Appearance: Pours a clear light amber color with a solid head that retains well and leaves a few dots and dashes of lace

Smell: Fresh grapefruit juice aroma with a touch of grain

Taste: After a touch of the biscuit, the grapefruit and grainy hops take over and provide a refreshing, bitter blast at mid-palate; after the swallow, a bit of malt appears to moderate the bitterness; the grapefruit flavor persists well into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Drinkability: Surprisingly refreshing, with a great citrus flavor

Little white head. Slightly hazy golden amber. Excellent lacing.

Bright/fresh aroma. Tons of juicy grapefruit.

Fantastic fresh ipa. Excellent cracker/bready malt flavors that give way to big fresh hop flavor.
Mostly citrus again. Wonderful lingering bitterness. Bread like after taste as well

Pin point carbonation and medium body.

This is an excellent IPA

a: poured from a 12 oz bottle into my new belgium goblet. faily thin 2 finger head just abit yellower than white settles to almost NOTHING but leaves very nice lacing. No clarity to this brew at all.

s very, very nice indeed. hard to describe - but very appealing. hoppy with a bit of something else that I really like but cant pu my finger on.

t this is a hopiness with a sting backbone but not such a stong bite.

m the alcohol adds just a bit of bite, just as the hops do. this is well carbonated, and really a FULL beer.

d Much as I love it I cant give this full credit in the drinkabilty dept - more of a sippin beer rather than a session beer.
OTOH I will DEFINITELY be looking for this one again!

One of my favorite main stream IPA's for sure.

Pours without much head at all but the smell that this beer puts off fixes that problem. It smells wonderful, and has a taste to match. Overall just a really impressive brew from Widmer, would have to say its about the fullest flavor beer I can buy without having to go to a specialty store around here.

Overall if you like somewhat strong IPA's I would suggest this one, a great one to introduce people to if they don't know what an IPA is yet.

MY BAD!!!!

I had originally reviewed this under "Halo". It was not "Halo", but "Broken Halo".

Here goes, again....

Looks sunshine yellowy/orangy , nice head disappeared fast, feathery lacing.

Citrus and grapefruit, heavy on the grapefruit

Same on the taste, refreshing bittery hoppy grapefriut, a little malty sweetness.

I could drink the hell out this, epecially on a warm day. The only problem is that I've only seen it one time at our local Sam's Club in a varity pack. They (Sam's) threw temptation at me, got me hooked and took it away. Typical Sam's!

This makes one fine summer refresher. I wish I could get some more. I'll have to find another way.

It would be very hard to argue against Broken Halo unless you demand for your beer to be clear; and you know how the brothers love their yeast! It's hazy golden-orange body looks great in the glass, and it exhibits fine head retention and lacing. The nose is quite welcoming with gentle, but very fruity citrus, and a mild note of sweetish malt. The body is delicately crisp and smooth with a very fine bubbled, moderate carbonation. The flavor is bursting with a combination of fruity citrus (mainly grapefruit, but also tangerine and subtle pineapple), grainy and lightly caramelish malt, and an underbelly of gently piney hop. The bitterness is solid but smooth, and anchors it nicely in the finish as the hops leave the palate with a zing of zippy citrus. It's remarkably well-balanced and drinkable without any faults at all. Quite nice!

Color is pale golden with a thin white head, very little retention.
Smell is all cascade hops, at least I think. Fruity citrus like grapefruit aromas. There is a sweet carmel scent as well. Taste is pretty bitter but very smooth, a nice mix with the sweet malt flavor of carmel. Hoppy flavor, earthy and grapefruit in the aftertaste. Mouth watering beer in the aftertaste, the bitterness doesnt linger like on some IPA's.

Pours a pale copper color with a 2 finger white foamy head that leaves sticky lacings and keeps a nice thin film on top the entire time. Citrusy hop aroma faint malt smell. Fairly weak aroma in general. A great taste with strong fresh citrus hops and a very nice sweet malty balance. Flavorful and not overy bitter. The hops are are more about aroma and flavor than bittering.

