2009 vintage purchased at the release. Bottle # 48/694. Pours a deep brown/near black in the glass, topped with 2 rich fingers of foamy dark mocha head. This retains with a smooth creaminess, mostly bunching around the sides and leaving back some light lacing. The aroma is a delicious blend of coffee, burnt molasses, brown sugar, chocolate and vanilla. Charred wood notes really blend in nicely off the edges. The taste is a similar mix of chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruit, coconut, vanilla and roasted coffee. Burnt barrel and lingering sweetness leave this charred, spicy and sticky on the back-end, with a touch of toast and cocoa powder lingering in the finish. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied with some initial sharpness to the carbonation which gradually gives way to more of a chewy creaminess along the back. You do get some alcohol here but it’s mostly from the barrel character, as this remains extremely smooth for the size. Wow, this has aged beautifully. The profiles have a ton of complexity and flavor integration to them and the overall smoothness of this is top-notch! This seems to be peaking now, I’d suggest that you crack a bottle and see for yourself.

A 2009 bomber one of 694 total poured into a tulip. The brew appears black in color with nearly 2 fingers worth of dark tan head that slowly fades leaving strings and spots of lacing effect sticking to the glass. When held to the light, the brew shows the faintest amount of ruby and dark brown clarity around the edges. A light swirl revives a finger of dark tan head back to the surface.

The aroma is sweet and sticky with hints of honey and vanilla. Dark hints of fruity alcohol blend into whiskey with quite a prominent force of accenting character of caramel and toffee. Almost a fudge character comes out with chocolate and a hint of roast. As the brew warms up, the focus on bourbon barrel really becomes the star of the show. The smell of this brew is pretty damn fantastic, I hesitate to call it perfect but damn if I could give it a 4.75 I would.

The taste is still pretty darn brutal and I mean that in a good way. Big burnt to roasty bitter grain/coffee flavoring that is immediately accented by a big bourbon barrel impact. Spirit reinforced alcohol is out in the open with a hint of honey-like sweetness, caramel and vanilla. This is a rock star of a brew that blends well from one flavor into the next. It is a well married pairing of almost ashy thick imperial stout that is bold on it's own accord but with the big bourbon barrel character standing up against this, it just makes for an awesome experience.

This is a medium to fuller bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation that is uplifting on the palate and just a touch maybe too much. This is a big bold brew with a beautiful balance of character. I remember having this beer when it was fresh and really enjoyed it which is what prompted me to trade for a bottle and it's follow-up release a year later. There was lots of talk about infection with this brew so I was hesitate about opening it and tainting my memory of just how awesome this beer was. Now I sit here feeling guilty that I opened this up, man is it awesome and without any indication of infection/off character. World class offering right here.

Bottle from Photekut - thanks JR! Finally got around to reviewing this nearly 3 years after it was released - what a long strange trip it's been. Served in a Kuhnhenn tulip.

A - Finger of tan foam settles to a thick collar, wispy cap, and spotty lace work. Near-black body with brown highlights at the fringes of the glass.

S - Chocolate, dark fruits, earthy bourbon, loads of vanilla, light oak, and some mild honey as well. Quite sweet, with only mild roast qualities.

T - The flavor is a delightful blend of dark chocolate, oak, marshmallow, fudge, caramel, and light bourbon flavors. There are some light fruity flavors that may be indicative of age, or might have been there all along, but there isn't any obvious oxidation yet. Really mellow, with nary a trace of the 10.13%.

M - Medium-full body, with a smooth texture, dry and mildly tannic finish, and lingering residual stickiness that coats the palate. Perhaps a hint of alcohol warmth, but less than you'd expect from the listed ABV.

D - I thought I had this a few years ago, but I'm now wondering if that was the 2010 edition as this was significantly better than my previous experience. This was a big hit at our Canadian Thanksgiving dinner and met with universal praise from beer experts and novices alike - I had to fight off my guests to get a little bit more into my glass. If you're still holding on to this vintage, I'd recommend giving it a go as I can't imagine it getting better.

A: pours a smooth, dark brown with a thin mocha head, which leaves the surface quickly.

S: smells of heavy bourbon, as it warms the strength of the bourbon aroma will mellow a bit

T: a bit strong when it pours out chilled, warming improves the flavor; thinking this would be very good in a year and a half on a chilly , quiet, winter evening in front of an outside fire pit, with a very light , gentle snow falling.

