I live in Montgomery County just outside the beltway. This is my go to spot. Montgomery County is too expensive and very limited on selection. I like TW because of their selection and their prices. My only complaint is that due to the size of the store, and the amount of employees, I've found when asking for help locating items their systems say they have in stock no one can help me find what I'm looking for. I also think they could do a better job advertising the limited release beers that they keep behind the counter. Smaller shops tweet and advertise on facebook when they get these things in stock (KBS, Hopslam...), at Total Wine you have to stay in contact with them about releases and bother the guys behind the desk to get your shot at em. I understand trying to prevent selling someone more than their allotted amount, but at least put a sign up advertising what you've got and where in the store to go to get it.

I will always continue to go there for their selection and prices. But as much money as I spend there, nobody there knows my name. Nobody has ever greeted me. I wish there was more of an experience.

A very good place with a very good selection of beer. The stock seems to move and the beers are fairly fresh year round. They also have a growler filling station. Highly recommended!

Easily the best TW in the area but I have been to some elsewhere that have a much better selection. Sometimes they get rare beers. I have found the service to be hit or miss depending on who's there but that's fine at a bigger place like this. If you can't go to Norm's, go here.

The store is very brightly lit and the six-packs are organized in such a way that it's easy to understand. The single beer section is a bit problematic because some of the beers might be old and not fresh but are at least now neatly organized. However, the look itself looks like it's from the 80s. Time to choose some new colors people.

The service is sometimes sporadic at best. Some of the people really know their beers while others don't. Also, the store needs to do a better job of finding beers that the program claims to have.

The beer selection is phenomenal and very diverse. Unfortunately, some of it gets hidden in messy shelves because not enough room is dedicated to it.

The closest Total Wine & More for me. I hit this place at least once a month. A nice well stocked place. Something you would expect from a large chain. Great selection, but not necessarily anything rare. Sometimes I run across something unexpected. Beware the dusty bottles and the bottled-on date. Some knowledgable beer mongers on staff, just depends who's there that day. When I just need to try some new beers I know I can easily find six at this place. Prices are the best or no higher than any place else I might go.

Situated in one of Washington DCs expensive and exclusive suburbs is Total Wine McLean.

When you first enter the store is very large but the beer selection takes up about perhaps forty percent of the floor space. Sometimes certain new selections are near the entrance and the cash register often in large quantities. The day I went in late September there was enough Southern Tier Pumking and Shipyard pumpkin to fill a giant pumpkin patch. Also in one area devoted to accessories there was also some basic glassware.

Like all Total wines there are plenty of sixers and lots to choose to buy single twelve ounce bottles and bombers. International section is kind of basic but has quite a lot to choose. You wont find anythin real foreign obscure here like Cantillon however. Also keep an eye on some of the bottles because many have been siting. There is one selection near the back that is for seasonal releases which can be easily missed. This was quite a good place to find all the Marzens I wanted in one place at the time. Although there were also summer release singles here that were way past their prime.

Service seems friendly enough although I never had to rely on it.

Much of the pricing here was actually quite reasonable for.the area in fact with many items cheaper than I would find them in DC.

It is a little out of the way to go here for me (the place really isn't that much different from the location in Alexandria) I wouldn't be making a big effort to come back again. But if I was in the area I certainly would stop by to stock up.

I love this place. Stopped in here with some friends while visiting them in McLean. My friends weren't sure if they had beer or not. Lo and behold they had quite the selection. One of the best craft and import selections I have seen. Not only do they have great selection of brews but they also have tons of great wines and a nice walk in humidor with quite the selection. The service is also excellent. The staff is all very friendly and knowledgeable. They helped us find what we wanted and had some nice conversation about some of the beers we were getting. I would highly recommend this place.

One of my usual haunts here in NoVa. Now, as the name implies, the focus is indeed on wine, but the beer aisle(s) are very nice. Part is devoted to sixers and four-ers (dammit, I need a term for 4-packs beyond "4-packs"), and another to cases and whatnot. I tend to focus on the singles area, though, which showcases a wide range of American and European craft brews at very reasonable prices. Normally they don't really carry the highly sought-after rarities, but every now and then something crazy pops up. Regardless, there is always something to make me happy. Though not necessarily the best place in the area, I would definitely recommend making a stop here if you're in the neighborhood.

Overall selection was strong but fell short compared to what they had listed as available single beers on their website. Examples are Founder's, Southern Tier and Bell's which were very limited in a singles selection. Most of the single beers we were loooking for were available in six-packs. Their Stone, Rogue and Allagash selection was extensive. The service was very good and we were offered assistance on several occassions. Overall a solid experience. Will be returning as soon as my supply runs low.

