Unbelievable chunky lace on the glass. The head isn't nearly impressive, but it lasts. The liquid is near black where no light shines through.

Burnt chocolate that smells like old, ignored coffee. No cream, no hop--just black coffee.

The body is thin and the carbonation is relatively high. This has a burnt coffee flavor like the smell suggests. There are also a mild sour cherry notes. There's a bit of harshness to this brew that reminds me of Beamish Stout.

Got this bad boy via trade with Moniker in New Scotland or as the locals call it..Nova Scotia.

Ink black, impressive foamy tan head with excellent retention & lacing.

Roasted mas, hiont of dark coffee, slight sourness.

Sharp sour bite in the first few seconds. Found it off-putting. Sour tartness lingers and then the roast malt character of the brew coomes through quite cleanly. Finish is bitter and slightly dry.

Maybe a bit too much on the carbonation end and it fells slightly astringent.

Potential is there. Wondering if the trip across the entire country contributed to the sour taste I can't seem to shake.

500mL bottle with no freshness date poured into pint glass. Label remarks that though the beer will be consistently an Irish Dry Stout, there will be variations in the precise recipe used batch to batch.

Pours a very dark brown, nearly black with a large, fluffy tan head with good retention.

Dark chocolate, creamy caramel, and some dark cherry notes on the nose.

Well-roasted grain flavour up front, mellowing and sweetening with some creamy chocolate and toffee before a bitter, burnt finish. Light smoky/stale (in a good way) taste throughout. Very rich flavours here.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, creamy, but with a touch too much carbonation.

This is a very pleasing example of the style, rich, dark, flavourful and smooth. Goes down very nicely.

Pours a solid dark brown with ruby highlights at the edges and a decent sized tan head that slowly dissipates to a ring on top. Aromas of dark and milk chocolate with lots of creamed coffee and bits of caramel and toffee to round it out. The flavor is rich chocolate and caramel with roasted creamed coffee and some light sugar and toffee to round it out. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation, and a creamy silky mouthfeel. I was impressed with this brew, its a very nice stout. Maybe a bit more body than an Irish dry should have, but I enjoyed the heck out of it.

500ml bottle, the latest offering from this brewery to make it west to Alberta, and just in time for St. Paddy's Day!

This beer pours a rather solid black abyss, with subtle red cola basal edges, and three fingers of puffy, rocky, and fairly creamy brown head, which leaves some spewing volcano effluvia lace around the glass as it slowly and evenly subsides.

It smells of semi-sweet milk chocolate, roasted caramel malt, singed dark sugars, a bit of slightly off milkiness, faint black orchard fruit, and plain earthy, leafy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, bitter cocoa powder, day-old cafe-au-lait, muddled berry-like dark fruity notes, a hint of free-range wet ashiness, and more understated (but they're there) leafy, weedy, and grassy hoppiness.

The carbonation is nice and active in its gently probing frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and perhaps a bit too clammy to be deemed particularly smooth. It finishes off-dry, but not by too much - the roast and the hops keeping a stern but loving eye on the proceedings.

Overall, a generally well-made version of a dry Irish stout, with the roast maybe held back for the sweetness-craving North American palate. Easy to drink, but man, and maybe it's just me, but I could really go for some salty bread or lamb stew right now!

500 mL bottle stamped Batch 1100, Packaged ????2/10. Thanks to BBrianBoogie. Poured into a Duvel tulip around 6C.

Stellar tan head atop a dark body. Lots of retention and lacing. Body and nose have moderate roasted grain aroma with molasses being the predominant quality and a bit of coffee on the finish. A surprisingly high amount of sweetness is found in the nose and on the finish. Started better than it finished as it warmed...

Bottle split with a friend he brought back from Fredricton. From rough notes.

A - Poured black with a mocha head. Some slight lace and retention was fairly good.

S - Roasty with a good amount of coffee.

T - Much the same with a fairly strong coffee element. Very nice.

M - Medium body and just barely medium carbonation seem appropriate.

O/D - Nice. A good drinkable stout.

A: Poured with a very large, brown head that appeared fizzy and first and then started looking kind of creamy. Diminished very slowly to 1/2 finger. Some light lacing left on the glass. Body is black and therefore opaque.

S: Nice aroma consisting mainly of chocolate, with some slight roasted coffee in there as well.

T: Average duration flavor of, again, mainly chocolate, with a very slight bitter finish... that actually comes across as watery after swallowing. It's not a very thin ending or anything, but it just feels like it should taste a little... fuller.

M: Light-bodied and slightly creamy, with soft carbonation. Again, a little too watery.

D: A pretty good stout that starts to open up a bit as you continue sipping on it... if the mouthfeel and finish were improved slightly, I think it could be REALLY good.

This is a beer approaching stellar territory... it's not quite there yet, though.

It pours a VERY dark brown with hints of red in it. The head is, at first, nearly as dark, and as the fizz goes out of it, leaving lots of (now creamier and long-lasting) head, it gets paler.

It smells pretty good... mostly bitter chocolate and coffee.

The flavour is a little lighter than expected. It still has a good flavour... it's just not as full / rich as the pour made me think it would / should be. A bit bitter, but not too much.

Carbonation is fine, but it's a little more watery than it should be. I also wonder if I'm picking up some of the alcohol in the thin feel.

Overall, a decent beer. I'd have one at a restaurant or something. As the bottle says, they're still experimenting with it... if it gets any better, I hope I hear about it!

G: Pint Glass

A: Black body, 2 fingers of light mocha head. Moderate lacing. There is also some odd particles collected at the bottom of my glass - maybe yeast?

S: Chocolate, caramel, sweet malts, grainy hops and a hint of coffee beans

T: Smooth-creamy chocolate, hops and malts. Blended hints of caramel and coffee.

M: Medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a nice chocolate finish

D: I don't know how this differs from a porter or American stout, but it's not bad either way - just not that special.

Thanks to B Dog in Mocton for sending this out to the West Coast.
The appearance is dense black with a volumous foamy espresso coloured head tha disapates leaving behind chunky lacing. Smells of maple syrup and heavy roasted malts. There is some cola and burnt sugar flavours with very pleasing toasted marshmellow like creamy flavours on the finish. Great mouthfeel and the sweetness level is bang on. There is enough bitterness and heavy burnt flavours to make this semi dry stout very enjoyable. Cheers.

A- A oily black with absolutely no transparency. As black and thick ad possible. A thin layer of espresso-like head greets the nose. No lacing in my glass.

S- Slight notes of roasted malts give off an espresso character. A little black licorice as well.

T- A good balance of malts and bitter hops make this quite enjoyable. Earthy, dark chocolates and espresso mix well.

M- I find this a rather thin Irish Dry and therefore easy to consume. No carbonation to speak of.

O- I enjoyed this beer as most Picaroons products are worthy of purchase. I would enjoy this later in the evening while relaxing.

Picaroons Timberhog Stout
Batch# 1380

Style: Irish Dry Stout

A - Deep Black, thick foamy chocolate brown head. Almost no light passes through with a flashlight.

S - Chocolate Malt, roasty, hint of coffee.

T - Espresso, hints of chocolate and burnt malt, decently Bitter. Slight hint of grassy notes, but barely noticeable.

M - Somewhat Creamy, not too carbonated. finishes dry in the back of the throat.

D - Great attempt at an Irish Dry Stout, very much akin to O'Haras. Perhaps not quite as heavy as a Stout should come across. But overall it's delicious.