Nice medium body, smooth front to back, finishes with a fairly mild bitterness.

Lacking somewhat in complexity but overall a very drinkable IPA with a nice balance of maltyness and hoppyness. Hops are balanced more to the aroma and flavor side than the bitter side.

I picked up a six-pack of Broken Halo IPA at a grocery store for my daughter’s graduation party. I poured this beer in to a pint glass.

Pours a rich gold color and is very clear. A bubbly one-finger white head forms and is moderately resilient. The head laces the side of the glass nicely.

The smell is fairly strong, sweet and fruity. There is a citrus aroma and the scent of hops.

The taste is a full-bodied mild hop flavor, with a fruity citrus flavor, and then a mildly bitter hop finish. The flavors are very well balanced.

Mouth feel is smooth, clean and crisp.

This is a very drinkable beer, perhaps the best Widmer product I have tried. I’ll be looking for more Broken Halo IPA.

It might be a little stronger than some but it doesn't make a different in taste. In fact this IPA seems to be almost too smooth sometimes.
Nice flavor a little less hoppy than I would usually expect...

Less likely to get some nasty after-taste and it burps nicely too..

Sometimes I taste it twice, but I guess I got my dad's stomach..

This is my other "go-to" beer besides Bridgeport IPA.

A- Pours with a nice big frothy head about two inches settles nicely into a thick-ish layer over the brew. There is lots of hazy suspended yeast and is a golden color with some orange hues in the backround. The lacing is very clingy, with lots of little bubbles sticking to my glass.

S- The hops are present immediately, closely followed by citrus notes and some clean pine aromas as well. There is some oily character that I'm guessing is from the hop flowers used, which rounds out the malt sweetness.

T- The flavors closely resemble the aromas....lots of hop bitterness in the front and on the finish, but it is balanced out nicely by sweet malts and some oil breaking citrus flavors, including grapefruits....rind and all. It is clean and crisp tasting.

M- Medium bodied and the carbonation is plentiful, but the bubbles are fine. It feels leafy/earthy and I feel like I've put some fresh hop cones in my mouth.

D- I'd enjoy drinking this beer and would like to try it with a spicier dish, such as a thai curry. For a 6% brew, the booze is hidden well and I think this is a great beer for the summertime.

Serving Type Sampled: 12 fl. Oz. brown crown top bottle. Bottle is dated and the cap has a prost to unrequited lust!

Appearance: Straw in color, brilliant clarity. Soapy white head that fades quickly into a tight lace.

Smell: Very floral hops. Red roses.

Taste: The taste is that of the nose. Floral and rosy. Malt is quite nice flavors of caramel and light honey. Mildly sweet with a great bitter balance. Great piney after taste that’s smooth in stead of harsh like many other IPA’s.

Mouthfeel: Medium to light in body. Very smooth mild carbonation. Very little effervescent bubbles.

Drinkability: Great. This is a very nicely done IPA. Quite drinkable and very true to style.

I was really impressed here. A few years back I tried Widmers special release IPA and was unimpressed. I think they got it right with Broken Halo. I don't care if AB has a stake in this company, it doesn't appear to me that it has afected the quality of this beer. Super hoppy and refreshing an absolute pleasure throughout. This gives Widmer the amber, hefeweizen, and IPA as their standard offering with multiple seasonals and special releases backing them up. Good strategy in my opinion.

This was my first Widmer and I was pleasantly surprised. I bought a case of four different styles and find the brewery quite acceptable. I've had better IPAs, but I really enjoyed this one. The Widmer had the characteristic IPA flavor that was a little bitter, yet refreshing. Not great, but nice.

Appearance: Hazey gold

Aroma: Very floral, quite clean and piney

Flavor: Solid hop front, backed with citrus and pine. Not very bitter at all.

Medium body, medium carbonation.

From the bottle, served in an American pint glass.

Decent IPA. Not bad, not amazing. Might as well grab a Stone.

