At 4.5%abv. only, coming in a 500ml brown bottle, bottle-conditioned; BB 12/06/2014, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Notes: The beer is brewed with Scottish peated whisky malt, English pale and roasted malts, whole leaf Goldings hops, then “partially cold matured over pieces of old French oak barrels”.

A: pours a deep dark brown colour with good clarity, with shades of burned caramel around the bottom of the glass, coming with a thin layer of foamy beige head and rather light carbonation.
S: the aroma upfront is mainly chocolaty, licorice-ish, vanilla-ish, and lightly savoury-smoky as in smoked longan-fruits, burned beech wood chips, as well as light peatiness with a little damp-earthy and sea-ish feel; given a good swirl, the sweet elements are elevated as from both malts and the ageing process with old French oak chips, always backed by a decent whiff of acidity from roast malts. All in all, lightly smoky, delicately oaky, but full-bodied fruity-malty like a Porter should be.
T: light-bodied and low on carboantion, the entry is mildly savoury sweet with hints of peated malts, chestnuts, sweet herbs, and rather light-flavoured brown malts, not so much oakiness to offer on the palate; the mid-taste shows light yeasty acidity developing to go with the kinds of esters remotely reminiscent of a Belgian Dubbel (minus the sweet and perfumy edge, though). The finish is lightly bitter, mildly dry and faintly chewy, with a bit more smooth smokiness, roast aroma, and licorice-root like sweetness to linger but, again, the oaky flavours are at best timid.
M&O: the mouthfeel is very smooth, a bit too smooth really, given the bottle-conditioning status; the body comes just medium-ish, with a flavour profile that is generally balanced with subtle elements from the peated malts as well as oak chips, but altogether I’d say the efforts could’ve been made a bit more to really let the French oaky elements shine through.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2012. ABV is stated as 4.5%. Acquired a while back from Beeritz in Leeds. The label mentions that this is made with Scottish peated whisky malt and is matured over fragments of French oak barrels. Bottle conditioned.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep, hazy reddish-brown hue with medium carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that quickly subsides to a surface layer. Aroma of dark roasted malt with notes of smoke, coffee, woodiness and stewed hops. Hints of yeast and caramel.

Tastes of roasted malt with a smoky, woody character and a dry finish. Notes of earthy smoke, oakiness, coffee, burnt grain, bitter cocoa, stewed hops, subtle caramel and yeast. A restrained, dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with well-judged carbonation, however a tad too thin for the style. Mildly astringent. Aftertaste of smoky roasted malt.

Tasty - an interesting and impressive effort from Ridgeway. It's not everyday that you come across a smoked beer from the UK, particularly one that uses peat-smoked malt. The smoke and wood come through nicely in the aroma/flavour, without overpowering the overall character. The only fault is a rather insubstantial body which doesn't live up to the beer's flavour. However, this is a minor peccadillo that can be overlooked. A quirky brew that is well worth sampling if you have the chance.

A- This beer pours a deep walnut brown with a lumpy light tan head that fades to a thin sticky film.

S- The nice mellow roasted dark brown malt aroma has a gentle meaty smoke aroma underneath that takes on a sweaty character as the beer opens.

T- The nice nutty dark malt flavor blends with smoke and an oaky hint to it with a hop bite in the finish that takes on a touch of tartness.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a tight scrubbing fizz and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- This beer has a tasty balance of nice flavors: good fresh malt, band-aid free smoke and some nice hop hint to it aswell. It does get a bit of nougat flavor in the malt as it opens but it doesn’t get in the way.

Chocolate and wood. Roast and chocolate aroma. Medium bodied porter, pours jet black with virtually no head. Good drinkability as soft carbonation, though the wood was not that well integrated and enjoyable. Understated roast, mild smoke. US version at 5.8%.

Pours a dark, dark reddish brown. Minimal lace due to the thickness of the pour. Some thin lace left. Smells are smoke, ash and campfire. Taste is similar. Strong hops and burnt wood leave a taste of campfire smoke or burned toast on the tongue. Moderate carbonation. Complex, nice but potent. Would pair well with a strong cheddar, salami, pear and a cold winter day. Fire optional.

500ml. Very dark brown, thin layer of off white.

Aroma, malt, caramel, peat. Fairly simple.

Taste, More carmelly malt, peat, toffee. Vanilla and fainter nutty chocolate.

Lighter bodied than I'd like. Ample carbonation. Drinks pretty easy, though it is a little sweet.
A little more basic than I had hoped, but it is still good.

Dark brownish black coloration, thin skim of tan foam. Murky appearance, nothing too exciting. Low retention.

Mellow vanilla and cola notes, not unlike the Innis & Gunn Rum Cask sampled recently. Light molasses sweetness, wet peated barley, not especially smoky. Sort of watered down and not particularly expressive.

Flavors were similarly muted, mild vanilla and brown sugar, mellow smoke notes. Kind of watery in the body, not too memorable unfortunately. Best shared, not a repeat buy.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Faint swiss cheese and light tan head, nearly white and quite light looking. At an even three fingers, pops in big bubbles to settle to a thin puck and creamy topped collar. Deep mahogany brown body color with a nice dark red edge.

