Had this on tap after a Belgian Fest at Ashley's in Westland Michigan. Excellent beer. Dangerously smooth at 10.5 ABV.

Dark brownish red with a small head that disappears quick. Smells of caramel and toffee. Tastes incredibly sweet, with some caramel, malt, and maybe a little scotch. Full mouthfeel with good carbonation. Overall it's decent, it's just wayyyy too sweet.

330 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy deep reddish/copper/light brown color with a small dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Just a bit too fruity in the aromas, but not overwhelming. Taste of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/woody/spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, apricot, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, light nuttiness/chocolate, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly drying from lingering bitterness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is a very nice Scotch ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering, and well made example of the style.

From notes taken 02/10/17:

Ruby but orange tinted. Seems dark and dull due to relative opacity as much as color. But that’s before the dregs are added, yielding something browner and swirlier (dear Lord, I apologize for the imagery that must inspire!). Crispy golden tan colored head of light but dense, rocky foam, decent retention. One larger patch of lace with a few extremities. Dark fruit, soil, must, caramel, toffee, alcohol aromas. Palate is equal parts dark fruit, toast, and spice, but sweetness seems to be almost entirely alcoholic. Phenolic like a Belgian (and it sort of is a Belgian, certainly made there). Compare to any number of standard Belgian Dark Ales. Still, it is toastier and earthier than those, in true Scotch Ale fashion. Spirit-like finish. Mentholated and peppery retro-olfaction just drives the Belgian-ness home. Medium- to full-bodied but just effervescent enough to significantly cut viscosity. Very warm, semi-astringent. A good one to drink for the alcohol, or if you prefer a little Belgian influence. Me, while I did enjoy this, I prefer something closer to the standard if it is well-made, but just barely.

Dark muddy brown color with early zero bubbles. Not pretty. Smells of leather, brown earth and tannins and dates. The yeast brings, again, a muddy feeling. Lots of earthy fruity yeast that finishes rich and meaty with mushrooms. Nice and rich, but just a bit gamey, boozy and cloying. Leaves a long sweet greasy mouth coating.

Dark fruits, coca cola, caramel, lightly yeasty. Fairly sweet but not overly so.

Very easy to drink, medium bodied, the abv is almost completely hidden.

I really enjoyed this a different take on a scotch ale.

Pours a dark red-brown colour with a small head and medium carbonation. Smells like an IPA with scotch in it.
The taste is sweet, initially dominated by the scotch aroma, leaving you in the end with a bitter taste of dried fruits and herbs.
Very pleasant and enjoyable.

A: Minimal head, deep ruby/brown verging on black
S: mainly sweetness (a very sticky sweetness) comes through, not much else very subtle nose, some earthiness as well, i've never smelled peat moss to my knowledge but this is what i imagine the scent is reminiscent of
T: boozy, pleasant, strong (very strong) malt presence, decidedly belgian but different enough to be intriguing, sweet but dirty and earthy (if that makes sense)
M: not dry but not overly sticky
O: a truly pleasant beer, I didn't know what to expect and if this beer had not been recommended i would have passed over it like I usually do. Something different, earthy but rich, a portrait of cold and harsh lands from the comfort of a pleasant beer, would recommend. Atypical for a belgian beer, I love typical belgians but also i mean that in a good way, TASTES LIKE PLAID
