt-backbone, adding a warm, sweet note to the beer.