Aroma is a bit muted and underwhelming. Barely a wisp of smoke, with a bit of dry grain and slight acridness. A bit of hinted roasted malts, and slight fruity character.

Palate makes a big improvement. Good rich hinting milk chocolate sense in the mid palate. Smoke angle hits nicely, but a thicker rich berry quality comes through with a very creamy sensing palate from what seems like classic English yeast. Fruity thick and creamy flavors, getting into strawberry, chocolate and vanilla. Faint whaffs of smoked malt only on the finish, less so in the mid palate and first sips. Light tastes of black licorice slowly come out as the palate rests.

Very nice brew, limited on the smoke, but has a great fruit classic English angle and porter richness.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass

Appearance: Poured with a large creamy head that thins out quite a bit but stays throughout, lacing the glass as you drink. Dark black body slightly reddish.

Smell:Strongly of coffee and smoke with some sweet malt.

Taste: Initial hit of smoky bitterness with an overtone of coffee. Under all this is sweetness.

Mouthfeel: medium body with some carbonation

Overall: Decent porter

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a dark walnut brown with a thin, light khaki head that dissipates to patches and light ring, with light lacing. Nice aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, a hint of peat and vanilla. Flavor is dominated by smoked malt with quite light dark malt, chocolate, light nuts; finishes with somewhat stark smoke, with residual light malt and hints of hops. Medium bodied. The profile seems more like a light brown ale than a porter, mostly because the flavors seem subdued, except the smoke, which is nicely done. With a more robust malt flavor to the base beer, the smoke would be better supported. There are some nice flavors here which are well integrated and balanced, just rather subdued. This seems to be the standard for this brewery, nicely flavored ales that seem to be holding back so as not to offend anyone. Enjoyable enough, but I'd probably pick up something richer in the future. Nice smoked malt flavor.

5.8 version: 11.3 fl oz bottle. Poured on 4th March 2014 at home into a Gordon thistle shaped glass just for the hell of it. Actually the brew suited it, or it would have done if the head had bothered to appear.

Dark, dark ruby red to a deep mahogany body with ahead that disappeared before it arrived: I don't like that!

Mild smokiness to the malty aroma, same in the taste. Some wood notes within the flavours and nose. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate arrive as the beer warms a little which add depth and character to the brew which had been a tad blandish when cooler.

Weaker body than I expected but not watery, just not Porter like either.

Overall not bad, wanted more from it, but content with what I got.

Served in room temperature. I had the version designed for the Finnish stores, with 4.50 ABV.

Appearance: Dark, but not fully opaque. Pours a one finger foamy head that recedes quickly.

Aroma: Malty, with a hint of peat and smoke. Not as smoky as you might expect, but it's clearly present.

Taste: The malt is the most prominent flavour, with a hint of caramel. The smoking brings in some bitterness, but it's not a particularly smoky beer otherwise. Tasty, but rather mild.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, medium bodied

Overall: I think that the 5.80% ABV version of this would probably be better, as now the beer tastes rather mild. Although it could use more of the smoky flavour too. It's perfectly drinkable, but nothing spectacular.

Look: Very dark mahogany color with a 1/4 inch off white head and little to no retention

Smell: Great nose consisting of smoke, oak, and vanilla

Taste: Upfront is a great amount of smoke. The smoke does hide a bit of the other flavors and I don't have a problem with it one bit. In the background are chocolate, vanilla, and oak

Mouthfeel: Thin body and mildly carbonated would have liked the body to be thicker

Overall: A great smoked porter. Great smokey flavor that is not overpowering perfectly balanced. Great example of what a smoked beer could be

To get a subtle smokiness we brew with Scottish peated whisky malt, English pale and roasted malts and boil only whole leaf goldings hops. Querkus is then patiently cold matured over pieces of old French oak barrels.

500ml bottle purchased somewhere localish.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/2" beige head over the clear reddish brown brew. Head dwindles at an average pace, with slow-falling coating lace. Aroma is lightly smoked.

Taste begins with moderate sweet malts, smoke wisps through int he middle, citrus hops in the close, along with more smoke character. Mouthfeel is soft over the tongue, and drinkability is easy. It's no Schlenkerla, but it'll satisfy the smoke fix for a bit.

Nice fluffy almost 2 finger head fades at a med pace over dark brown color with hints of brownish light coming through, and some lacing.

Nose is lots of malts, toasty and very nutty malts, light toasted pecans, maple and brown sugar, some light toasted oak, light smoke, light syrupy dme like aroma.

Taste starts with more syrupy malts, plenty of crystal malts, light toasted oak, light maple and brown sugar, some smoke but not a lot, nutty malts again, light earthy slight herbal hop, a bit sweet and hint of dark fruit, finishes a bit better and spicy hops, sticky but dry, lingering light smoke and lots of malts and syrupy tasting almost.

Mouth is med bodied with decent carb.

Overall decent, nice flavors, a but syrupy and light on the smoke, nice malts and good hop addition.
