L - Dark brown, maybe a hint of red. Hard to tell, but appears clear. Thin, light brown, persistent head.
S - Light roasted malts. Light citrusy hops.
T - Rich dark malts. Chocolate, toast, dark fruit, resin. Nice balance with a good dose of citrusy hops.

L: Pours deep dark brown under a clingy 1” tan foam cap with a fine bead that takes 3 minutes to collapse into a thick film. The lace is splotchy and quickly disappears. S: Dark roast, some floral and light fruit aromas. T: Tastes like a dry porter with a moderate hop accent. Has a lingering citrus rind bitter poke on the finish. No harsh or burnt roast flavors, traces of coffee but the bitterness is predominantly hop driven F: Very creamy texture, soft palate, medium body, no warming, moderate carbonation with faint grainy astringency on the finish. O: Drinks like a hoppy dry porter.

Thanks to Jeff for this one. 12oz. bottle into a Darkness snifter. I'm not a fan of Black IPAs in general but there have been a couple of hits.....

Tall pour yields a .5 finger cream colored head with moderate retention. Beer is pitch black but thin. Lacing is stringy but minimal with decent stick. Average.

Nose is booze, sweet prunes, purple grapes, coca cola, a bit of roast, and a touch of smoke. Smells like a young imperial stout.

Opens roasty dark fruit. Hints of purple grapes, chocolate, smoke and a roasty, grainy hop bitterness. Bitter chocolate and coarse cocoa powder in the middle with a slightly fudge-y end. Finishes coarse roast and grassy hop bitterness with a lingering, oily roasted malt. Decent but like most Black IPAs, this one suffers from a conflict of flavor profiles.

Light to medium bodied with moderate to low carbonation. Smooth and foamy in the mouth and goes down rich and caressing. Slightly boozy finish with a sweet, sticky, lingering aftertaste. Nice.

A really good attempt but this again, just doesn't do it for me. If your Black IPA isn't mostly imperial stout-like, I most likely won't like it. That's not to say the beer is bad... great balanced between roast, smoke and a dark fruit hop bitterness. But the flavor combination still just doesn't work for me.

12oz bottle from JustDoIt1234 (thanks!). No bottling date. Served in a goblet.

Pours a deep, near-black brown with mahogany highlights at the edges and a finger and a half cap of khaki foam. The lingering wide collar deposits some large sheets of lace on the way down.

Smells sweeter than expected. Sugar, burnt caramel, chocolate and a blend of floral and piney hops.

The taste brings in some considerable bitterness to balance those sugars I smelled. Black coffee, dark chocolate, subdued pine, flower petals, burnt caramel, some pepper-like spice and a bit of a booze bite. The hops have a tough time competing with the heavy roast and copious malt sugars.

The body is medium and borderline creamy with moderate carbonation. Lingering, bitter finish fueled by notes of char, floral hops and burnt caramel latte.

Fatal Attraction is a decent black ale. It was a strange juxtaposition to smell the sugary sweetness while being whalloped by roasty, hoppy bitterness and that is what ends up setting this apart. Certainly an acceptable choice if you're craving a roasty hoppy beer.

poured 12oz bottle into snifter.

A - Very dark almost black brown with a sandy 2 finger head. Retention is excellent and leaves a thin cap for the session. Lacing is light and webbed on the glass.

S - Roasted, rich malts culminate into a bitter chocolate and coffee aroma. But not before the hops take over and bring in a biting pine resin and citrus aroma. Some toasted grains add to the smell.

T - Starts off with a deep milk chocolate, that moves to bitter chocolate then adds a touch of coffee. Caramel and cream flavors are also present. The hops come in and assault the palate with biting pine and some citrus. It's not very juicy, but more bitter on the finish.

M - Medium bodied, appropriately carbonated. Creamy, but leaves a bitter feel on the tongue.

O - This is solid and delicious. I would like to compare it to a FIrestone Wooky, because I have a feeling it would be similar.