M: very pleasing mouthfeel: just right.

O: I enjoyed this big, bourbony, full - smooth imperial stout, and would definitely pick another one up if not prohibitivly expensive( no more than $45), and then age it just as I said above, about a year and a half.

Bottle provided by cuzco at a recent tasting.

Pours a very dark, velvety brown color with a nice creamy textured inch of khaki head which leaves just a lacing as it recedes.

Aromas begin with mild boozy bourbon barrel and associated bourbon smells, vanilla and toffee predominantly. Also the traditional stout smells; roasty dark chocolate and light coffee presence as well. Notes of various dark fruits emerge as it warms.

The tastes follow the nose but in opposite fashion. The simple Imperial Stout flavors begin with roasted maltiness, dark bitter cocoa and light espresso. Then you get the nice kick from the Pappy barrels; vanilla and toffee once again. Dark caramelized sugars and raisin emerge as it warms, but not in any significant fashion.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonated. Finish is a nice balance of roasty malts and sweet barrel. Not offensive or boozy at all; quite mellowed actually.

Overall this was a nice treat which I was happy to sample. A really well made barrel aged Imperial Stout which is drinking very nice at this point after 2+ years. Definitely not the most intense barrel aging, like any BCS variation but more so than a Weyerbacher Heresy or a KBS. Glad I was fortunate to sample it, but not a MUST have for me going forward.

Pours dark black with no head. Aroma of bourbon, bourbon and more bourbon. Taste follows the nose, chocolate, bourbon and slight honey in the finish. This is a really nice beer, I love the bourbon in it. Smooth for what it is. I could drink this all day.

pour is a black opaque liquid that looks nice.
Aroma contains a rounded character that combines all the flavors inside into a chocolate and barrel concoction,sort of a dry coco mixed with the barrels.
The flavors contain some heat but not too strong, dry cocos mixed with oak and bourbon, some vanilla, and a lite roast flavor to round this one out.
The body is just a bit light on mouthfeel, could use a bit higher OG imo.

from the Vertical we tasted i think this one is prime at 2 years.

Color: Dark, dark brown, almost black. No head even after an aggressive pour and it leaves behind hardly any lacing.

Nose: Wonderful! Full of amazing scents. Bourbon, vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, cocoa, mellow honey, and a pleasant roastiness are all present. Very well done for a stout.

Palate: Full bodied and and complex. Drink ability is amazing, so smooth you can just put it down to quick. The carbonation is ok, not great, but nothing to hinder the quality of this beer. The tongue gets coated with waves of vanilla, chocolate, and nice, warm bourbon flavors. The abv is so well masked that it can hardly be detected in the mouth.

Finish: Long, warm, and with plenty of texture. Plenty of flavors become evident as it goes down the hatch, but Bourbon and honey are most evident. A sweetness eases the bit of abv that shows up at the end. A fantastic imperial stout that provides plenty to like. A true pleasure to drink.

App- A very dark brown color with a very creamy looking pour, not as dark as Event but quite lacking in color none the less. A nice textured one finger head with just a tad bit of cling and lace on this one.

Smell- Wofty booze notes from the bourbon are the first scents out of the glass. A bigger roast note comes after and a little creamy smooth chocolate on the end of the nose.

Taste- This had a nice tinge of the PVW barrels and was again quite smooth yet for some reason it was a bit granular. A more forward malt presence and a bit roasty. A very nice collaboration stout.

Mouth- Medium bodied and medium carbonated. Retains a bit of chocolatey barrel goodness.

Drink- A long time want of mine. This was very tasty and lived up to my expectations. I'd love to have an older bottle some day.

2009 vintage. Poured at the Westland, MI BA tasting on Friday night at room temprature.

A: Deep chocolate brown. Minimal head and lacing.

S: Sweet, chocolatey bourbon.

T: This is one of the top 5 BA stouts I have had. Being 2 years old, it had exactly the right amount of bourbon heat to it. Flavors of chocolate, and caramel come through on the finish. I do not taste the honey that is said to be in this one.

M: Medium body with some carbonation.

O: Very glad to check this one off the list. Well done! I did not see any of the reported infection in this paticular bottle. I would drink this again anytime.

