Poured into a nonic glass. A lovely dark copper-ruby hue, transparent. A generous bubbly inch-high head, tons of lacing. Excellent retention, which surprises me for a British ale such as this.
Nose is tea, malts, honey, perhaps a bit of berry.
Nice and malty, with notes of toffee, caramel, herbal hops, tea, dark fruit and honey. Alcohol is certainly present in the finish, it's actually quite noticeable, but it tastes alright. Decent combination of flavors.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with light, crisp carbonation. Alcohol is delivered sharply.
Not a bad little strong ale, very drinkable. The alcohol isn't masked perfectly, but the corresponding flavors certainly get the job done. A bit strong for a session, but it works as a good finish to a long day.

Format: a funky 500mL brown bottle with a super-stylish old-school English label. Looks great.
Appearance: pours a deep amber-brown with limited carbonation visible. A reasonable off-white head pops up to a finger before dropping to a thick cap. Looks good.
Aroma: plenty of caramel and toffee, roasted malts, dark fruits and some hops. Lovely.
Taste: orchard and heavy fruits - apple and pear, raisins and plums. Also those caramel and toffee, with some spices. Fantastic!
Aftertaste: all the flavours linger nicely for quite a time - this is one hell of a beer.
Mouth feel: a moderate body with also moderate carbonation. This beer is very drinkable - which is a bit dangerous at 7.2% ABV.
Overall: this is by far one of my favourite English beers - it ticks all the right boxes. Nicely complex, great feel, great package, great aroma, easy drinking and can be a slow-sipper if you want. A decent price too for a top-end Brit, at AU$8. definitely worth the having.

This has changed from smaller bottles at 7.2% to 500ml bottles at 6.7%.
Copper colour with no head. Theree seems to be dried fruit, apple, lemon and sherbet in the nose. This is certainly on the citric side for an English Strong Ale, but there is a pleasant variety of discernible flavours aside from lemon, including vanilla, oak, brown sugar and a little mint. Good stuff.
