May 2012: 500 ml bottle, batch #761, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 9%. 45 IBU. Pitch black colour, large and creamy tan head. Very nice aroma with roasty and fruity notes, notes of sour berries, oak, red wine vinegar, mild coffee and dark chocolate. The flavour is sweet and roasty, notes of coffee, dark bitter chocolate and liquorice. Bitter finish.

Brown/black hue.

Dark khaki head; minimal lace.

Dark cherry, slight black licorice & a hint of booze in the nose.

Thick mouthfeel.

Slight black licorice, black cherry, baker's chocolate & a hint of cream up front; slightly boozy & bitter on the finish.

Complex & savory, but only for the coldest winter nights.

Poured into a pint glass. A medium-dark brown color with a modest tan head. Dark chocolate, caramel, and roasted grain with a faint floral hop presence on the nose. The taste was close - the floral hops were up front sort of muddling the malt flavors. Chocolate and roasty notes were there but less well-defined. Feel was medium and ABV was well-hidden. Overall it was well-constructed but the flavors seemed to be overwhelmed by the hops.

Still very classy this imperial porter pours a deep black colour.
Nice caramel and roasted notes with some spicy notes.
Silky smooth mouthfeel and warming alcohol add up for a nice treat

Pours a wonderfully deep chocolate/raisin brown. Just enough light gets through to keep it this side of black. With a thin beige head.
Smell is dates/raisins, whiskey cake, molasses. Veers toward a barleywine like smell, or an old ale. Very rich, very complex, benefits from rising toward room temperature.
Taste is surprisingly smooth compared to the smell. Roasty/spicy malt along with some mellow dark chocolate notes.
Mouthfeel is pretty spot on for a porter. In spite of a big nose and a deep dark color the body is very mild and smooth. Drinks like a proper after work beer for 3 or 5 pints.
Truly great beer here. If you're a fan of darker beers at all you will enjoy this.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass, nearly still with only a tiny patch of khaki foam and a ring around the glass with slight slippery lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, molasses, cocoa, coffee, mild rye; rich. Flavor is semi-sweet dark toasted malt, rye bread crust, dark cocoa, hints of coffee and toffee. Finishes with nice cocoa, rye and dark dry malt. Medium bodied with good creaminess and fine carbonation despite the still pour. A full bodied and flavorful porter that displays robust, genuine rye bread character. I was a bit cautious about this one because I'm not a fan of sour notes in porters and rye can be tart. There is a very faint rye tartness, but most of the flavor is pumpernickel rye with great cocoa notes. The interaction of rye and the chocolate seems to be what is producing coffee flavors. I've been impressed by dark malt beers from both of these breweries and this is no exception. Very nicely done and flavorful. Glad I found a bottle of this.

From a 500ml bottled served slightly chilled at 19 degrees Celsius into a snifter. Brew date on the bottle reads: 09.08.2016. The beer has spent almost a full year in the bottle.

Look: The beer pours an opaque black with 1cm of dense, mocha head that dissipates into a partial film in just over a minute. It looks as expected from an aged, 9% ABV beer.

Smell: Wow, intense. Rich and robust as much as it is strong and balanced. Roasty with faint alcohol note. I'm getting rye bread, coffee, brown sugar, chocolate, and black licorice with mild dark fruit. Very enticing.

Taste: Oh my gosh. Very much like the aroma with plenty of strength and a great balance. An explosion of roasty and complex dark malts with notes of chocolate, coffee, black licorice, brown sugar, and dark fruit. You can taste hints of alcohol, but in a pleasant way. The finish is long, strong, and bitter with a considerable mineral character.

Feel: What a presence! The liquid just fills your mouth with a full body and low carbonation. Slick, mouth-coating, heavy, velvety, chewy, and slightly astringent. Restrained and smooth alcohol presence. So many words and yet they don't seem enough.

Overall: There's no question this brew is among my favourite porters. It's bold, robust, and complex with a massive presence on the palate. Excellent craftsmanship. Simply wonderful. A must-try in the world of dark, strong beers. In addition, it aged exceptionally well.

A nice, safe porter that will not knock your socks off with its taste (although it will with its alcohol content). Not a strong aftertaste, less roasting and no chocolate - this is a bit different than the norm but it's pleasant enough to be perhaps enjoyed by even those who are not porter fans.