(09 bottle) Pours a pitch black into a sifter. 1/4 in tan head comes up and dissolves slowly into a very slight layer of head on the top. Pretty strong lacing and sense of cabonation (to the style anyway), which I like in terms of appearance since it makes the beer appear not so "dead" in the glass like a lot of big IS's do.

Smell is relatively strong notes of malt sweetness and bourbon. I suppose a little vanille in there but it is relatively muted. A pleasant smelling beer that makes one eager to take a drink.

Taste is in line with the smell. Bourbon is upfront, followed by sweetness and then a kind of dark chocolate finish as you start getting through the glass. Not as bourbon heavy as the bourbon county series, but more bourbon notes than KBS. I'm not so sure that all the flavors come together cohesively for the entire glass, but it is still very pleasant and not overly hot.

Mouthfeel is very smooth, though not as creamy as is needed for the size of this beer. There is a little bit of fizziness to the finish. Still, smoothness if that is paramount here, and it has that.

Overall this is a pleasant beer to drink. Compared to others in this category it holds up, but does not belong near the top of the heap. Obviously a lot of skill and effort went into the beer though and it's good to see the state of NC producing something like this. Worth having if you get a chance to, but honestly not worth the driving, waiting, and $20 to buy. For the 2010 edition I was able to just buy a single bottle at the amos howards restaurant when I was driving through. I would say that that route is a little more fitting for the beer.

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color with a thick blanket of a head that leaves plenty of viscous lacing behind

Smell: Charred barrel, dark fruit/chocolate, bourbon and vanilla

Taste: Well-roasted malt, with considerable dark fruit complexity, up front; by mid-palate, the chocolate, vanilla and bourbon flavors arrive; after the swallow, there is a nice convergence of the dark fruit and bourbon, with a hint of alcohol adding another dimension to the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with mellow carbonation; quite a bit thin for such a big beer

Overall: I have cellared this beer since the release about 18 months ago as I wanted to let the alcohol mellow and the flavors converge - mission accomplished and, with the exception of the mouthfeel, the beer has delivered in most aspects

Had this at Duckworths. I really enjoyed the story how it was three different breweries coming together to make something that I must say was truly enjoyable. It poured dark brown almost black. Nice head and good lacing. There was definitely a bourbon smell coming off along with roasted barley I think. Most of all, it tasted absolutely wonderful. Really distinctive. The mouthfeel was good with good carbonation. Overall, this is a wonderful beer if you really like bourbon barrel aged beers.

A-pour dark brown or black with a creamy dark tan head.

S-the nose is slightly off, lots of roasted malts, slightly burnt, notes of burnt coffee, light sweetness of raisins and plums.

T-again lots of roasted malts with notes of rich chocolate malt. bourbon and wood, malts sweetness in back with dark cherries and caramel.

M-good full body, slighlty chewy, good carbonation balancing the big body and slick on the back of the throat.

D-rather sweet, the nose was slighlty off and too burnt and roasty. the flavors are decent and very big.

S-very strange smelling. Can not put a finger on it at all. Maybe it is the barrals? No idea
T-very nice mellow bourbon taste. Very complex
M-medium body. Really makes my mouth water for more
O-if it smelled better I think it would be better. Mouth is watering for more.

Aroma:Caramel, malt, and a little bourbon.

Appearance:Black with tan head that fades quickly.

Taste:The main flavor in this beer is bourbon, with supporting caramel and malt flavors in the background. It's not overpowering though, it's quite pleasant and well balanced. There's also some dark fruits, raisins and plums.

Mouthfeel:Medium to thick body, kind of syrupy.

Drinkability:A very pleasant sipper.

2009 bottle thanks to brentk56 from Secret Santa '10. Poured from the bomber into a New Belgium goblet. The beer pours a nice oily black (light brown at the edges) with a thin light khaki head that quickly fades to a tight ring, leaving an oily lacing on the walls of the glass.

The smell is charred oak, bourbon, bourbon and more bourbon. There are hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut and alcohol heat, but this one is all bourbon in the nose, and it's very nice. As it warms there are slight hints of dark fruits underneath all the bourbon, but they are faint.

