12oz. bottle served in my SA Perfect Pint at 53 degrees. APR 22 11 indicated on the label. Pours a translucent honey gold with a loose, half inch off-white head. Head disperses into a bull's eye dollop and a thin, soapy band around the edges. Nose expresses citrus, grassy notes and a faint, sweet character towards the back. Taste is citrusy, but not very distinct or full-bodied. A slight earthiness comes out towards the back and there are some biscuity notes interspersed with the citrus; however, it all comes off somewhat watery. Mouthfeel is light in body with a prickly, almost gassy, carbonation and a slight acidity that lightly stimulates the sides of the cheeks and the back of the tongue. I know its only a 4.30% abv, but all and all it's a bit lackluster. Not something I would really care to session.

Poured into a pint glass from a standard 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear straw with a moderate cap of white foam. Decent but unexciting retention and lacing follow.

Strong Citra hop notes on the aroma are clean yet singular in nature, with perhaps a bit of wheat like sourness. Bready notes are largely absent here, as are any spice subleties. Touch of tangelo and guava on the tongue are likely hop derived. Carbonation is a bit light to keep things interesting however, particularly given the light malt body of this beer.

Finish is pleasant yet brief with just a touch of lemony grain lingering after a second or two. Overall I'd recommend drinking this one directly from the bottle while sailing or at the BBQ where the hops remain prominent and the carbonation a bit more firm.

pours out a pale gold colour with some very active carbonation supporting a thin white head. nice retention and lace. citra hops provide a bunch of juicy fruit aromas, definitely overshadowing the biscuity malt aroma. taste is again hop centric, hop forward and hop juice. a bit of crackery malt tries to prop up this beer but because of the low ABV and dry character of this beer the hop juice flavour is the king. summer quencher for sure. this blonde ale has light body and easy going mouthfeel..a bit crisp and certainly a quenching feel. drinkability is very nice....or should i say slammability.

overall this is a quintessential summer time brew...easy to drink, flavourful and appealing to the everyday hop head. pretty nice. recommended.

Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a clear golden yellow color with about a half-inch of white head that had decent retention and minimal lacing.

The aroma had that bright, fruity Citra hop scent upfront and a nice earthy, grainy grass aroma in the background. The flavors were the same, good grassy malts and sharp, citrusy hops.

The body was fairly typical, light, crisp and smooth. Drinkability was good, my bottle went down quick and easy. Overall, a very nice little beer. Worth grabbing a sixer for after yardwork, or for a cookout or picnic.

Had on tap at Mahar's Public Bar (Albany, NY) on 7/26/11

A- Transparent blonde/golden. Poured with an extremely thin head that dissipated quickly. Little to no lacing.

S- Heavy apricot and hops.

T- Bright hop flavors combined with apricot, peach, and grapefruit. Not too sweet, the fruit flavors work well with the hops. A refreshing beer that I would imagine would work well as a beer to go with warm weather outside festivities. "Crisp"

M- High in carbonation, which I would expect in this type of beer.

O- This is a fairly average brew all told, but it works well for what it is. While it isn't something I'd knock people over to get, I'd drink it again in a pinch.

Pours 1/2 finger of white head that fades down fast. Color is a clear autumn golden orange.

Aroma: Reminds me a bit of a wheat. A lot of fruit and citrus flavors. Lemons and oranges with some earthy hops. Fairly light.

Taste: Lemon citrus and orange slices. Earthy and floral. Wheat flavors. Light.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and clean. Light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends a bit dry.

Overall, it was a fairly average beer. It drank easy, but there wasn't a lot of flavor here.

poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Bottled on May 25th, 2011.

A - Pours a perfectly transparent light blonde with a two finger, white head. Very little carbonation. Head is reduced to a ring of bubbles half way down the glass. Leaves behind only a few splotches of lacing.

S - Sweet and malty with plenty of orange spice.