A- Hazy transparent amber/orange pale-ale colored body with a filmy head and ample lacing

S- Nice, sweet malts along with a kick of standard piney/citrus IPA hops

T- Great smooth balance of flavors reveals a full range of good taste in this beer. Begins with sugary, pale malts and ends with bright, spicy hops. Nothing risky, but keeps me interested

M- Lacks a full consistency, but carbonation carries it well over the tongue

D- Strong enough to stand up to my "Monster 'Wich" (wheat bun, corned beef, turkey, ham, pepperoni, deli mustard, spicy mayo, buffalo sauce, red onions, lettuce, pepperoncini, bell peppers, and crushed red pepper)

I was really impresed with this beer. I don't know much about Widmer beers. But suddenly I can find them everywhere. I thought they might be a Macro brew pretending to be a craft beer. This one was purchased at Krogers. The freshness date was April of 07. Looks good coming out of the bottle. A hazy dull gold color with decent head. Good head retention and lots of lace. Smell is hoppy but somewhat understated with a citrus flavor. Taste is good very nice blend of flavors not too much of anything but enough of everything. Mouthfeel is solid. I could drink lots of these. All in all a very good IPA in my view.

Underneath the bottle cap "PROST: To Calling It A Day."

Pours with a hazy cloudy sunset burnt orange hue topped with a beige splotchy craggy head cap leaving notes of lace dripping down the glass.

Nose offers a blast of tangerine and apricot that infiltrates the olfactory with a fury. Malty backing supports this hop tornado, despite the IPA moniker. (Seems like this sucker is fresh!)

First swigs: Clearly a balanced pale ale that is dead on the 50/50 mark of fresh light peach and apricot citrus front with a light tongue sizzle followed through with a wheat bread malt base that builds a rock solid IPA.

Feel is fresh and breezy with a medium bodied airy offering that begs to be quaffed. Easily drinkable. My fave Widmer Bros beer to date.

Last swigs: Purchased the last two bottles at HollingsHead Deli and am I glad that I did. Website says Cascade and Columbus.

Beer is good. Happy zesty IPA beering.

Bottle Poured into a Pint Glass

Appearance: A slightly darker than staw color. A white think creamy head that stayed put for a while. It also had good lacing.

Smell: Get some floral hop notes. Unfortunately it isn't very pungent.

Taste: Good bittering flavor as well as tasting hops. Sits very well on the tongue all the way through.

Mouthfeel: I think it has a little too much of a hop burn. The Beer did feel good otherwise in the mouth.

Drinkability: A little to carbed up otherwise at only 6% i'd drink quite a bit of this.

Having lived in California, I got spoiled with higher abv beers like Lagunitas but it's tough to get a good one in this part of TX, but this is good + affordable, I got a 6pack at HEB the other day for 7.49 overall it has a good taste, better drinkability than many of its peers but is still pretty hoppy. Not as good as Dogfish,
will have to do I guess ..

12 oz. bottle poured into tulip. A light straw color with bubbles of widely varying size in a short head with some good lacing - I think darker beers are more purdy, but this will do.

Has a typical nice piney hoppy smell.

The taste of this one is very pleasant to my palate. It's very hoppy, but not overly bitter due, I think, to a nice toasty malt backbone. At 6% it's not overly alcoholic, which is actually nice in this era where most well-made beers are getting into the 9% range routinely.

Not too much else to say about this one except that it's a very nice American IPA that is probably an excellent session beer, and I'll probably use it that way during football season.

On-tap at a bar in Austin, TX.

Pint glass fills with a golden, light-orange ale that's well carbonated but otherwise unflattering. Head retention is so-so. A resinous, piney hop note greets the nose, along with sweetened caramel, grapefruit & bubblegum.

The taste packs a surprisingly large, bitter hop profile with a bit of sweetness to the malts: nice balance. Mouthfeel is crisp, refreshing, and packs one hell of a bitter/salty bite on the end. This IPA goes down smooth, has a good amount of hops to it, and a decent amount of complexity. An enjoyable IPA all around.
