A 2012 bottle.Pours into a small tulip glass a deep mahagony with a ruby hue, a half finger off white head atop.Deeply fruit in the nose along with some cake and sweet alcohol.Malty to the hilt on the palate.Dark fruit and caramel sweetness on the palate, the alcohol lends more sweetness,it's a sipper.I like this beer, take it for what it is,a English malty sipper.Great beer.

11.2 ounce bottle into a snifter. 2012 edition- is there any other? Hmmm... Had 5/11/17.

Pours dark, somewhat opaque, with not much of a head and very spotty lacing. Aromas of malt, caramel, raisins. Some yeast, some coffee, light dates. The taste is also malt forward, then caramel, figs, dates, some plums, less coffee than the nose, light chocolate, light bitterness on the finish. Smooth, a decent medium body, well carbonated.

This is nice, nothing special. Which is a consideration because the price point was certainly high. Not bad, but not worth a purchase, if you see it.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle, from 2012. Has a damn near black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grapes, figs, brown sugar. Taste is boozy, oak, grapes, some plums, alcohol not hidden at all. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

This is a 2012 bottle I bought last summer in Dayton, Ohio. Pours super black with a relaxed head, which isn't surprising in a five year old barleywine. The nose is exquisite, with leather, grapeskin, raisins, and and overall essence of aged wood and fine liqueur

Thick but still delicate in texture. Really brings the wood, so to speak, and is a little raw early in the taste. A smoothness takes over in the finish, which is long and tasty. Plenty of alcohol in the background but it never comes to the fore. Really fine example of the style.

Poured from a 2012 reserve bottle into the test glass.
A - Dark cedar colored, minimal carbonation works its way topside, a thin ring of evidence is proof.
S - Raisin, fig, dark tobacco, toffee and molasses start things off. a bit of dark wood and wet earth.
T - Cigar wrap, brown sugar, caramel, fig pudding. Rich to say the least
M - Slick in body, full palate coating, the swath that's cut across the palate is huge and largely sweet, a nice dry finish is a bit of a surprise.
O - A classic in structure and feel. worth seeking out and savoring.

Adnams Tally-Ho Reserve 11.2 oz bottled 2012 9% ABV. This is the best thing to hit this Old Tom glass in a very long time. The pour is murky, coffee brown with minimal tan head. Fades to a ring with impressive lacing for a 5 year old ale. Smells of toffee, dark brown sugar and dark fruit. Taste follows with balanced sweet and bitter working together perfectly. Mouthfeel is great with good carbonation, no floaties and full, soft feel. Overall, excellent. I was a little worried because my "cellar" conditions are not perfect. I have learned the hard way that 3 years is about as long as I can hang on to most things. This is going on the repeat buy list.

The biggest part of the scent of this beer is malt, along with other fruits like cherry. Taste is quite a bit boozy to me-- but that should not be a big surprise as the beer is listed at 9%. After the initial alcohol taste, cherry, molasses, and plums come into play, and the beer gets less intense as the taste goes on. Beer finishes somewhat smooth, with a cherry aftertaste. Carbonation is light overall.

I don't know if I will get another of these in the future. The beer seemed to be like a less- composed example of a Belgian Tripel or Quad to me, which I would rather have either of these beer types. However, the 9% of Alcohol is certainly a nice reward for drinking a couple of these. Not a terrible beer, but there are better choices than this one for me.

2012 Vintage.

Pours a deep burgundy tinged brown. Appears sort of clear when held to light but there is a lot of white flecks floating in the beer. Some rather large. Not much of a head but some tan foam is noted ringing the outside of the beer.

Smell has notes of sugar, candied cherries, molasses, raisins, rich roasted malt, a touch like a sherry or port to the nose. Smells like this is going to be pretty sweet.

Taste is remarkably dry which frames the flavors. Its very crisp with some strong grape and sherry like notes initially. Flavors mellow in the mouth leaving an oaky flavor touched with dark fruits, raisins, and a biscuit malt backbone. Slight hoppy bitterness in the finish provide balance without becoming districting. Whats impressive is how *not* sweet the beer is given the nose seems to imply a strong sweetness.

Feel has medium carbonation providing a prickly feeling on the tongue initially. Very dry on the mouth and aftertaste. Very smooth.

Overall a nice English barley wine. The flavor on this is really quite nice.
