An aggressive pour yields close to a finger of extremely dark brown foam, the surface scattered with larger bubbles, retention is adequate for what’s there, the lacing is thin and wispy. The liquid is jet black, completely impenetrable, looks clean and has some shine to it, impossible to see any bubbles. The nose is akin to getting slugged in the jaw, leaps right at you with crushed raspberries, coconut, butterscotch, graham cracker, coffee ice cream, the honey seems folded into the rest, as it settles in you get more roast as well as grassiness, keeps the booziness in check, likely deserves to get closer to room temperature to really let the aromas release. Full-bodied, were it not for the steady prickle provided by the carbonation it would flatten the palate. The cereal grains and breadiness show stronger here, as does spiced orange peel and coffee to mocha roast. The butterscotch knits in well and the honey enunciates more clearly, particularly through the finish. Same raspberry fruit with cherry accents. Some mesquite qualities but the oak barrel is well integrated and not insipidly dominating. The finish is quite extended but not clumsily so. If you like big, flavored stouts this is an impressive choice. (Bottled 10/13/2015)

Perfectly balanced stout. The honey or raspberry flavor is present but not overpowering, and the bourbon aging was perfectly done to allow for the flavor of the stout to still maintain center stage. Very well done

Poured at 48°F from a 22oz bottle (bottling date 04Nov14) into a Spiegelau Stout glass. Allowed to warm up to 50°F before reviewing. Consumed on 29May16.
LOOK: Two fingers worth of cinnamon colored foam is formed after pouring. At one and half minutes, the foam finally changed color to khaki. Dissipation finally occurs at the three minute mark when only half a fingers worth has disappeared. Black in color with an orange luster. An abundance of tiny rising bubbles explains why the head is so obstinate. Lacing is high in quantity and both thick and very thick.
SMELL: To my surprise, strong raspberry aromas are immediately noticed from this year and a half old brew. The raspberry aromas lean more towards the tart side with a fair amount of sweetness. Backing those up are mild aromas of sweet chocolate and sweet coffee; subtle honey, oak, and vanilla aromas; and hints of bourbon.
TASTE: Strong tart raspberry and sweet chocolate flavors entangle and create a wonderfully sour and sweet initial flavor. Mild coffee and subtle honey flavors flow in right after as raspberry flavors develop a balancing berry sweetness. Subtle vanilla and oak flavors along with hints of bitter roasted malts and bourbon finish off the taste theatrical as raspberry and coffee flavors maintain, but honey flavors grow stronger and chocolate flavors fade to mild.
FEEL: This is such a thick and full-bodied beer. I feel like I'm drinking syrup and I love it. Carbonation is low. This goes down insanely smooth while also clinging to the back of the throat like syrup. A mild and welcoming alcoholic warmth can be felt as it goes down the throat.
NOTE: I can't imagine how much more of a raspberry bomb this would have been if it was fresh. The raspberry flavors were approaching the threshold of pure domination, which would have been terrible. This was just the right amount. I was disappointed that the bourbon was hardly existent. With all that being said, this was quite a tasty treat.

I liked it a lot. I normally do not go for chocolate and fruit together because one or both can taste artificial, but both come through nicely. A great beer.