T - Sweet orange flavor upfront followed a straw-malt and orange dominated body. Hop flavor is perhaps subdued too much and only can be faintly distinguished in the background. A little more hop flavor as the beer passes over the back of the tongue followed by a a dry finish. Over time, an orange flavor makes an encore.

M - Light bodied with low carbonation yet a bit creamy. I think it suits the beer quite well - definitely a thirst quencher.

The lack of hop flavor, light body and low carbonation make this a beer I would go for when the weather is hot. A fine summer brew with nothing offensive, but nothing to put it much over the likes of Shock Top either. Definitely sessionable (as advertised), I could see kicking back quite a few of these while working on cars on a 100 degree plus day here in New Mexico.

Picked up this 6'er that I probably would not normally have. On sale at Zipp's for $5.00

About a finger of white head, slowly receding to a thin film with generous collar.
Color on the brew is a darker golden yellow, all transparent.
Aroma providing some nice grains and plenty of malt, resembling honey and grassy hops with a citric rind tinge.
Taste is very well balanced, a lawnmower with actual flavor. Bready grains and light orange peel. Finishing dry and clean, almost not lingering flavors, just hints of grains and distant rind.

Terrific sessioner for the abv and flavor present.
Overall a good beer for the category. Not something I'd normally seek out, but I could drink more of this.

Poured from a 12-oz bottle into a pilsner glass. Color was a clear gold, almost looked like urine from a dehydrated person. Maybe ¾ inches of head that dissipated pretty quickly and was completely gone 10-12 minutes into the beer.

Smell was strong and citrusy and full of fruits with extra vitamin C. From oranges to orange peels to tangerines to grapefruit. The smell stuck in your senses for an unusually long time.

First thing I noticed about the taste was how clean and refreshing it was. It was full of flavors, mostly fruits. Really citrusy that cleans out your nose. Orange peels reign supreme with the taste. The aftertaste was fairly strong on the alcohol, not as good as the initial taste.

Carbonation seems to be just above average. Really light and refreshing. Definitely a good summer brew that would be great by the pool or at the beach. The taste stayed on the tongue for a long time.

Overall I enjoyed this beer. I don’t know if I could drink it all the time, but in the heat I’d be good for two or three. It’s light, refreshing and the smells and flavors really seem to mix well.

Pours a hazy gold color, with a small white head.

Aromas are of tangerines, apricots, and sugars. Nice nose.

Taste starts out slightly dry and a little bit sweet. Nice light creamy malts, faint spices and bread dough. Finish is crisp, and clean, with some nice lemon and mineral like hoppiness.

Mouthfeel Is good, full and smooth, with good crisp carbonation,

Overall, this is a pleasant surprise. Very drinkable, especially with the warm weather outside, but still with plenty of flavor. Might not fit the strict terms, but this is pretty sessionable to me. Well done Widmer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

This beer pours a nice clear golden color with a finger or so of bone-white head. Retention is alright due to the ample carbonation. The aroma on this is fantastic, I get a nice dose of bright citrus hops over a Kolsch-esque base of bready malts. The taste is very good, with the bright citrus and tropical fruit flavors of Citra hops being front and center. There's a bit of bready malts and a crisp, watery aftertaste with a bit of malts and a touch of pine creeping its way in. This is basically the perfect hot weather beer I've been looking for. I want to drink this all day. The mouthfeel is light and crisp, and the drinkability is very good.

Overall? I love this beer. It's HOT out in Florida. This is one of the best ways to beat the heat I've found so far, it's very refreshing while still having a satisfying flavor. I'm depressed that I only bought the single bottle, and am going first thing to the beer store tomorrow after work to pick up a couple more sixers. Bravo, Widmer.

A: pours a clear pretty gold color into an American shaker with a half finger of off white head that dissipates quickly but leaves spotty lacing.

S: orange, blood orange, sweet malt, flaky butter biscuits.

T: orange and sweet malts are the main flavor of the beer. Like a blonde should be with some extra taste and aroma hops thrown in. They don't make the beer to bitter to be a summer beer but they add a complexity to it. Grapefruit, orange, lemon, biscuit and caramel. Defiantly different.

