BOTTLE: 2015 vintage. 12 fl oz. Brown glass. Branded twist-off crown cap.

7.50% ABV. "Ale brewed with pumpkin and spices."

Served cold into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

HEAD: Pale khaki colour. Fizzy. Not too frothy or creamy, but it's robust enough. Retention is average - ~2 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Vibrant auburn. Translucent and semitransparent. Ample yeast particulate is plainly visible floating within, giving it a lively appearance.

Appears well-carbonated.

It's a nice look for a pumpkin ale, but lacks any unique or special characteristics.

AROMA: Autumnal spice marries well to the pumpkin notes. Cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, cassia.

The cinnamon/cassia amplifies the perceived sweetness of the brew. Malt backbone is lovely, with rich caramel malts and clean Munich malts letting the spices and pumpkin shine. Apparently this was also brewed with roasted malt, but none is overt. A hint of faint floral hop character rounds out this seemingly impeccably balanced ale.

Evokes pumpkin expressively and authentically, with a spice profile that doesn't eclipse it. So many pumpkin ales fail to deliver basic pumpkin, drowning the drinker in spices, but this seems even-keeled and well-executed. I hope the taste measures up to the aroma.

Aromatic intensity is mild.

TASTE & TEXTURE: The levity of the Munich malts is countered nicely by the richer more bready caramel malts, which are the perfect foundation for a pumpkin ale, bending a bit sweeter than the amber malt based pumpkin ales out there to good effect. All the spices you'd expect are in play, from the rich cinnamon/cassia to nutmeg and clove. I perceive brown sugar, but that's probably just the perceived sweetness engendered by the cinnamon. Pumpkin is present throughout, tasting authentic unlike the pumpkin puree ales out there.

There's not a lot happening hopwise or yeastwise, nor should there be in a pumpkin ale.

I remembered this more balanced than it is structurally speaking; it's a bit weak and thin right on the open, with most of its flavour emerging in the late first act and lingering through the finish. But in terms of flavour, it's certainly well balanced, marrying its one-two punch of pumpkin and spice well. Still, I think the (unintentional) ~1-2 years of age I've given it hasn't done it any favours.

Mouthfeel is smooth and wet, but there is a tingling subtle coarseness that coaxes out a bit more depth of flavour; I blame the cinnamon/cassia bark, which has a tendency to give beers more dryness and roughness. Medium-bodied and not unrefreshing, with near ideal carbonation. Mouthfeel complements the taste well, but no specific flavours are accentuated thereby.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable for its well disguised ABV. This brings everything to the table one would want in a pumpkin ale, but there's room for improvement in terms of depth of flavour and nuance; I'd like a bit more roasted barley presence (if you're going to use it, commit to it) and still more autumnal spice and pumpkin couldn't hurt. I think this is worse for having been aged and I remembered it better; I'm happy to have an excuse to revisit it fresh in future. Definitely a pumpkin ale I'd recommend to friends, and highly preferable to the artificially flavoured zero pumpkin pumpkin ales being put out by brewers who don't want to deal with the production demands of this troublesome style, but not world class work.

This is basically pumpkin pie in a bottle. But the recipe is high on nutmeg and cinnamon. A wee bit strong not in alcohol but pumpkin spices for me. I love pumpkin pie but if it was more creamy smooth pie it would be better. I will be trying some others to compare but I thought the Dogfish head pumpkin was much more drinkable and not so overpowering.

A: A tawny brown with a dark copper hue. Reasonalbly clear with quite apparent carbonation. The very light tan head falls pretty quickly and while it does keep a ring doesn't leave much in the way of lacing.

S: Squash right up front and center! Nice. And then spices jump in - mostly cinnamon and nutmeg - not overly strong, but they do smack you around a bit. Also as whiff of alcohol in there. Malts peak through a bit and lean toward dark crystal with distinct toffee notes and some pale chocolate or something else dark and toasty. Then it is back to the vaguely boozy pumpkin pie.

T: Pumpkin pie spices and alcohol are right there and quite strong. Almost too much. Pumpkin itself starts off more muted in the palate than in the nose. Spices are heavy on cinnamon (with a bit of that spicy character of those red hot candies) and nutmeg, but also the impression that others (allspice, touch of ginger) may be present. Spices are moderated by a sugar cookie sweetness that has strong toffee notes and hints of burnt/caramelized sugars. Any hops are probably getting lost in the spices. As the initial spice wallop fades, some malty, toasty grain comes out along with more pumpkin. Good pumpkin flavor - it even seems that it may have been roasted a bit. Rich in a sweet, boozy, spicy way. I would like to see more middle - more malts - to help carry and smooth the rest. The spice load starts to get to me without an adequate base behind it.

M: Just medium body - which is a bit light for the style and abv. CO2 just over medium which is ok, but along with the spices contributes to finish that seems more drying than it really is. Spices get a bit prickly at the very end.

D: With the initial boozy & spicy hit ( and the apparent and relatively high abv) this, for me, is no easy drinker. I really like the well done pumpkin in this one, but would like more malty flavor and body to provide a richer base for the booze and spice, and to round out the beer. The added heft would also contribute to the sipper quality of this fine seasonal. I could actually go for a tad less spice and booze too, and maybe a touch more pronounced on the pumpkin.

Taste has standard flavors of pumpkin, gingerbread, brown sugar and cinnamon as is typical for the style, but the pumpkin stands out a little stronger (more so than in some other pumpkin beers I've had).

12 ounce brown bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Clear brown in color with head that diminished really quick

Smell: Smells like the spices that may go into a pumpkin pie, with plenty of sweetness

Taste: It really tastes like a liquid pumpkin pie. I am not really a fan of this flavor but I am trying to be unbiased. If you like pumpkin pie this would be a really good beer, probably better then most pumpkin beers I have had.

Aroma is pie crust, spices/cinnamon, slight mustiness and a hint of pumpkin. The flavor is spices/cinnamon, bread/pie crust, a hint of fruit and a tart finish.
