Another gift from a friend that make an annual pilgrimage to WI.

A: A light cooper colored beer with an orange hue. Produces a good head stand on pour. The off-white head is made of cream bubbles with a decent retention time when given a somewhat aggressive pour.

S: A medium strength aroma of crystal malt and citrus hops. There is a moderate fruit ester and a faint diacetyl making me think the yeast is more English than American.

T: A medium-strong citrus hops flavor and a medium-strong hops bitterness along with a medium malt sweetness dominate. There is a far amount of orange esters that seem part hop part yeast derived. The balance is fairly bitter. The finish is off-dry with an aftertaste of oranges and hops bitterness.

M: A medium bodied beer with a medium-strong carbonation. Medium creaminess.

O: A decent IPA with a good balance of hops and malts hat isn't overly bitter, not that it would be bad thing. There

This was purchased for me at the Chicago South Loop Binny's by my good friend Brian. He is a fan and wanted me to try it.

A: Medum amber color with a slight haze. Lots of small rising bubbles. Big two finger craggy off-white head. Good head retention. Decent spotty lacing.

S: Marvelous smell. Seems like grapefruit, has some pine to it but then there is an oily citrus peel smell that washes over it all. Really nicely done.

T: Some maltiness in the front with a bit of a pine bite. The lemony citrus hop floods your palate in the middle and the finish falls back into a more aggressive grassy pine. Really nice progression. You have to like the heavy citrus to appreciate this brew.

M: Light medium body. Medium carbonation which is nicely done and gentle on the palate. The combination of the strong oily citrus wash and pine bite makes it feel really clean and fresh in the mouth - really drinkable stuff.

D: I like that this IPA is trying to carve out a slightly individual position for itself. I want some IPA's out there with a varied profile. Different horses for different courses. I can see being in the mood for one of these. Well played Tyranena.

2009 Release:
Amber/orange color with lots of haze and particulate probably from the orange peel. Blasts of citrus / grapefruity hop tones with a sweet caramel backing. Orange is quite prevalent as well.

Smooth caramel enhanced malts upfront immediately met by bold citrus, grapefruit and pine hop flavors. Sweet orange peel kicks in and adds a tasty twist to the brew. Flows down with solid bitterness and a great melding of flavors.

Creamy, smooth, great body and easy to drink. As tasty as last year with even a bit more of the orange peel coming through. Well worth tracking down.

2008 Initial Release:
Pours into my glass a clear amber orange/red with a thick creamy off white head that leaves big patches of lacing on the glass. Aromas start with sweet caramel malt upfront that is doused in thick, resious citric hop oils. Somewhat piney with orange zest in the background. Quite fruity, the hops run the show here.

First sip brings a creamy sweet caramel, toasty malt upfront that quickly moves into a blast of citrusy hoppiness. Pungent hop oils roll across the tongue with pine resin notes intermingled. Quite fruity in the middle with orange zest accents. Finishes slightly dry with a solid bitterness and a mild orange aftertaste.
Tasty IPA.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a solid creaminess. Goes down smoothly and easily. This is a tasty IPA that would be great on the beach on a hot summer day. Overall, the orange peel is mellow but gives it an interesting twist. In the end, a solid, hoppy IPA that is not groundbreaking, but is quite enjoyable.

Bottled 4/28/11; consumed 8/29/11

A - Pours a hazy orange with lots of suspended material. Can't tell if it is just yeast or if here is some orange peel as well. One finger of tan head doesn't persist long but leaves some nice lacing.

S - Very prominant orange aroma alojwith some other citrus hops. Don't really get much more than that, but it is pleasant.

T - Mostly citrus hop bitterness, along wit some lingering orange peel. Hops are still pretty prominant after four months. Not too much of a malt backbone, but there is some balance.

M - Medium mouthfeel with a bit of an oily feel.

O - Overall a nice IPA. The orange peel gives a nice alternative citrus profile to many other IPAs. I would get this again.

What a pleasure. This is an especially tasty beer if drank immediately following a crisper IPA like Two-Hearted (imo).

Pours a nice orangish, amber body with a nice fluffy white head atop.

Aroma is really remarkable. I must've swished & swirled, sniffed and sipped this for 45 minutes. A little caramel-y, but a great citrus punch. A bit from the hops and a bit from the peel, I suspect. Exceptional aromatic characters.

Taste is nearly equal to the aroma. Nice, bitey hops with a great citrus backbone and an especially nice orange/citrus finish. Very flavorful, but not overpoweringly so. A slight alcohol sideline.

Drinkable to an extent. I don't see myself drinking more than one or two of these. My preferred recipe is a pair of Bell's Two Hearted followed by a nice leisurely pull on a pint of Scurvy. A lovely combination and one I'll return to for as long as I can procure more this lovely brew. Top notch stuff.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head that goes quick, low carbonation, orange-brown in color, clear

Smell: bread, slight caramel and floral hops

Taste: caramel and bread in the start followed by bitter citrus and orange hops with the hops drying in the end

Mouthfeel: sweet start with a bitter body and less bitter finish, dry end, medium carbonation, heavy bodied

Overall: Really surprised and impressed with how heavy bodied this one is. This one is solid. One per sitting, but I would pick this up if it were in my area.

