Dark muddy brown color with early zero bubbles. Not pretty. Smells of leather, brown earth and tannins and dates. The yeast brings, again, a muddy feeling. Lots of earthy fruity yeast that finishes rich and meaty with mushrooms. Nice and rich, but just a bit gamey, boozy and cloying. Leaves a long sweet greasy mouth coating.

Dark fruits, coca cola, caramel, lightly yeasty. Fairly sweet but not overly so.

Very easy to drink, medium bodied, the abv is almost completely hidden.

I really enjoyed this a different take on a scotch ale.

Pours a dark red-brown colour with a small head and medium carbonation. Smells like an IPA with scotch in it.
The taste is sweet, initially dominated by the scotch aroma, leaving you in the end with a bitter taste of dried fruits and herbs.
Very pleasant and enjoyable.

A: Minimal head, deep ruby/brown verging on black
S: mainly sweetness (a very sticky sweetness) comes through, not much else very subtle nose, some earthiness as well, i've never smelled peat moss to my knowledge but this is what i imagine the scent is reminiscent of
T: boozy, pleasant, strong (very strong) malt presence, decidedly belgian but different enough to be intriguing, sweet but dirty and earthy (if that makes sense)
M: not dry but not overly sticky
O: a truly pleasant beer, I didn't know what to expect and if this beer had not been recommended i would have passed over it like I usually do. Something different, earthy but rich, a portrait of cold and harsh lands from the comfort of a pleasant beer, would recommend. Atypical for a belgian beer, I love typical belgians but also i mean that in a good way, TASTES LIKE PLAID

Scotch De Silly
Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy - 8% - 330ml Bottle – Best Before 17.12.2016

From BelgianBeerTourism.com:
Scotch de Silly is a beer with a powerful echo of World War I, tracing its origin to the turmoil of that conflict. At that time, outside of the city of Silly, a regiment of Scottish soldiers were stationed. When they requested a Scotch Ale from the brewery, the brewers couldn't come up with the beer, because they hadn't mastered that beer style – and neither could they access the sugars necessary to brew it.
Worse, during the war, many breweries were dismantled and raw materials (hops, malts, sugar) were scarce. But adversity breeds initiative, and the unit commander managed to order some hops from Kent in England. The result was a Belgian Scotch, a truly international collaboration, born from a time of war.
Scotch de Silly was initially developed with the help of a Scottish soldier, Jack Peyne. After the war he married and settled in Silly. He continued working at the brewery for many years. That recipe created at the end of the First World War still stands to this day, and Kent Golding hops are still used.

Appearance: Deep red colour, one finger tan coloured head that dissipates quickly, leaving nothing. No lacing on glass whatsoever.. Beer is clear when held to light.

Aroma: Burnt toffee, caramel, dark candy sugar, smells very sweet and exactly how a scotch ale should be.

Taste: Sweet malt, loads of dark sugars, a little too sweet for my taste. Licquorice and caramel in the middle. Quite a short finish, but very nice nonetheless. The alcohol is very well hidden.

Mouthfeel: Quite low in carbonation, but it's ok here. Medium bodied as one and very smooth.

Overall: I am really enjoying scotch ales at the moment and this one is good but I would like to have experienced a bit more in three areas – body, carbonation and finish there are much better out there. 7 overall.

Now the second time I've had this, I have to say that it is a challenge to like.
The primary challenge is the clash of cultures.
Belgian's distinctively brew with yeast and sugar.
Brits/Scots emphasize blending their malts.
And then this one has a funny aftertaste that I can't decide if it comes from using too much hops that linger or the clash of cultures.
I recommend this for the experience... and one you are better off to share to get another opinion.

I find it interesting that Belgian brewers are brewing to the American market with hoppier offerings. I find this ale even more interesting that this ale goes for the considerably smaller market of Scots. It turns out that a Scottish regiment was stationed in Silly and asked for a beer like they drank. And this is the one they liked.

This ale is listed is the "1001" list and... it is worth an argue that this experiment deserves to be on that list based on taste. But for historical value, it is a 1001.
