Poured into a pint glass.

4.0 A: Clear dark yellow color. Two and a half fingers of creamy/frothy off-white head. Retention is average and a decent amount of lacing is left behind.

3.5 S: Piney, floral and citrusy hops. Pine, grapefruit, and orange stick out the most. Also a touch of sugariness in there as well. Malts are bready and slightly biscuity. Not bad.

3.5 T: Pretty much exactly like the nose. Bready malts with a touch of caramel. Hops are piney with orange and grapefruit citrus.

4.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Very nice creaminess.

4.0 D: Good beer. I usually don't prefer bready IPAs, but the mouthfeel is so good that it brings up the beer as a whole.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #58 (November 2011):

LOOK: Hazed peach

SMELL: Herbal, minty, papaya, mango, doughy, alcohol

TASTE: Hoppy, tobacco, herbal, leafy, earthy, grassy, pulling, astringent, stone fruit, earthy, woody

We're not dead yet, actually just getting our hop fix. Excessive hopping is noticed. The palate does not get devastated by the bitterness, but it does get taken over by the massive amount of hop flavor, so much so that you should not expect to taste much after knocking this one back. A worthy hop bomb.

A: slightly hazy; burnt orange in color; <1 finger off white head that receded to a thick collar; nice lacing;

S: all hops; tropical fruit, floral, and a little pine;

T: mostly floral through mid-palate; at the finish, it's earthy, floral, piney, and assertively bitter;

M: medium bodied; moderately carbonated; lightly dry finish;

O: a true hop bomb in every sense;

"Enjoy me before" date of Feb. 2015, purchased at Sam's in Durham, NC.

This excellent brew deserves more love, so though I had sworn off reviewing I had to add a quick note:

Wonderful full-bodied IPA with complex array of notes and one of the best finishes of any beer I have ever had. One of those beers that is best from mid-palate to the finish. Highly recommended.

Death By Hops pours a hazy copper color with a small but lacing head. Big hoppy aroma, big bitter notes. Big hop flavors, bold malt backbone, big bitter aftertaste. Flatter body, but nice flavors. Overall its drinkable, flavorful, big bitterness.

Had on-tap at Barleycorn Asheville. Served in a pint glass.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains decently before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Resilient, randomly patterned lacing.

S- Big juicy hop aroma that's musty and dank. Slightly sweet smelling.

T- The hop flavor is decidedly grassy and not very in-your-face but the bitterness is definitely there and lingers a good while. Decent malt backbone to balance that's a bit bready and sweet. The ABV isn't incredibly noticeable.

M- Pretty sharp and dry with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- I wouldn't necessarily call this a "death by hops" beer but it's certainly assertive and the malt provides a near-perfect balance to the aggressive hop content.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: The beer pours a golden amber, nearly orange color with a thin white head forming at the top of the pour. A lot of lacing remains on the sides of the glass.

S: Citrus and pine hops dominate the nose with slight malt notes present as well.

T: Brief sweetness of orange peel and grapefruit as the beer hits the tongue. The sweetness quickly turns to hop bitterness and rounds into some maltiness towards the middle. Pine joins the bitterness towards the finish. The bitterness lingers in the mouth for some time after the sip.

M: This is a medium bodied beer with ample carbonation.

Overall, this is a good IIPA. The name of the beer says it all. It is hops, hops, and more hops. I would prefer there to be a little more of a malt presence and some more sweet citrus or pine in an IIPA, but I think the brewery was going for a hop bomb with this one. They succeeded. This is easily the hoppiest beer I have ever had, as the bitterness lingers for ages. All in all, it lacks some balance and complexity.

Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a finger and a half of creamy off white head. This beer has good retention and decent lacing.

Smell: Sweet but very hoppy. The sweetness reminds me of bitter citrus juice. The hops smell like the beer is quite fresh.

Taste: Bitter hops dominate the smell but there is enough malt to back it up. I would have liked the middle of the sip to be a bit lighter. The finish is bitter like grapefruit peel.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with carbonation on the mild side and a dry finish.

Overall: I'm enjoying the hop profile, but the heaviness of the bitter flavors was a bit much. This is a good DIPA, and I might have another given the chance.

Fellow BA (thanks Skuter) got this in a trade, and brought this to a recent tasting.

A: Poured from the 22oz bomber into a Bruery tulip glass. The beer pours a copper color, with a half inch of white head that quickly fades without deposting much in terms of lacing.

S: I pick up citrus scents of grapefruit, some floral hops, grass, and a mild earthy note.

T: Grapefruit again up front, with a little too sweet caramel malt background. Mild pine also comes through.

M: Lightly carbonated, and a little thin.

O: Not bad, glad I got to try it. It's a bit light for an Imperial IPA @ 7.00%. Admittedly though, with the large high quality, availability, and variety of IPA's, DIPA's, IIPA's in California, it's hard for me personally to be impressed, for what it's worth though, this was good, and certainly not average, in my humble opinion.

On tap at Duckworths in Charlotte.

Golden color with excellent clairty. Light white head, great lacing and decent retention.

Great hoppy aroma with notes of citrus and pine. Some undertones of honey and apple in the nose as well.

Wow! What a blast of hops. Initial and finishing bitterness is pretty intense. Getting past that bitterness is "fun". Citrus and strong pine flavors here.

Nearly perfect mouthfeel with great carbonation and excellent flow.

I could definitely drink a lot of this one and at 7% abv it wouldn't completely annihalate my soul. Although the hops would serve me a happy death!
