Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

A: Dark amber with a below average, off-white head. A good amount of carbonation leaves some bubbles clinging to the side of the glass. A little bit of lacing but it dissipates quickly.

S: The aroma is not too strong, but there is a solid smell of sweet malt and dark fruit, as well as a tiny whiff of bitter chocolate.

T: Caramel sweetness up front quickly gives way to a strong, bitter acidity. Almost metallic in nature. If you search through it there are some nice raisin and plumb notes in the back. Still, the unpleasant acidity dominates the aftertaste and lingers on the palette.

M: Carbonation gives a nice tingle on the first few sips. After it settles down the body is drinkable without being too light for a winter beer. Not as hearty as other seasonals however.

Overall: It might just be me, or the bottle that I purchased, but I really can't get past the acidic bitterness, and it completely ruins what could have otherwise been a serviceable beer.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark brown/copper colour with a nice long lasting head.

Smells like malts and hops and some slight spices.

Tastes like a quite malty bitter with a fair bit of dull spice. Not too inspiring.

Overall quite a nice fairly sweet bitter but not too interesting.

Poured into a dimpled handled pint pot to reveal a dark brown ale with reddish hues and big tan foamy head.

The Aroma thrown up is wonderful if slightly muted brambles, molasses and malt.
The taste is just as rich.
MMMmmmm Fruity but not overly sweet roasted then finishing with toffee and spice and a slightly nutty aspect with a bitter hop twang.

Really good carbonation and a good solid mouthfeel makes this a real surprise, wasn't expecting much from this and have been vey much pleasantly surprised.

Pours a ruby brown with tight off white head that fades to speckles. Dried apricot, Earl Grey tea and powdered cocoa on the nose. Dark ginger cake malts with some kola and cocoa bean, followed by spicy hop bite. Medium to full body and tight finish.

Nothing complex but the right amount of flavor plus light and low ABV to make drinkable. Knock these back on Christmas day!

Purchased at the Marks & Spencer, this is a "Seasonal Guest" beer "brewed exclusively" for M&S; coming in a 500ml brown bottle, not bottle-conditioned. BB 08/2010, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. NOTE: brewed with four different East Anglian malts (including dark chocolate malts), Fuggles and Boadicea hops.

A: pours a dark copper-ish hue with moderate input of medium-big sized bubbles, topped with a 1.5cm thick dark beige fluffy head settling slowly to a thin blanket.
S: lightly berry/current-ish fruity and caramely-malty at the same time, as well as a tad metallic (weird...); a swirl brings up the unique aromatic estery+malty note most pronounced in Adnams Bitter and Broadside (cask-version), which comes more as an accompaniment here.
T: soothing & light-flavoured, and, surprise surprise, Adnams Bitter's characters are well reproduced/represented here - the dark-fruity malts, bitter-sweet caramel and hints of sweet mashed red beans are followed by a metallic touch, Fuggles hoppiness and a lovely tea-ish spicy-bitter edge; the finish is packed with lingering yeasty hints as specified on the nose, plus mild malt aroma and an understated flow of bitterness intensifying patiently, by stealth.
M&D: the carbonation is not TOO lively, but it still tastes a bit spritzy initially; this light+ bodied ale is quite like Adnams Bitter on cask with an additional input of caramely hints maybe from the "Dark Chocolate Malts", as specified on the label. However, the extra metallic touch and the resemblance of Adnams Bitter don't actually help with the overall drinkability - quite frankly, I'd go for the Bitter on cask where possible...
