Caned 3/8/2023. Poured on 10/28/2023 from a can into a tulip glass.

Look (4) - Deep cola-black. Beautiful brown, bubbly head that settled into a 1/2 inch.

Smell (3.75) - Mostly baking cocoa. A little nutty. Simple but inviting.

Taste (4) - Taste follows smell. When cold, it starts bitter and very quickly turns sweet. The bitterness falls off as it warms. Dark chocolate, cherries, and baking cocoa. Very sweet, maybe a little over-sweetened. Slight sour/tangy note in the middle with a very gentle bitterness. A little astringent on the finish. Sweet chocolate aftertaste.

Feel (4) - Silky. Tingly on the tongue.

Overall (4) - Rich, chocolate-y dessert beer.

I got a bottle of this beer off the single shelf from a beer store in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. It poured an opaque dark with tan head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had roast malt with molasses highlights. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with roast, dark chocolate, toffee base and subtle vanilla hints. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

A good representation of the style and the craft.
While I am greeted with an OK head, Rhoades Scholar Stout ends only about the style's average. Smells tell me this is the real deal of roasted dark malts with sufficient chocolate. Tastes are the same, providing both a sweetness and, then, a nice drying of the plate famous in the best of this tradition. Bubbles and body are there, too.

Also a refreshing find. Founded in 1996 in the largest town at the remote intersection of three states and Ontario, South Shore Brewery provides a much needed culture and community for the isolated north woods. South Shore does not take the easy road with hopped-up IPAs and, instead, focusses mostly on making nicely malted dark ales. While I have been through Ashland on my way to Duluth only once in my life and am unlikely to be able to visit, finding them and this stout was pleasure enough.

12 oz bottle
North Coast nonic pint

Deep inky black with a really tall creamy beige head, gradually receding to 1/2 finger.

Dark chocolate and bakers cocoa on the nose, with some anise and tobacco, slight caramel, slight toasted/smoked malt.

Flavor is milk chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla, peat, tobacco, dark chocolate, molasses, and very slight earthy hop balance. As it warms the flavors begin to meld and it becomes very smooth.

Feel is creamy and full, a touch over carbonated, with a dry, roasty finish. Minimal warming alcohol.

Overall, a stellar stout, very enjoyable, they definitely changed the recipe from where it used to be. Deserves a much higher rating now.

12oz bottle, snifter glass. Dark black body, brown hue, one finger offwhite head, fair retention, not much lacing. Smell is lactose, milk chocolate, earthy and a bit smoky. Flavour follows, milk chocolate and lactose, grains, smoke is stronger than the nose suggests. Solid earthy finish, mild milky sweetness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, chocolatey mocha with a touch of smoke. Nothing too crazy, but solid, more so given the scores on here. This must have been retooled at some point, I imagine.

Poured from bottle into a Snifter glass.

Pours a very dark brown, nearly black color with a moderate sized chocolatey brown head. Decent retention. Leaves nothing but a very thin ring of lacing around the edge.

Aroma is dominated by chocolate. A hint of molasses and vanilla. Roasted coffee comes through upon agitation. Not enough going on here, either in terms of variety of strength.

Taste does this beer a bit better. The sweet, milky chocolate make themselves known from the get-go. The back end reveals some slightly more matured roasted coffee and chocolate malts. A bit of smokiness provides an excellent touch, very well done.

Medium bodied. Thin for a stout. Carbonation is way too high; it actually takes away from the taste due to its strength. Just too much carbonation for a beer like this. Tastes a bit watered down.

Overall, a decent milk stout here. Its a very good intro to the style if you're not sure what you're getting into, but don't want to try Left Hand Milk Stout. If you're a fan of the brewery, give it a try.