Great selection. I've looked at their selection pretty thoroughly, and they carry 14 of BA's 100 "top beers on planet earth," and countless other great beers. They probably have the best selection of all the places I've found in the McLean/Falls Church/Western Arlington area.

My main complaint is that their make-your-own-six-pack option does not save you any money. They have a great selection of individually priced bottles to choose from, but they tend to be overpriced, and it doesn't matter whether you buy one or 6. When I say overpriced I mean that to buy 6 of the same individually priced beers is often more expensive than buying a six pack of that beer. I would buy more here if they had a $9 or $10 make-your-own sixpack deal or something. If you buy a six pack instead of making a mixed one or buying individual bottles, the prices are better, and pretty similar to other places.

Definitely the place to go for good beer in McLean. Outside of McLean, a great place is the little grocery store (I think it's called Westover Market) across the street from the Lost Dog Cafe in Arlington; and the Whole Foods in Falls Church isn't bad. But if you have a specific beer in mind, your best bet is probably Total Wine.

This is a beer and wine retailer only, so for me the biggest selling point is selection. I was skeptical of this place before going in. Number one, the grocery stores in Northern Virginia tend to have a fairly extensive selection. Number two, places like the Lost Dog Cafe in Arlington have already wowed me with their massive offerings.

So I was pleasantly surprised when I went in and found virtually every beer I had ever seen with more than local distribution. Also, the prices were not especially high compared to some other venues for picking up an obscure brew.

Quality: The store has a nice layout, and a relatively large beer section despite obviously being a wine store that appears to cater to the Stepford wives of McLean. They also sell some snacks, soda, water, cups, ice, etc, making a good place to stock up for a party all in one place.

Service: The salespeople are always walking around. They're definitely not pushy about trying to suggest beers. They could be more helpful about offering to bring you a cart, for example, but one guy did recommend a nice strong ale that was on sale that I really enjoyed. Above average, especially for such a large store, but nothing spectacular.

Selection: A really great variety. Pretty much every domestic micro with a national distribution, you can find. Lots of seasonals, and nice foreign offerings as well. Whether you want a case of swill on the cheap or a twelve dollar bottle of Belgian ale, they've got it covered.

Value: They seem to occasionally have some specials on seasonals they're trying to liquidate. Otherwise, prices are pretty standard, perhaps a bit cheaper than others. Certainly more affordable than buying from a grocery or liquor store. They also have a large selection of macro and micro kegs. I haven't really looked into them much, but it seems to be an impressive selection, with a walk-in cooler.

Overall, I like this place a lot. Sure, it's a little bit sterile and corporate, but their selection and variety is tough to match.

Total Wine offers a massive selection of beers and a really large selection of mix-n-match bottles. Sadly, I had bought most of my allotted beer for the trip (to take back on my flight) before stopping in, and couldn't buy nearly as much as I wanted.

No one offered to help me while I was browsing (not that I minded as I knew what I was looking for), and the man who checked me out seemed befuddled and incredulous while looking at my Kansas drivers license. He also remarked with astonishment that I would pay $4.50 for one can of Oskar Blues Gordon, which I thought wasn't smart for business. Those are small complaints, and overall I found the place to offer just about everything I could hope to find while on the East Coast.

I'm not too sure how their pricing compares, though I'd suspect they're on the higher end being located in McLean. I don't believe there was any discount for buying lone bottles, which I've heard of other places nearby offering.

I will certainly go back next time I'm in McLean.

This is like all other total wine stores, big, mostly wine, and probably the ire of many a small shop type places. that said, if they do a good job, and have high quality you can't knock them too bad. For that reason I did poke my head in here. It is probably the nicest total wine i have been to. it is probably one of the newer ones. All the bottles seem relatively new, and the selection while not amazing did have a good sampling of the local brews as well as a decent selection of import and out of area beer. I found a few things i couldn't find elsewhere, like the Sam Adams long shot winners. So it is what it is. I am for supporting the smaller guy when i can, but this is one of the better total wines, and they offer a relatively good sampling, and can be another place to look for something.

Once again, inexpensive in a relative sense. Relative to folks who already live in Northern VA. and are familiar with the cost of living here. Total Wine has a broad selection of micros and macros, and many deals await those who are patient and meticulous. They do tend to over-order alot of seasonals that sit on the shelves way past their optimal windows of freshness, and the single bottle selection, while quite impressive, contains many bastard beers of forsaken staleness, so beware!! But what do you expect from a store that is primarily a beer/ wine store? Like I said - patience. You have to be a smart, experienced, and informed shopper to find the good deals on the fresh beer - they don't all have bottling dates, so you must look for other clues.
