Deep clear ruby red/brown with little to no head. Tangy nose with some hoppiness and an element of rich fruit but not a lot of oomph. Quite powerful taste, with burnt vine fruits and a touch of dense sweetness and treacle alongside the bitterness and malt. A metallic or possibly smoky background flavour.

Review from notes. Enjoyed while on vacation in the UK. 500 ml bottle served cold(ish) into a pint glass. Best before March 31, 2018

Appearance - A dark brown colored beer is poured with ruby hues. Good clarity and a half finger of soapy and long lasting off-white head is poured. Modest retention and not a ton of lacing.

Smell - Very fruity with loads of dark fruits and cherries especially. Some light spices and a healthy malt grain bill with some complexities in behind.

Taste - Minerally and grainy initially with some boozy heat. Traces of cardamom and cinnamon. Some stone fruit and figs accompanying and a touch of metallicness. Fairly bitter throughout.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and light bodied for a bigger ESB. Carbonation is appropriately reasonably light.

Overall - A pretty damn good ESB that lives up to expectations. Only complaint is that after smelling the beer the flavors didn't quite match up with what the nostrils sensed. Still damn good.

From Hipercor. In Ikea's pint glass. Dinner at Antonia's house. With sausages + omelette. It has some odd herbal/metallic notes and a noticeable alcohol that at first dissapoints a lot but with time you get used to it and improves

The appearance is a deep reddish brown with a minimal head. Its aroma is not very potent, but has the sweet toffee, fig and yeasty quality that makes a good British ale my favorite. Its rather sweet tasting, with pronounced biscuit, bread, malty tones. Its quite rich I would add, and with the (unusually) high alcohol content, not an ideal session beer. But its very impressive any way you look at it.

Deep copper colour. Aroma is warm, fruity and very inviting. Raisins, chocolate, caramel aroma. Tastes of chocolate, raisins, bit of alcohol warmth but not to overpowering. Great beer, a classic.

I surmise this is something of a classic... having been made since 1972.
It is fruity and tangy and malty. Balanced.

Listed in the "1001" beers, it should be there.
MJ's 1999 edition gave it 3 of 4 stars and said "blends hoppy dryness and hessian notes with oily, treacly maltiness.
