A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2012. Named after York minster, the largest medieval cathedral in England and a dominant feature of York.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A deep golden-amber colour with good carbonation. Forms a decent head of white foam that subsides after a minute or two. Aroma is almost non-existant; I'm just not getting much off this ale. Vague hints of caramel malt and stewed hops.

Tastes of mild caramel malt with a harsh bitter finish. Notes of caramel/toffee, stewed leaves and a whisper of aromatic hops. An unpleasant harshness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry - quite astringent. Leaves the palate dry. Aftertaste of faint malt and a harsh bitter note.

Not brilliant. The bitterness is crude and there is a lack of aromatic hops to add balance to the flavour. The lack of aroma and relatively weak flavours don't make this particularly inviting. Coming from my nearest city, I really want to like this but I just can't. Not recommended.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 11 Jun 2012, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard in Oct 2011.

Light amber, almost golden in colour, bright, clear and clean looking: good solid blanket of foaming bubbles on top. Lacing held throughout the review.

The smell was fairly sweet, with a nectar and floral aroma. Add a tub of toffee and molasses to the nector without any extra sugary smell and you are almost there.

The tatse was a good blend of bittering hops and sweetening malts (not unlike the smell).

Medium body depth for its alcohol content and beer style: I found it a well balanced beer with enough points to want another.

I believe it is brought out on draught occasionally, would love to try that version.

I picked this one up at a Saturday market in York, along with a few others they made, direct from the brewer.

It poured well into the bottle, and had a good color. Everything was "good." A fine session beer with nothing objectionable in the flavor.