Beautiful amber color with an off-white head that has excellent lacing and retention. Smells of grapefruit, pine sap, oranges, and some other citrus. Taste is of pine sap, oranges, grapefruit, peaches, and some caramel for balance, even though hops are still dominant. Medium body with a little less than medium carbonation. I hope they brew this one again. So tasty and drinkable.

Thanks to Rblaszak for sending me this bottle.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the orange peel with some biscuit malt mixed in. The beer smells fairly sweet and syrupy, which is a little bit surprising.

The flavor is more what I expected. I get a lot of bitter orange peel notes with a little bit of lemon mixed in as well. The bitterness is low to medium and is countered with some biscuit malt notes.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: Orange/amber color with about a fingers worth of head that sticks around the whole time. Leaves some nice lacing around the glass
S: Some grapefruity hops, very slight pine smell and a hint of that orange peel they talk about.
T: Nice hope flavor and the hint of orange that follows is perfect. Not too strong but you can tell it's there. Very refreshing.
M: Medium bodied with little bit of carbonation. Goes down smooth.
D: Wow, I'm really enjoying this. At 6.5% it's not too strong so I could see myself having a few of these at a time.

Had on tap at the Pig & Fiddle. L: It pours copper gold under a 1” dense sudsy cream colored foam collar. S: Rich citrus aromas. T: A malty attack with citrus from the fermentation, from the hops and what tastes like added citrus. The three different sources of citrus enter the palate at different points adding depth and interest. F: Medium body and carbonation. O: A refreshing, citrusy IPA.

Man, what a strange trip this beer was. Great appearance, the top half was a lot of orange colored clarity, but the back end was all kinds of orange pulp like in some orange juice. Definitely unique.

Aroma was macro-esque to say the least. I really smelled corn, not orange. Taste, no hop blast as advertised on the bottle. Very disappointing initially. As you got more of the orange pulp in your mouth, it rapidly improved. I guess you should swirl this like you would if you like Belgian yeast or something. Bitter, yes, hoppy, not as much. I think a double dosing of dry hopping with this orange addition would be interesting. Or maybe this stuff was that good and I just waited too long to drink it.

Of course, at only $2 it was an easy choice to check out. A good beer, could be great with some minor tweaking. And that aroma, jeez.

My first Chicago purchase of Tyranena!

Enjoyed a pint whilst on the patio grilling up some hot links.

Pours a nice golden orange with a frothy head that leaves some lacing. Huge orange everywhere! In the nose and on the tongue.

While orange peels are the main event, there is plenty of other citrus notes nestled in with some pine. There are also some malty undertones that balance out this huge IPA. A complete pleasure to drink from start to finish.

Had the scurvy on tap at stub and herbs tonight. A- clear orange amber in color. decent head with small retention, nice lacing. The beer smells mostly of Hops, mainly hop resin as far as I can tell. I kept searching for the citrus hops but found only piney hops. The taste was lacking in my opinion, too one dimensional. The beer tastes identical to the way it smells and it just kinda disappoints. Mouth is just fair not to heavy but thicker than I like, nice dry finish though. Very drinkable not a bad beer overall but I wasn't overly impressed.

(Served in a stemmed pint glass)

A- This beer pours a clear deep orange body with a big carbonation of large bubbles. There is a thick bubbly antique white head that last for about 1/2 of the beer.

S- The faint hint of dried orange peel is quickly overtaken by juicy citrus hops aroma with a soft wet pale malt note in the background.

T- The soft dry pale malt flavor is fresh with just a touch of sweetness to it. The finish is a citrus and pungent hop blend that is a bit softer than the big hop bitterness that lingers on the tongue for a moment.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a fizzy finish that is crisp.

D- This beer is a nice IPA but I don't know if I would have tasted any orange peel if it wasn't printed on the label. I'm surprised this was a brewer's gone wild beer and not just a year round offering.

12oz. stubby brown bottle with a twist off cap, purchased at Zipp's(I think), poured into an imperial pint. No dating.

A: Pours a fire orange with a nice glowing haze. 1 1/2 fingers of bone white head forms and holds nicely. Some lacing.

S: Aroma rushes from the bottle as I twist off the cap. Nice citrus that gets pushed aside by the massive pine, that gets stepped over by the immense, thick and sticky hop resins and oils. Damn near smells fresh hopped. Zesty spices compliment and a peppery, maybe scottish spiked, malt base adds balance and depth.

T/M: Nice bitterness level. The hops are dead on the nose but more to an imperial level. Same with the malts, with added caramel and scottish styling making it an imperial red, IMHO. Malts are very sweet, caramel filled, and with a thickness akin to an imperial red/amber. Body is medium full and a bit chewy. Long lasting bitterness in the finish with a bit of present alcohol.

D: I'm sure ABV is decently high and the immensity of the brew certainly brings down the drinkability a bit. However, it's unique and very tasty so I don't want to stop drinking. It actually makes me wonder what an imperial Furious would taste like.
