look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Appearance - The beer had a murky black color with a slight off white head.

Smell - In the nose, I detect raisins in dark chewy liquid form.

Taste - The beer has smooth chocolate, raisins, and just a hint of booze. There are also hints of tobacco and figs before more dark chocolate in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - As far as smoothness and balanced carbonation, this beer hits it out of the park.

Overall - For a non-BA stout, this beer is an excellent demonstration of the style.

Good sized head, but poor retention.

Tons of bourbon on the nose, along with chocolate and coffee. Nuts, oak, and toffee.

Wonderfully straight BBA stout on the palate. Chocolate and roasted barley, perfectly balanced bourbon and oak.

Wonderfully thick and creamy feel. Because of the bourbon, this comes across hot despite being only 8.5% ABV.

I opened a bottle of 2014 after drinking another BA Stout I picked up from a limited release event. The other stout was awesome and worthy of the hype it's getting currently. Then I opened this. It is every bit as good and I was very impressed. A solid, well executed brew with roasted malt/chocolate notes and taste. Then it has a very nice, slightly sweet finish. I was left wishing I had another bottle to share! If you see it, get it. Or better yet, get two and age one.

2013
22 oz
$?

Pours a deep.brown to black color with no head. Minor lacing on a sip.

Nose is dark fruit, oak, subtle bourbon, and a bit of malt.

Taste is bourbon, honey, oak, coffee, a bit of vanilla, and molasses.

Mouthful is medium to heavy and smooth. Carbonation is low. Finish is semi dry.

3+ years of aging has removed any and all hotness to this beer. It has changed into a strongly balanced bb stout that is really drinkable. Would recommend aging this for a couple of years.

Strong roasted malt and bourbon on the nose. A little vanilla and some very dark chocolate.

Pours dark as midnight in hell. Small tan head that disappears pretty quick.

Taste is complex and thick. Smoky vanilla, caramel and toffee. Sweet backend - molasses and dark fruit. Thick - almost syrupy.

Some heat in the throat.

Not much hop bitterness or presence. Almost like drinking sweet liquid smoke mixed with thick milk chocolate nougat.

Reminds me of Millers Toll. Super rich and complex beer.

I love this beer - but be careful, its rich like a chocolate cheese cake.

Almost too thick for me - but I love it. Feel like I need a shower for my beard after this one. Feels like it should have a higher ABV. At 8.5%, less alcohol than the thickness and complexity of the beer would suggest.

This was pretty nice, but fell short of being truly stellar. Very nice flavor, and the bourbon comes through strongly but has some astringency. The body was pretty thin with very minimal head. Overall nice but not my favorite

Ink black, obsidian pour. Angry reddish beige head of 1 finger, dwindling to a fingernail a little later.

Nose is really heavy on the bourbon, oaky sweetness, a hint of vanilla, some really charred malts, and light caramel.

Flavor is complex, starting off with a millisecond of lovely oats and chocolate, and then suddenly twisting into clear distilled alcohol, ethanol, and burnt malts. A hint of honey tea. Hits of caramel weave in and out. I'm not impressed. It's really a shame because I was expecting more subtlety with the barrel. Underneath the wave of ethanol and alcohol, I get some vanilla, anise, ground cinnamon, and oak character. It's kind of a rough sipper.

Feel is sticky, thick, sappy, hot, with a drying alcohol finish.

Overall, this is no slouch - but I feel it was way too boozy to enjoy even as a slow sipper. It's like drinking straight vodka and whiskey combined and chasing it with a sip of honey tea. I really hate giving hyped beers lower than average ratings, but I just couldn't jive with this one.

'16 version from 9/26/16 poured into a tulip glass. A dark black, solid, with brown highlights and a thin rim of tan lace. The smell is decadent. Bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, roasted grains, brown sugar. The taste is primarily bourbon, chocolate, anise, roasted grains and hints of almonds. Carbonation is medium low with a touch of sharpness on the finish. The feel is medium heavy and get a little sticky. Overall, a tasty stout , been impressed with OH's stouts so far.