MF: medium body, tart, crisp, not refreshing but not dry or heavy on alcohol.

O: the best way to put this beer in a category is to say its a hop heads picnic beer. A great standout from the usual kolsch and wit summer beers. I'll be buying this a lot for a surprise picnic beer no one sees coming.

I am not a summer brew fan, but I thought I might taste this one.
It poured a clear light gold and there was little head, and whatever little there was, dissipated immediately. Very little lacing. Looked very flat.
The smell gave me a better impression, with nice citrus and hop notes.
The taste therefore was a little weak, since we had the citrus fruit notes up front, then some bread and grain in the middle and a weak hop flavor at the end. Good balance, but to faint and weak for my taste. But I know it is supposed to be a summer brew.

12oz bottle with a Bottle On Date of Apr 22 2011. Pours a translucent very light golden color with almost no head. Very minimal lacing. Aroma has a nice amount of citrus and tropical fruits. Good amount of hops in the nose. Taste has a lot less hop flavor than I thought there would be. Faint citrus taste. Flavor has more breadiness and malt flavor. Light and watery with a thin mouthfeel. This beer let me down. The aroma was really good but the taste was lacking. Still an alright summer beer, but I would never get it on its own. Alright in the mix 12 pack I got it in but that is where it needs to stay.

Looks like a blonde ale, even has nice head and -lacing to it. Just a great aroma out of this one, definite citra hops, I thought this smelled as good or better than citra dipa from Kern!

Nice light bodied beer, lightly hopped, but refreshing, slick finish, just a nice clean beer. Nothing is heavy (other than the aroma), hopped just right for the minimal heft of the beer. One of my favorite beers of 2011, and easily in the top 3 session beers of the year. You get a mild citrus flavor that is totally complimented by the very lightly toasted malt presence that is kept minimal and in harmony with everything else.

Keep this coming all summer long! A little citra (hop) goes a long way.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Even with a vigorous pour, produces little head. Very nice deep golden color. Very minimal lace.

S: Sweet tropical fruits with a nice "C" hop spice. Banana, cherimoya, pineapple.

T: Mmmmm... Full body in the malt profile. Good tropical flavors persist. Light pina colada, orange and banana candy. Hop bitter is understated and hits at exactly the right point in the taste profile. Maybe not overly flavorful but very good.

M: Very viscous and well carbonated. Oily and has a salinity I rarely find in commercial brews.

D: Widmer does it right with this summer offering.

A: The pour is a slightly hazed golden straw color with a fluffy white head.

S: Floral hop notes with some subtle citrus and fruity hop aromas. Some light malt notes of bread and biscuit. A light tropical note, but not super fragrant overall.

T: The flavor has a bit more punch to it, but not substantially different. Citrus and tropical fruit hop notes with a lot of floral flavors as well. Some sweet bread and toasted malt, too.

M: Light to medium in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: While not an amazing beer, this is a good one to drink on a hot day.

I've kinda stayed away from Widmer Bros beers cuz I'm not real big on their Hefeweizen. But recently I checked out their Pale Ale which I like and then this Citra Blonde beer which I REALLY like!
In the category of refreshing type beers, to my taste this one is way above the rest. The gravity of this beer is just right and makes it perfect for warm summer days. It has just the right amount of sweetness and the Citra Hops give it the magic touch that sets it apart from the others. They really do give it a smell like grapefruit and provide an exceptional hop flavor without any trace of sharp bitterness. I have a feeling we're going to start seeing this hop show up in a lot of beers similar to how Cascade hops took over when they were first discovered by the microbrew crowd..
I like to vary my beer choices and buy a different selection on my way home each Friday followed by a 2nd and maybe 3rd over the weekend. I live in Seattle so I have a lot of choices and I try them all. After discovering Citra Summer Blonde I've now brought it home on three of the last four Fridays.
I find Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew--that's a lot of names!--to be very refreshing and highly flavorful. It's darn near a perfect beer!

