Appearance was a nice dark roast coffee with a creamy two finger head with nice retention.

Toasted grain, with hints of coffee and smoke filled the nose.

This one really lost me on the taste. A wee heavy on the "roasty and toasty" grain. Slight bitterness at the end which was the only redeaming factor. Tasted like a burnt piece of wood in my mouth.

Slightly watery on the mouthfeel. No solid body here.

This one's drinkable in a pinch. I really enjoy other offerings from Picaroons.

Thanks to schen9303 for bringing this one back for me. Poured from a 16oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

A: Gentle pour yields a 3 finger fluffy mocha head with great retention. Beer is a clear, nearly opaque black cherry color. Lacing is patchy and stringy with great stick. Every dark beer should look like this.

S: Caramel, toffee, sweet chocolate, licquorice, butterscotch, lactose, and a hint of cocoa and coffee in the back. Sweeter than most this style but very enticing and robust.

T: Slightly sour coffee, toasted malts, butterscotch faded all the way into the background. Brown sugar and licquorice towards the middle and end. There's a hole in the flavor if that makes any sense, like this beer is desperatly missing a key ingredient. My guess is the complete lack of creme and accompanying smoothness and tightness. Finish is harsh bitter coffee with a cocoa and chocolate aftertaste.

M: Light bodied, carbonated, and much too coarse for the style. Rough around the edges and too lively going down. Finish is clean and aftertaste fades quickly.

D: After getting past this gorgeous brew and its lusciously rich aroma, things go downhill quickly. Coffee is too prominent here and toasted malt character combines to create an odd sourness. Body is way too thin and carbonated for the style. If the taste and feel had followed the first two categories, this might've been the perfect porter. As is, its just a bit below average.

Sampled on my trip to New Brunswick. Appears very deep brown with some chestnut around the edges. Fizzy tan head with some retention.

Very malty aroma, smooth coffee and caramel. A bit of an earthiness mixes in.

Chocolatey dark malts, with some nuttiness. Slightly musty finish. Feels more like a full flavoured brown ale than a porter to taste. Good though.

Medium body and slightly prickly carbonation. Not bad, worth trying but I won't chase down any more bottles.

Picaroons Mans Best Friend
Batch #1346

Style: English Porter

A - Black, very dark, shows ruby red when you shine a flashlight through it. Thick foamy Caramel-Tan Head that sticks around, good amount of lacing.

S - Lots of Roasted Malts, Chocolate, Caramel, Coffee, smells absolutely delicious.

T - Espresso taste is dominant, roasty flavour, hints of chocolate and caramel, finishing off with a dry hoppy bitterness.

M - Not too thick or creamy, bordering on watery but not quite. Carbonation is good. Easy to drink.

D - This beer is awesome, it's right up there in my books with Fullers London Porter. This beer is a very solid attempt for a local craft brew to make a fantastic Porter and it works very well. I can't say enough about how good this beer is, and it's one of my all time favourites.

This beer is everything I like about a porter. Very dark brown colour with thick tan head. Plenty of roast malts in the nose, with a hint of smoke, caramel and coffee. Deep roasted malt flavours, chocolate, coffee, toffee, with a balancing bitter hop finish. Medium-bodied, light carbonation. I love this beer.

A: Poured with a small, light tan head that diminished quickly. Body is jet-black and opaque, with a bit of ruby highlights when held to the light.

S: Lots of dark chocolate and roasted flavors, with a background of light sweetness.

T: Bitterness is quite high. Lots of roasted and burnt flavors.

M: Light-medium body, with very soft carbonation.

D: A little high on the burnt flavors, and maybe a little rough around the edges. Good marks on appearance and smell, however.

Large, rocky beige head. A cross between blanket and web-like lace. Dark brown color where bright light can pass...barely. It doesn't seem cloudy.

Powdered cocoa predominates the smell. There's a bit of chalk to the nose as well.

The taste leans toward dark chocolate, but there's a sourness that is similar to unripened stone fruit. The body is thin for a porter--the carbonation is high. The swallow features a small level of hop bitterness.

G: Pint Glass

A: Dark opaque body. Two fingers of light tan coloured head leaving blotchy lacing.

S: Toasted malts, roasted [weak] coffee beans.

T: Hints of toasted malts, light caramel and bitter coffee.

M: Very thin, with low carbonation and a sticky caramel after taste.

D: It's easy to drink, but it feels and tastes like water.

500ml bottle, big thanks to bobsy for sharing this.

Pours a clear very dark red, thick light tan head forms, slowly settles down to a medium ring around the glass, lace chunks stick, looks good.

Smell is nice, chocolate wafer, cocoa powder, dry roast, caramel, toasted oats, lightly sweet and fruity, very malty stuff, pretty nice.

Taste is similar, very dry, roasty, lightly nutty, has a mini wheat flavour, a bit sugary through the middle with some sour fruit, toasty, chocolate milk, nice stuff.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation, very dry and slightly powdery body, but I like it. Thanks Rob!