Deep and robust but surpringly light bodied (thin) on the tongue. Sweet finish with fruit notes and light coffee. Lots of bourbon flavor with a dry stout finish.

S: Rich vanilla nose, deep velvety malt.

T: Vanilla, dark fruits, hint of bourbon on the very smooth finish.

M: Oilyness is very noticeable on the palate. Smooth, slick, very coating. Outstanding!

O: Very reminiscent of Kate the Great. Vanilla, rich boozy finish. I love this beer!

Thank you goingbrokeonbeer for this
22 oz bottle, dated 11/18/15, poured into a teku

A- Black with a two finger mocha head.

S- Roasted malts, coffee, honey, dark fruits, bourbon, some coffee.

T- Roasted coffee, dark fruits, dark chocolate, some honey, molasses, bourbon. Up front and the middle lean towards the sweet side, finish has a nice bitterness that really balances the beer.

M- Smooth, medium to full body.

O- I have been wanting to try this for for years and it lives up to the hype. Worth seeking out, huge flavors for be under 9% ABV.

Drank fresh (~6 months old). Rich dark chocolate, roasted grain, soy sauce, boozy bourbon all entice the nose and flatter the taste buds. An incredible nose with a really nice palate, smooth, round and complex. Delicious.

2015 vintage poured into a snifter
Pours pitch black with a thin, dark tan head that slowly dissipates leaving minimal lacing
Big barrel on the nose, hint of booziness, faint sweetness
Taste is coffee forward with waves of chocolate and walnuts that fade into bourbon without any bite but a bit of the honey is present at the end
Feel is a little thin for the style

S: big bourbon, some sweetness. More of dark fruit and molasses than the chocolate notes I look for.
T: very good. The bourbon is smooth, the dark fruit brings a sweetness, there are some chocolate notes.
F: super easy drinking, very smooth, medium thickness. Nice

Year-old 2015 version poured into a goblet.
Look - pitch black with no head to speak of. A very small layer of mocha-colored bubbles formed initially, but quickly disappeared.
Smell - boozy notes are pretty strong along with honey, chocolate, molasses, and vanilla.
Taste - chocolate, vanilla, honey, molasses, and slight notes of bitter coffee meld well in the flavor profile. There's also a good amount of booze that lingers in the aftertaste.
Feel - pretty low carbonation due to the aging process, but it is definitely not flat. It maintains a slightly chewy body and has a fantastic finish.
Overall, this beer has an insane amount of complexity, especially considering the low ABV.

Look - Pitch black and oily, no carbonation and no head at all.

Smell - What a smell! Has a nice roasty coffee smell that hits you immediately. Definitely on the sweeter side; molasses, brown sugar, malts, honey, vanilla, bourbon, and all come together to create an incredible smell. Surprisingly, very mild dark chocolate scent, Unlike most reviewers who seemed to sense this strongly.

Taste - Much roast-ier than the smell, sets a great base for a rich, sweet beer. Bitter chocolate, oak, bourbon and some vanilla and honey dominate this beer. Aftertaste of coffee, not the greatest to me, tastes like *old* coffee.

Feel - Least favorite part of this beer, it seems like a contradiction to me... It's almost as if it's a mixture of oil and some water, it hits you thick, but once you swallow, I realized it was much thinner than I originally expected.

Overall - Excellence upfront, results in average results on the back end... but you get a beer for what it gives you overall, and this beer's positives definitely outweigh the negatives.

Reviewed from a 22 oz bottle.

L - Super dark brown with maybe some ruby red in the thin line along the glass that light penetrates. Initially a fine dark tan head that fades to almost nothing. A tiny whisp of lacing.

S - Incredibly complex nose has chocolate, espresso, bourbon whiskey, vanilla, plums.

T - Depth of flavor is unbelievable, especially in an imperial stout of relatively low ABV (for the style). Coffee, chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, oak all swirl about and last forever in the finish.

F - Thick body and low but creamy carbonation seem appropriate to the experience. Moderate to high alcohol presence fits in well. Strong hops blends with the roasted coffee-like bitterness.