The taste follows the smell, but it's a bit less pronounced. The bourbon, vanilla and alcohol sweetness are still first and foremost, but there is a nice balance of charred barrel, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. This is a nice stout.

The beer is well carbonated, has a nice mouthfeel (just a bit on the thin side), and the alcohol heat is incorporated into the flavors nicely. This one hits all the notes of a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout nicely. I had heard some rumors of infection with this batch, but this bottle was very good.

Thanks to Hodgin (and cmrillo) for this 2009 bottle! 22oz brown glass pry-top bottle. Bottle #274 of 694. Opened at about 48 degrees.

Appearance: Pours a thick, oily black with rich creamy dark tan head that has great retention. Looks like it's been dolloped on there really. Just how a stout should look!

Nose: Aged vanilla beans come to mind and some lightly toasted oak. A little pear note, plus something like green coffee berries (or something vegetal). After a moment big roasted black coffee comes out, toasted bread, bourbon and brown sugar.

Palate: Medium-full bodied and noticeably bitter right off the bat. Texture is sort of rough, like coffee that has some grounds in it. Flavors are great and revolve around black coffee, black vanilla beans, charred wood, carob, tree bark and black top soil. Finish is long and lingering. Finish is quite dry.

Notes: I like this version better than the Foothills 2010 version. There seems to be more balance, more complexity of flavors and more body. Still very dry for the style and still reminds me of a drier version of BCBS. Cocoa nibs barely appear, maybe adding some bitterness?

A solid bourbon barrel aged beer. Has mellowed out very nicely since the release and really had a lot of subtlety to it that I'm loving! Cocao and vanillay bourbon without too much sweetness. Really a much more drinkable beer than most similar barrel aged stouts. A tasty treat :)

2009 bottle. Number 57 of 694. Huge thanks to Kegatron for this in our recent trade. Thanks again, Heath. Poured into town hall snifter:

A - Dark black with a one finger kahki head which dies quick. A gentle sworl brings some head back to life. A bit of lacing retention.

S - Nice dark fruits and great smell of gentle bourbon. Can also smell the coco nibs and honey. Somewhat reminds me of a bourbon barrel barleywine in some ways...

T - Great bourbon flavor, not offensive but it lets you know it's there. Hints of honey and a bit of a chard flavor. Roast malts, slight hints of coffee and bits of vanilla and oak.

M - Creamy and smooth. Carbonation is quite good. I enjoy the mouthfeel quite a bit.

D - Easy to drink. Nice for a cold Minnesota day. Very nice bourbon feel and flavor (I've never had a Pappy V. Winkle barrel aged beer before.) I wish I had another bottle to age, but I just had to try the one I had. Wonder what the 2010 is like...Will seek this again.

Pours black with a half-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of light roasted malts with good amounts of smooth vanilla. Also present are slight hints of dark fruit.

Tastes better and more refined than it smells. Moderately roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by large amounts of dark chocolate. Midway through the sip hints of vanilla make a brief appearance before fading out into a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's a bit on the thin side for subh a big and barrel-aged beer with decent carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I finished my glass quickly and could have another without a problem.

Overall I remember being more impressed with the bottles I had closer to the release date which isn't a good thing. It's not aging gracefully but it hasn't taken a nosedive either. Worth trying now rather than much later to judge for yourself.

Served next to the 2010. This was a good beer but not quite as good as the 2010.

Lighter aroma and head color. A tan head with low retention and some lacing. Dark brown in color nearly to the very edge.

A touch worn out in the aroma. There was a bit too much space in the bottle before opened and I thought I caught a hint of oxidation in the smell.

More metallic and dryer than the 2010. Still good flavoring though with roasted chocolate and bourbony vanillas melding into some molasses from the bottom of the bottle.

Almost full on the mouth with still a bit too much carbonation.

Medium drinkability. I wouldn't want to own too many of these and not have any drinking buddies but its still pretty delicious.

Thanks to bmanning for opening this bottle a ways back. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a nice dark brown with a bit of a tan head. Not too much retention or lacing. Nose brings a strong dose of smooth bourbon alongside some notes of vanilla and oak. A good amount of chocolate and a bit of dark fruits as well. The taste is really quite great with a lot of bourbon and a bit of sweetness. Good, full mouthfeel with a bit of nice heat. Drinks quite well and is really tasty.