Appearance has a light golden yellow color with a fairly crisp thin head leaving spotty lace. Smell of citra hops having a grassy note with mild malt. Taste of the citra hops are blended very well with the malt making it easy to go down. Mouthfeel is light with mild carbonation again making it easy to go down. A very tasty light brew that goes down quick making for a nice session.

Golden yellow, fluffy white head. Citrus hops on the nose. Great malt and citrus hop flavor, doesn't lay on the tongue. I've tried a dozen or so summer seasonal beers this year and this was my favorite. Very drinkable. I like that the hops are for flavor, not for bittering to any great degree, as I've tried the citra IPA from Widmer and it's pretty harsh, even for an IPA. If you ever wanted to know why they named this hop citra, try this beer, you'll read the bottle wondering if they added orange/lime/lemon, nope.

Served on-tap in a plain tumbler pint glass at Eli Cannon's in Middletown, Conn.

A: Clean, pale golden color with a two-finger head of tight carbonation bubbles that retains pretty well and leaves a bit of sticky lace. Clarity is quite good.

S: Toasted grains, bits of zesty spices and metal with a skunky, citrusy hop aroma.

T: Light, thirst-quenching toasted malt flavor throws a bit o cracker into the mix with spicy, herbal hops that impart some of that skunky, all spice and coriander flavor. Semisweet malts dry out really quickly for a bone-dry finish.

M: Light-bodied and refreshing citrus notes all but disappear in the very dry hop finish.

O: Not a bad blonde and a summer ale for hop fans. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Citra, but on this impression, I'm not a huge fan. The 4.3% ABV means you can session til the cows come home, but there may not be enough to hold the attention of most. Worth a shot this summer.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a clear gold with a soapy light white head. Fizzy look, with no lace.

S: Real nice tropical nose. Clear pineapple, with some passion fruit and mango cocktail juice from the 90s.

T: Notes of banana and bubblegum with yellow Now and Laters. Semi-sweet bready malt, with some light hopping. The tropicality comes through in the finish. A nice taste if not really full-flavoured.

M: Light-bodied, frothy, some carbonic feel.

O: Widmer continues to be one of the best value brands in beer IMO. Definitely just a beer for the summertime, I could see this being very refreshing. The Citra adds an interesting complexity and makes for a beer that's fun to drink.

I recently picked up a bottle of this one as part of a mixed six pack, and I wish I has some more. Poured a light golden color with a little white head, which quickly disappears. Good hoppy aromas here, orange zest, papaya, pineapple. On the palate, this one was light and refreshing, with more orange, pineapple and papaya.

12oz bottle of a super hoppy blonde. Bright yellow with a hint of orange. The smell is a fabulous melange of citrus, tropical fruit, and hoppiness, surprising. The taste is more fantastic citrus but at the same time it just doesnt have any oomph behind it and fades fast. The citra hops are showcased well here but I think they work better in an IPA.

Widmer Citra Summer Blonde Brew
Code: Apr 26 11 07:41 NH (50 days old)
12 oz. $1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE

Now here's a Widmer beer I can really get behind! And in case you weren't aware of it, Citra hops were cultivated by Sierra Nevada and Widmer in 2008/2009.

It's a crystal-clear, deep-golden color with yellow and orange highlights beneath a fluffy head of bright-white foam. The head retention is pretty good although the lacing could be better.

The Citra hops hit you right up-front in the nose with soft notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mango, and maybe even some papaya. It's fresh and summery with just enough juicy hop fruitiness that it's not raspy, resinous, or overwhelming.

The rest of the beer follows in the same way. There's just enough malt to keep it interesting while still staying on the lighter side (as it is a summer beer); and the hop flavor is just enough to liven it up. It's moderately bitter and it finishes mostly dry with just a touch of residual maltiness, some lingering floral character, and a spritz of citrusy hop flavor.

It's not a beer that's mean to be complex, but the hops are interesting; and overall it's easy to drink and quite refreshing. The label reads "satisfyingly sessionable" and that's certainly true!