O - This is a great example of the style. Barrel aging mellows and adds complexity to a great imperial stout.

Poured into a coupla tulip glasses, 11/18/2015 batch date:

Appearance: pours super dark brown, basically black in color with a thick and fluffy espresso-colored head. Head sticks around with plenty of retention, leaving spotty lacing. Brew looks semi-syrupy on the pour.

Aroma: potent notes of dark chocolate, wood, and lots of barrel character. No heat at all, and the barrel is nice and soft, lending wood, char, and some mild vanilla.

Taste: WOW. First beer I've ever had from Olde Hickory, but this was a treat. For an 8.5% stout, I don't know how this much flavor was possible. Layer upon layer of decadence, in the form of roasty dark coffee and chocolate, as well as solid barrel notes the whole way through. No booziness at all. Light vanilla, some smoky wood characteristics. This is the real deal.

Feel: again, how this full a body and viscosity is possible at just 8.5% is crazy.

Overall: this was a big surprise, as this bottle was an extra, but it is a fantastic beer. I'd drink this stout any day of the week.

Looks very nice with a black, opaque body and deep copper / brown head that leaves behind just enough lacing to look pretty involved.

There is a great nose to this, which is best described as a blend of Bavarian creme and that fancy, rich, subtle European chocolate. Like Toblerone are along those lines.

Taste is equally fun, as this may be the most well balanced BA'd RIS I've ever had. Fun chocolate, subtle bourbon and a little coffee in the finish. You certainly get the barrel, but it's not overpowering and does not contribute any sort of astringent element to a barely noticeable heat.

Bottle dated 11/18/2015. Poured into pint glass. It pours jet black with a foamy, mocha-colored head and lacing. It's a very aromatic stout with a strong fragrance of bourbon, Cocoa, toffee, and coffee. The smell is very inviting! The first taste encountered is the bourbon; it's strong but smooth and mellow. It is followed by honey, toffee, milk chocolate, coffee, and a hint of dark fruit. It's absolutely decadent; one of the best BA stouts I've ever had. What is really impressive is the mouth feel. It's rich and creamy as expected but with an ABV of 8.5% it's not overpowering like BCBS or KBS. It might be a little less viscous than the latter but the flavor is right with them. Overall, I'm thrilled to be able to try this. It is a world-class BA Imperial Stout that is right up there with the kings of the style.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter. 2014 vintage.

A: Pours get black with a mocha head that pops up after the fact and quickly dissipates into a slim ring. A tiny bit of uniform lacing.

S: Lots going on. Chocolate, coffee, a little bourbon, as well as notes of honey, hazelnut and vanilla bean.

T: Smooth dark chocolate and bourbon up front with a touch of honey and graham cracker on the back end. A pleasant roasty bitterness on the back end with the chocolate.

M: Smooth as glass with tiny carbs up front, it glides across the palate like silk. Finishes clean with almost no alcohol warming.

O: Absolutely fantastic. I don't know what it tastes like the day after bottling, but the age on this one couldn't have hurt. It's one of the more delicious stouts I've had in a while. Cheers!

Pours - Jet black with thick mocha head, excellent lacing.

Smell - There is a big honey and dark bitter chocolate smell, the bourbon also stands out. Oak smell as well as a touch of vanilla.

Taste - The honey and bitter chocolate take over the taste, the bourbon is also prominent. The taste is very powerful and all of the ingredients stand out it is very well balanced.

Feel - Heavy rich feel, well carbonated. Sightly dry on the end.

Overall - This beer tastes as described, i am not sure if I was expecting more from what I have heard about this but wile it was good it did not live up to what I was expecting. Could be my fault from what I was expecting.

Jet black with minimal head. Smell and taste are pure and intense bourbon, vanilla and chocolate. Definitely reminds me of BCBS but it's crazy that this is just 8.5ABV, it tastes and feels like a much, much bigger stout. This has got to be the best BB stout I've had at this low of an ABV.
