22oz bottle poured into snifter
Pours a slightly burnt orange color with some brighter golden tones. A froth of beige head rests on top, retains pretty well with a smattering of lacing on the glass.
Splash of citrusy hops with a nice whiff of grapefruit. Some hints of pineapple and tropical fruit. A thick bready malt presence comes through with a nice warmth.
Bitter and juicy up front with a pretty distinct hop flavor. Grapefruit and pineapple create a citrus cocktail. Burnt sugar and bready notes lead into a nice malty backbone. Caramel with some lingering fruity notions. Finishes boozy and hoppy.
Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, sticky and chewy on the tongue. Drinks really nicely actually, and I had no problem finishing off my half of the bottle. I haven't been too impressed with some of their other beers, but I was into this one.

Reviewed from tasting notes. L: Deep chestnut with ¼ - ½” foam collar that quickly dissipates S: Spicy hop aromas – maybe a little citrus and floral. T: Malty but the use of Belgian candi sugar lightens the body to keep it from tasting syrupy. The hops are bold and work well with the caramel and toffee from the malt and the big alcohol while the citrusy, tropical fruit notes from the hops provide interest. F: Medium body and carbonation. O: A satisfying, American style barley wine.

Spring 2011!!! I let this one age a while. Probably affected the hops presence but the beer is still very solid.
Initial pour was an opaque clear amber with a medium size light tan head, Head retention is good. Filmy lacing with some small spots of froth. Subsequent pours were a murky/ hazy/amber.
Smell was sweet caramel malt all the way. Fairly prominent.
Taste is sweet caramel malt up front with some hops bitterness in the finish. I wonder what 3 years of aging did to the hops presence but this is still a very enjoyable brew./
Mouthfeel is crisp and somewhat rich. A little lighter than some of the monster barleywines. There is always a little alcohol harshness in a good barleywine, but it is fairly muted and more smooth here. Aging makes a difference.
A very tasty baraleywine,

A: Dark purplish brown with a mocha head.
S: Orange, cherry and those delicious galaxy hops in the nose.
T: Slightly sweet with citrus and cherry, as well as that delicious tropical fruit flavor that galaxy hops impart. Passionfruit, mango, papaya, deliciousness.
M: Medium bodied and smoothish.
O: This is my favorite Widmer beer, which isn't saying a ton, but it's amazing. Galaxy hops ftw!

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/14/2011. Pours very hazy dark ruby red color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big raisin, orange zest, pineapple, grapefruit, caramel, toast, toffee, candi sugar, biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and hop notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, grapefruit, orange zest, pineapple, caramel, toast, toffee, floral, pine, grass, candi sugar, biscuit, and floral earthiness. Slight pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, citrus, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, floral, light pine, candi sugar, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of malt and hop flavors; with a great hop/malt balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a moderately slick, smooth, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barleywine style. All around good complexity and balance of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
