A - Dark brown, with a slight gray cast, largely opaque, with a huge tan head that is very slow to fade and some lacing trace down the glass.

S - Wood and alcohol nose from the barrel, I assume. Slightly acidic nose, but a subtle malt presence lies beneath.

T - The malt comes forward when you take a drink, showing that it is indeed primarily a brown ale, albeit one which includes wood and a mild booziness.

M - Mild carbonation, perhaps a bit too mild. Almost no bitterness, and a light feel so this is easy tipper.

O - With such a mild ABV for a barrel aged brew (at least partially), the main knock here is that it is not terribly complex, sort of a two-note of malt and barrel. The barrel is out front in the nose, the malt in the taste. This was a go-to brew for me for several years, and I still come back, though I've found other browns that satisfy and offer greater depth.

Appearance: This beer pours a deep a brown color and is topped with light tan colored head that tends to hang around quite a ways down the glass.
Smell: This is a quite a tasty smelling brew it has a good malt aroma with hints of the bourbon aging.
Taste: Tasting this beer has my mouth watering, it has a good malt presence in the foreground and good bourbon flavors in the background to follow up the malt.
Mouthfeel: This tends to be a bit on the thin side compared to others I have had but still a good version of a brown ale.

12 oz bottle served in a Hair of the Dog tulip.

A: Clean brown/copper color minimal head and lacing.

S: Bourbon coming through as it warms with a hint of esters. Vanilla and oak also present

T: Toffee and vanilla, decent ammount of bourbon oak coming though, not overpowering but clearly present. Rich toasted malts as you would expect from a brown ale.

M: Average/medium mouthfeel. not really noticable but accurate for the style.

O: Pretty good but nothing incredible, seemed fairly well executed but I think the style just isn't a great fit for a bourbon barrel. I would drink it again.

Bottled on 3/17/13.

Appearance: Hazy medium brown with a thin light tan head.

Aroma: Typical toasty malts with a touch of grassy hops. Touch of hazelnut coffee.

Taste: Starts with a grassy hop character like in the aroma. It brings a nice lightness to the palate while being complimented beneath by very lightly toasted amber and caramel flavors. Finish gives richer caramel and a very slight bourbon flavor. Rocky's Revenge is only partially aged in bourbon barrels so the oaky bourbon flavor is understandably faint. The aftertaste is the most flavorful part of the experience, giving lots of nutty malt flavor and some hints of coffee and bourbon. All in all it seems a tad on the light side for a 6% ABV beer but not hugely so.

Mouthfeel: Closer to thin than medium in body with excessive carbonation. Fairly drinkable and probably sessionable for fans of the style.

Final Thoughts: Yet another interesting beer from a brewery I'm just beginning to discover. Tyranena never ceases to intrigue with their offerings. Would I drink it again? Maybe on-tap.

A: Dark copper hue with a thin half-inch head but steady head and okay lacing

S: Lots of bready, toffee, and caramel malts but pretty simple and subdued all around; perhaps a hint of bourbon but that may just be an effect of the power of suggestion

T: The bourbon is actually prevalent in the flavors and really plays well off the slightly sweet bready malts; really quite balanced and tasty

F: Creamy, medium body that is even slightly chewy on the finish

O: A subtle bourbon beer and one that's perfect for enjoying a couple of pints of--which is different for a bourbon-forward beer; the flavors complement each other nicely--nice beer

Tasted in a snifter from a 12 oz bottle on August 1, 2013. This is a beer I revisit at least once a year because the barrel aging process yields slightly different results from batch to batch. Recommended.

Pours a huge, dense, off-white head that has great persistence. Initial aroma is floral hops with a distinct wood and oak notes; bright and floral as the head settles. Deep burnt umber color. Starts with a nice mix of toasted malt, floral hops, and bitterness. Good amount of metallic as things mellow, then notes of oak and wood come forward from the shadows. Finish is metallic hops and toasted malt with lingering complexity of oak wood.

There are some really great things going on here, but there's also just too much of a metallic presence coming in and out to allow this to reach its full potential. If the metallic aspect were gone, this would get a score bump of a full point.
